Baylor Athletics

I have no idea how much he makes but the Baylor Athletics Director deserves a raise. Talk about doing a lot with very little $ wise. I realize they have strong local talent pool to select from but their meteoric raise (in all major sports) the past few seasons is incredible.

when we joined the Big 12 in 1995, our budget was 7.5 million.

last figure I saw was 59 million (with break even revenue), good for 4th in the league (tied with Mizz I believe).

it's not the same old Baylor.

I have mixed feelings regarding Baylor athletics.

The football teams success is most impressive and probably equally deserved. Not necessarily for their fans but for the players and coaches. Briles seems to be a good coach who has immediately improved the Baylor football team and RG3 is probably one of the classiest athletes I have ever seen that is that talented. I found myself cheering for them every game after ISU played them.

The men's basketball team I don't quite feel the same because of the suspicions surrounding their coach. I don't have any ill feelings toward their players and am willing to reserve my judgment until something comes out about Drew, other staff members, or their players.

The women's team is probably the biggest issue and if I actually was a WBB fan I would be completely outraged. Britney Griner (male or female) is a thug. I believe Baylor fans defending her are either completely ignorant or have a short memory and forgot about how she assaulted a fellow player on the court. Personally I can't figure out why she didn't face charges. It was completely classless and if would have happened anywhere off the court she would have gone to jail. The only thing that may have been worse, was the poor excuse for "punishment" as she only sat 2 games.

Watch this and tell me you wouldn't want to punch someone, too:

That wasn't just physical post play from Tech. That girl wasn't even trying to play basketball with that ********.

Too bad they will always be known for having a coach to get one of his players to off another player while making him out to be a drug dealer.

this post is better off ignored, but it's a perfect example of libel. if only I gave a ***** about the rep of Bliss... lol

but I mean, wow, educate yourself on what actually happened before you go spouting off lies, maybe?

The reason nothing ever came of "The Punch" was because if there was an investigation into what went down that day in Lubbock, it would look awful for Jordan Barncastle (the girl on the receiving end of the punch), Kristy Curry (Tech's head coach), the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, and the fanbase in general. Griner already looks bad in light of it, but if anyone looked a little deeper (i.e., Tech police, Tech administration), they would have found some pretty ugly things on their end as well.

There were some truly abhorrent things said to Griner's face that day, repeated by the players on the bench, and hurled at her from the stands. Not to mention the fact that Tech's players were mugging her on virtually every possession, and that Barncastle had elbowed her in the ribs the possession immediately preceding the punch. Barncastle then tried to hip-toss Griner and got socked in the face for it. The hip-toss alone was not deserving of a broken nose, but it was a culmination of the entire day's events.

I am by no means justifying Griner's actions. It was the poorest display of character she has ever exhibited. She herself wishes she had never done it and has gone above and beyond to keep her cool in incidents since that time. The incident in question certainly was not unprovoked. There is a reason the Big 12 only chose to suspend her 1 game. Mulkey added one more on top, hence why she sat two.

Additionally, all of that said, I think we can all agree that sometimes some people deserve to be punched in the face.

Please, Griner gets away with more than just about anyone.

Not like what Tech was doing in that game. She's allowed to be physical, but she's not elbowing people in the ribs, or trying to openly throw people to the floor.

Labeling her as a thug because of ONE incident, where she was clearly provoked, is not fair to her at all.

it was also 3 years ago when she was an 18 year old freshman...

anyone here have anything the wish they could take back from when they were 18????

I got some stuff...it just wasn't on TV and endless played on YouTube.

Don't take on 5 second mistake in the heat of battle and make a judgement about a persons life from it...Hakeem Olajuwon had a few of these incidents in college and is generally loved by basketball fans.

It's been 3 years and nothing since then...she has matured greatly since getting to Baylor....and yes, Barnyard deserved it...but you still can't do it...

Sorry but gonna strongly disagree. If you actually investigate all of what you are accusing (except for the hip toss as that can be seen for itself) Tech of that day, then I would say none of those things warrant a punch and none of those should excuse proper punishment on Griner. Maybe the Big 12 conference and NCAA is to blame for not doing more, but Coach Mulkey had the opportunity to show some class and suspend her star player for the remaining season or moreso and did not.

The problem with this is that is sends a pretty clear message that if you are an athlete you are above the law. Plain and simple. Don't get me wrong the Tech girl deserved a Flagrant 1 and was not completely innocent, but 2 games for intentionally breaking a girl's nose??? Are you kidding me??? If Roger Goddell were in charge here, Griner may never have seen the court again. Griner = thug.

I take it that you've never been in a fistfight before, huh?

If Goodell were in charge, she might not have been suspended period. Remember the Andre Johnson vs. Cortland Finnegan dustup? Neither of them were even ejected, much less suspended.

Sorry, I guess felon is the proper term. Griner = felon.

here is a very detailed article I found about Baylor's athletic finances. not exactly small-time anymore:

How Much Does it Cost to Become College Sports's Biggest Program? - Jordan Weissmann - Business - The Atlantic

sorry, I shouldn't be posting here, but the combination of misinformation and vitriol on this board is hard to stomach.

Doesn't refute the point that the fans are spoiled, and for all the success, they're still lacking fan support. That is the main beef Iowa State fans have with Baylor, IMO.

Baylor should count its lucky stars they had to forge their way into the Big XII out of the dismembered SWC, or else you'd be another SMU, North Texas type of school.

A fistfight, IMO, usually involves more than one punch.

Not if you do it right.

I think you lack a basic understanding of how our legal system works. If she had been charged with assault (would have been a HUGE stretch, IMO), it certainly would not have been felony assault. And she certainly would not have been convicted and sentenced to any jail time. Tech didn't want any digging into what preceded the punch, so they let the issue die. It would probably be best if we did the same to this discussion.

Well, to be fair, it was down to Baylor and TCU. If TCU had gotten the nod, it doesn't seem crazy to think that Baylor could be back in, like TCU is now.

Although given their fan support when they were a successful BCS level program, I would have to think that they would have really fallen off as a member of a non-AQ league. Being located right in DFW definitely helped TCU build a program despite fan support that makes Baylor look great until recently.

Exactly how are BU fans spoiled? Their fans ponied up the money to get their budget near $60,000,000.

Or maybe a TCU type, with a BCS appearance.
