Pizza in DSM is terrible. I would say Scornovaccas is the best i've had here. You are better off getting Caseys pizza though when you compare it to most DSM pizza places.

Have you been to Chucks?

Scorno's is inconsistent
as far as deep dish I honestly like Ole Chicago over F&Os.
Hilltop, Barattas and Pagliais are all good thin crust options in DSM.

Cyforce hit the nail on the head on Italian - the chicken spiedini at Latin King. It's maybe my favorite food on earth.

I usually make an effort to eat the ribs at Woody's Smoke Shack whenever I'm in Des Moines. The best consistently-good ribs I've ever had, and the rest of the menu is quite tasty as well.

BTW-My worst dining experience in Des Moines, which is very very rare, was at Texas Roadhouse. I live just a few miles from there and was always wondering why it's so busy so I decided to check it out.

In the hour that I was there the "crew" sang happy birthday twice.

The food was average at best.

It still gets a lot of business but I don't have a clue why.

Are there any good sub/sandwich shops on the west side? Of the locally owned variety, not a Subway or Jimmy Johns.
A fantastic Ma & PA sub shop just opened in my hometown and it got me wondering if there is anything that good on the west side of DSM.
Its very inconvienent for me to regularly travel to the east side.

agree 100%. for a "steakhouse", their steaks are some of the worst i've ever had. went the 1st time to try and thought it was aweful. went the 2nd time cuz i had a giftcard to use and thought the meat was a little slimy. went a 3rd time for the wifes work xmas party, ordered a sirloin, and it was the best steak i had in 3 tries, but it still wasn't that good. i just don't get why it's so busy all the time.

Anybody ever tried Paradise Pizza in WDM where they dump all the ingrediants in to your pizza?

Another kind of hidden gem that more people need to try is El Chisme which just moved to Valley Junction. Amazing food!

El Chisme is great, we used go to there all the time for lunch when it was on merle hay. I love the steak torta.

Thanks all for the great info. Very helpful.

And hats off to Ankeny for the great Long John Silver's. Can't have been easy to keep that dream alive.
