Basketball Pet Peeves

the makeup call. It happens nearly every game. Bad call on one end ends up with a makeup call on the other. Its not fair and often times makes a player end up in foul trouble when he didnt deserve it. I even get mad when they do this in favor of isu.

I didn't want to sully one of the Morris shoulder threads with this, but how he got injured is one of my pet peeves. When an offensive players ball fakes then jumps into a defensive player who is already in the air and can't do a damn thing about it, why is that a foul on the defensive guy? My other pet peeve is flopping. Both seem like weak plays. Maybe I'm just used to playground ball where that crap doesn't fly.

*end rant*

Agree with these. Would like to add a 3rd. Freethrow jinxs

The latest one is teams fouling with a 3 point lead and under 10 seconds left so the opposing team can't get a chance for a game tying three. I believe it is the smart thing to do, but dang does it ruin the end of some very exciting games.

Letting the ball go out of bounds when you can easily grab it. Also, rolling the ball up the court in an attempt to save time (hint: by the time you bend over to pick it up and get up to full speed, you haven't saved any time compared to if you just do a normal inbounds pass to a player on the run).
However you then have to play 4 on 5. That play isn't about getting the ball down the floor any quicker, it is really about getting your inbounder down the floor before the clock starts.

Dribblers who constantly carry or palm the ball. This gets called occasionally but not nearly enough. Bugs me because it gives the offensive player a big advantage. Almost every point guard does this, even Monte.

I like replay but sometimes it really sucks. I can't remember what game it was but back before replay I feel a lot of the times if there was some contact on a drive and the ball went out of bounds, refs would just give it back to the offensive player it was 50/50 as they knew there was likely a foul but didn't call it. Now if they don't call the foul, replay gives the ball to defender

It seems like Javan Felix carries the ball horribly with every dribble.

Ball handler picking up his dribble for no reason, and offensive rebounds.

The ball moving very well around the permitter/court for nice high percentage shots, and then one person starts dribbling with no plan.

And offensive rebounds.

Mine is when a player drives baseline....defender clearly riding his arse like Secretariat the whole way and they call him out of bounds.

Its like jfc do you really think the kid just ran out of bounds?

can someone explain what exactly the rules are for being able to jump as a defender on layups? I get that the arms have to still be straight up and down but Ive seen numerous times the defender isnt established actually kind of jumps into the offensive player and stops their forward progress after they have jumped, yet no call at all. Its still a body foul on the defender correct?

. Rewarding touch fouls to the team that is behind because they are behind.

That touch-foul thing drives me nuts. I harp on it frequently. When teams are in an obvious “must-foulâ€￾ situation late they quick-whistle fouls that probably would not be called during normal course of game. So teams hoping to make comeback typically don’t make serious attempt at a steal, which would (1) be more competitive (2) probably more likely to gain a possession instead of depending on missed foul shots.

The bog-down of late free throws is one of the biggest problems with the sport (mentioned already in this thread), and the ticky-tack “automatic foulâ€￾ contributes to it. Also, teams ought to get option to shoot FTs or inbound the ball at some point in the game -- maybe after double-bonus begins. Team that’s behind still has a shot to rally, y’know, by attempting to steal the inbound pass, for example.

Several mentions of replay, I agree the length of delay is annoying. I've hated the lag everywhere it's used (NFL has gotten better at reducing the time-lapse compared to early days of review), but it may bother me the most in basketball. Since it's used late in games, it further drags the action. I like having it available to make an accurate call, but if there isn’t obvious evidence with one or two looks, you can’t overturn it.

This guy.....

If you jump in the air as a defender on a pump fake on a jump shot, you kind of deserve to have a foul called on you as long as it's not a blatantly bad attempt by the shooter to draw the foul.

Biggest pet peeve is a player going nuts for an "And 1" then missing the free throw
