Moving into our first home next week and trying to find the best home security system that is pretty idiot proof. I like Ring. Better half is trying for something cheaper called Abode. Suggestions?

A good deadbolt lock and a baseball bat. I have a bat under my bed and if anyone enters my home unannounced they better hope they see me coming because I will not stop swinging until they are no longer a threat.

I probably will eventually install some kind of camera system but have not had a need to so far. Maybe have too much faith that I live in a decent neighborhood I don't need to obsess on what is happening?

A second to a dog. They'll hear anything going on faster than a security system for anyone entering the house. And they'll take care of it too. I've yet to see a security system that'll scare someone out of the house.

While guns n dogs is a clever response, if you’re like me you can take my tv, couch and computer. Please don’t touch my dogs. Because dogs make a bunch of noise, they’re vulnerable to great harm just to keep them quiet.
Guns on the other hand are one of the things criminals look for first. If they find them, they take them and use them, all registered in your name.
ADT is the number one name in home security against break-ins, for fire and co2 protection, and it isn’t even close. If you’ve got the blue stop sign outside your house, bad guys keep driving and the fire dept is first to your house in the event of fire or co2 detection. If you want peace of mind, go with ADT.

That's a great defense if they're armed with baseballs.

We had ADT and, when we moved, had two options when disconnecting:

1. Get the new owner to sign on
2. Pay a portion of the remaining contract. No ifs, ands, or buts on that part. We ended up paying $900 just to shut off the service.

Now we have Ring. Since we don't have dogs (we're both allergic), we have the Ring motion alert tone set to dogs barking.

You could always put a fence around your place and get a lama and peacocks. ;) The peacocks will make a heckuva racket when someone comes on the property. Lamas can be mean and will chase anyone else out.

And pay out the ass for monthly service and a contract that sucks.

Actually I save 20% on our homeowners insurance, an amount the covers nearly 100% of monthly monitoring thru ADT. After a year of on time payments these folks DECREASED THE MONTHLY by $10/month. Your cable friends increase your subscription after you sign on. These folks decrease them. We end up paying almost nothing after putting on a points based credit card for 24/7/365 professional monitoring.
Stay safe everybody!!

We also received a discount on our homeowners insurance when we had ADT. I'm not sure if it was offered just with ADT or with any home security system similar. We set up automatic payments, so I think we had a small discount there as well for that.

As for monitoring, we lived in a rural area at the time. In six years, the alarm system went off twice during the night, both times due to batteries that went bad. The sheriff's department would call to make sure everything was ok if we didn't get the system shut off right away. One of the deputies told me when he gets a call from dispatch about a home alarm, most are due to the battery failing so he would wait until dispatch contacted the homeowners before he started driving that direction.

I had a moat with sharks with lasers attached to their frickin heads.. Got a little spendy, so now I just have ill-tempered Sea Bass.
