Best Des Moines Restaurants?

B@B is the best of the best. Hungry Hobo is great as well. Hobo has some nice side dishes like cheesy potato..

I don't understand the love for B&B. I've had their tenderloin, which IMO was average by Iowa standards. I also don't like the looks of their meats -- to me they appeared very brown, i.e. not fresh. Gives me a gag reflex just thinking about it.

For pizza go up to Ames to Great Plains Sauce and Dough. One slice puts you over your recommended daily calorie intake. It's incredible.

I think what we really need is separate polls for each category (Best...) and we can choose from top 15 for each category or list an "other".

Somebody with too much time on their hands should make it happen.

I'll agree with those who suggested Johnny's Italian Steakhouse for a nice steak or any nice dinner out for that matter. It used to be our favorite place to go when we lived in DSM a few years back. They start you off with awesome bread and salad and then the entrees are huge and always delicious.

Oh and don't forget the famous iron skillet potatoes on the side.......very delicious and also awesome warmed up for breakfast the next day.

Never eaten there but ... They have the stupidest radio commercials ever.

haven't been back since the waitress dumped my soda in my lap.
They're really big glasses.

Cozy Cucina- is my favorite, and has been for some time.
Flying Mango- artsy BBQ, which in theory, is probably a bad idea.
Fongs- drinks with 9 varieties of mind suck make their pizza really good.
Sbrocco- it's like you left the midwest, even for just an hour.
El Charro- best Chili Relleno's and Pork Shoulder (Carnita's) anywhere

Funny that I left off Flying Mango and it is my Number 1 favorite place in Des Moines. I guess it just doesn't fit in any category.

Are there any good sub/sandwich shops on the west side? Of the locally owned variety, not a Subway or Jimmy Johns.
A fantastic Ma & PA sub shop just opened in my hometown and it got me wondering if there is anything that good on the west side of DSM.
Its very inconvienent for me to regularly travel to the east side.

Sorry...but that is your curse for settling for suburbia. Which is fine. However, if you're going to choose to live in the land of beige houses, strip malls, and chain restaurants, you can't expect to enjoy the variety found in a city. I liken' this to the single guy who leaves college and buys (or rents) a townhome in Ankeny and then ******* about the lack of night life.

I like Great Plains, but to except that a metro of 500+ doesn't have a decent pizza place (and thus you have to drive 40 minutes to Great Plains in Ames) is beyond reasonable. The guy is moving to Des Moines, not AMES. There are plenty of pizza options available here.

I get 90% of my meat at B@B and your crazy if you think it is brown. It's the freshest you can get. They are cutting it off the cow as you order it. You must have had a bad day there. Also the have pepper cheese balls.

I live right off of 86th st in the "heart" of the Clive bar district. That hardly feels like "suburbia".
But, I can understand your overall point.

that would make sense if the majority of restaurants suggested in this thread weren't in suburbia/outside of downtown..

Me and the family are making the move to the Des Moines area and don't know a lot about what it has to offer. Have checked out obvious websites and reviews but thought I'd see what people here think. When it comes to restaurants in and around Des Moines, what would you say:

Best Steakhouse?

Best Seafood?

Best Italian?

Best Pizza?

Best Asian/Sushi?

Best Indian?

Best Sandwich?

Best Breakfast?

Best place for kids?

Best upscale place for an evening out without kids?

Most interesting place/menu?

Any opinions, whether on all of the above or just a few, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can take care of all of this in one stop at Quik Trip.

Best Steakhouse? Not quite Des Moines but a short drive. The Grinnell Steakhouse

Best Italian? The Latin King or Gino's

Best Pizza? Chuck's

Best Asian/Sushi? I am allergic to sushi

Best Indian?

Best Sandwich? Famous Daves

Best Breakfast? I wish the Knox Cafe was still around

Best place for kids?

Best upscale place for an evening out without kids?

Most interesting place/menu?
