Barnes to announce on ESPNU

Cyclone State, do you overreact to everything???

Look, we play in the Big 12. It's a league that the top high school players in country see as a destination conference where they can showcase their skills for the next level.

The first three years of the Greg McDermott era at Iowa State have not been successful. I am a fan of the coach, but to say otherwise is lying.

It's obvious that Harison Barnes is different than anyone else ever to play in Iowa, everyone knows that.

I didn't say not signing him was the end of the world, but if you think that the inability of this coaching staff to convince Harrison Barnes to sign here won't be used against us, then you are not thinking logically.

Back to the original point, KU, UT, KSU, OSU, OU, A & M, and Baylor, have all shown that they can recruit consistently. One Craig Brackins, while great, you see how much success we have had with him, is a nice START. Remember that was the FIRST player that Greg got to commit. The next top 100 high school guy we signed was Colvin. Think of how many players came in between.

It got bad enough that, in spite of telling everyone he wasn't into quick fixes, he signed TWO juco's. He KNOWS this is the year that he has to win. Next year is a long ways away, but losing your two top players doesn't bode well as the conference continues to reload.

You act as if the fan "attitude" is a problem, it's not. Fans are just being quite realistic about expectations while other fans that have had an ax to grind with Greg since day 1 - are looking for reasons to put this on him.

If I was as arrogant as you to put motives on posters, (as opposed to just reading the content of their posts, then agreeing or disagreeing) I also might then say that GMac's supporters have a reason to argue why HB won't sign. You know, just to lower expections perhaps?

On the contrary, I don't think I referred to the "impact" of fans at all in my post. Maybe you should re-read it.
I dealt with how some ISU fans apparently view their own program, and and thus their prediction of how HB must perceive it also.
And also, they want to "warn" the rest of us...

I've been as hard as anybody on McD but if you view our program on the same level as Duke, UNC, UCLA, et. all, that's your problem and not mine. I'm basing my thoughts on the matter not only on how I perceive our program to currently sit compared to Duke's but also of what people who know more than I do about the situation have said.

I believe so. It's not going to happen overnight. That said, this is the year for it to happen, as far as wins go.

I agree that there is a chasm within the fanbase over Greg McDermott. But, I think that he has used up a lot of the good will that has been bestowed upon him because he is not his predecessor (rightly or wrongly) with the performance on the court.

I know that everyone wants him to win. I think that the problem is that he loaded up to win this year, and we are looking at taking a huge step backwards next year. When you have been at a place for going on your fourth year, the program should be on a lot better foundation than this one is. That is my concern, and I am perfectly willing to be wrong on that.

I know that the people will bring up the fact that LE is the only coach to have a winning conference record. But, there is a decent basketball tradition here at Iowa State over the last 25 years, at least enough of one to think that it isn't impossible to win consistently here.

That's why I want to see how he coaches this team, and what that leads to the future. I saw 50 plus games that he coached at UNI. He had great success, but he lost games the same way that he lost the Hawaii game last year, by playing not to lose. I hope that with a more athletic team, he will refrain from micromanaging the game, and let the kids play.

That is as big as anything for the future of recruiting.

This.

Go through the Top 50 recruits and see which schools they are attending. There aren't many "Iowa State" type schools in there. Here is a sample of the 2009 class starting at #1:

Kentucky
Kentucky
Georgia Tech
Texas
North Carolina
Texas
Florida State
Kansas
Oklahoma
Villanova
Cincinnati
Florida
Washington
Pittsburgh

This isn't a McDermott problem. This is a Big Guy vs. Little Guy problem. Its not just Mac that can't get recruits away from Kentucky/Duke/UNC/KU/Texas/etc...its EVERYONE'S problem.

Call it what you want. You are quicker than an 18 year old boy in his first special moment to go off on Greg. This much is fact.

The content of your posts? You've only listed part of the HB story, the part that is why he should come to ISU, ignoring all the reasons programs like Duke are simply better. So, it's hard to pay much attention to your content when it's not painting the full picture.

This mindset is exactly what I'm talking about. In the Tim Floyd days (or the early days of LE), you wouldn't have talked like this.
What exactly is an "Iowa State" type school?

In the Tim Floyd days and the Larry Eustachy days we didn't have a chance at the #1 recruit in the country. We got one McD's AA b/c his family knew our coaches mother in law, but that's it.

One big thing that I think we forget is that maybe, just maybe Harrison sees some value in getting away from home in the year or two before he moves on to the NBA. I grew up near Waterloo, and I sure didn't want to go to UNI because I wanted to be a little further away from home.

For starters... one that doesn't have multiple national championship banners in the rafters, or 1,2 or 3 McDonald's All-Americans in seemingly every recruiting class.

I love ISU basketball. My life used to be planned around games. I was beyond giddy when we landed and ACTUAL McD's All-American in Fizer. Hadn't happened before. Not like this is a usual occurrence at ISU.

And despite my passion, even I realize there's a chasm between us and the "elites" in repuatation, achievement, tradition.

To say we can go head-to-head for recruites and "expect" to win.... to not realize that we are in a category of schools exlusive to Duke, UNC, KU, etc... That's like saying ISU is on par with Florida, USC, and historically Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama .. in football. Wish and expect all you want. It just isn't so.

There's nothing wrong with realizing your place in the world and aspiring to better things.

I expect him to mention two schools at the presser. He's going to spend a prolonged period of time talking about Iowa State, the people, the school, the coaching staff, the players and help us get a bunch of positive national TV pub. Say nothing but good things.

Then put on a Duke hat saying there's only one school that he'd rather attend.

my head would have to say something along that line too, but however, my head has felt different on a lot of things that have happened to Iowa State athletics this year. I can only hope I am wrong and Barnes picks staying close to mom.

It's not about your mindset, its about facts. The fact is that like it or not, we are not an elite basketball school. I think most rational fans realize this.

As for what an "Iowa State" type school is...its a school that has had some success but it cannot/hasn't been sustained success like the elite schools. Its a school that can grab a Top 50 recruit here and there but cannot consistantly get these types of players. Its a school that the #1 recruit in the nation doesn't typically consider.
