Big 12 Conference Realignment

Tremendous read. Well worth signing up.

This article confirms that Arizona was on the cusp of staying in the PAC prior to Oregon/Washington announcing their Big Ten departure.

Yormark was mentally getting ready to move on to Uconn as #14. What a crazy a few hours those were.

Lots more details about the whole ordeal here:

Sounds like AAC is going to vote no in changing the playoff format for the next two years to 5 autobid, 7 at large

However there was some speculation that he is posturing, and would agree to a 5/7 model if they extended the playoff format past ‘24 and ‘25. Which, if they did, would be very good for the B12.

We really are fortunate the Pac 12 waited until this fall to have maybe their best season ever. 4 teams in Top 10. And 3 more teams (OSU, WSU and Colorado) who are now ranked or have been ranked and are enjoying the most success they've had in years.

Iowa State has an opportunity next season to get off to a good start in the new Big 12. I guess Utah and Colorado will be the favorites.

Chip Kelly's idea is my new favorite model.

64 P5 teams: 1 division. Everyone is independent. 1 championship
64 G5 teams: 1 division. Everyone is independent. 1 championship

Who would you schedule if you were Iowa State AD?

I'll take a shot at this:
Week 1- FCS
Week 2- Iowa
Week 3- G5
Weeks 4-12- Kansas, K-State, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

But every year I'd replace a few of those teams above to play a game in Texas, Florida, and Ohio or Cali
In my opinion, the bulk of our schedule should be close to home. Sprinkle in a few long road trips to boost our recruiting presence in those areas.

I'll take it a step further. Regular season ends the week before Thanksgiving. 24 team playoff begins Thanksgiving weekend. Top 8 seeds get a bye. 2 games on Thu, 3 Fri, 3 Saturday.
Dec 2nd: Round of 16
Dec 9th: Round of 8
Dec 16: Final Four
NYD: National Championship

Clemson and Florida State were targeted to join the Big 12 (18) that have won National Championships in football. Their additions would really put us in play as a power conference in Football.

Makes sense. It would just be for football. Conferences would still exist for the so-called Olympic sports.

So cross-divisional games are still in play if it's split into P5 & G5 leagues? I thought maybe it'd be totally separate unless I misunderstood Kelly's concept. (He didn't really elaborate other than to say the two hold separate championshps).

I'll give my opinion, I don't know what his thoughts were.

I say, first of all, it probably doesn't matter how many teams are in P5 or G5? It could be 100/50 or whatever.
But, as far as I would have it, schedule whoever you want. If you want to schedule Drake, go ahead.

So the SEC can continue to schedule lighter than everyone else and get away with it?

Pass.

I think the playoff should have as a requirement that to be eligible for an at large bid, you must have a top 30 strength of schedule to be considered. It would eliminate a bunch of the scheduling patsies for a good record that we've seen from SEC teams in particular, and G5 weakness when it comes to making their case to be included.

Utah will likely always be the favorites, IMO. At least as long as Wittingham is there. Dude is a great coach, has a great setup and program. They were good under Meyer but he's really sustained it, developed it and they are IMO the Pac 12's best.

Not Flashiest. Bet best - this year they're struggling a tad especially without their QB and who knows on his health - but that defense is legit and they're fun to watch. They remind me of what I think Iowa State can be / could be or or Fiesta Bowl team.

I think the other favorites will change with the seasons but as long as Wittingham's there, I don't see Utah not being considered favorites.

I think Colorado is exactly the type of team the 3-3-5 is designed to stop. If Oline development can move this team forward i like our chances to compete against the new additions.

I can't imagine if it was a 64 team division that there would be 12 games. Maybe 10 instead and then FCS games wouldn't count anymore.

A 64 team division, not a 64 team playoff.

Keep a 16 team playoff, so maximum of 4 additional games. Remove the CCG’s and I don’t see any issues with a 12 game schedule. Most teams would already play less games with the bowls going away.
