Barnes to announce on ESPNU

I fully expect McDermott to sign a kid who's grown up less than a mile from campus, has attended Cyclone games virtually all his life, and has coaches, teachers, neighbors, and friends who are almost all Cyclone fans and look forward to cheering him on.
I fully expect it.

I fully expect you to be greatly disappointed.

I firmly believe he will whip out a Duke hat, throw it on the ground, and take a dump on it. Then say Go Cyclones! as he rips off his overshirt displaying a cyclone jersey underneath. Write it down that you heard it here first.

That is so unbelieveably stupid and callous. HB is a young man of class, character and respect.....

He'll whiz on the hat, doing so from behind the podium so as to shield himself and be "discrete".

I agree with this. Every coach in America would have killed for the in that Greg had with this kid.

At the same time, though, I understand that Coach K, Roy Williams, and Bill Self are rock stars in their profession. A kid who watches basketball on TV sees them, along with Calipari, more than anyone else.

The funny thing is that at one point AJ Derby was rated ahead of Harrison Barnes as a basketball prospect. A lot of his development as a player can be directly tied working out with the team. I can see that they benefit from it, now. But in the beginning Barnes got a lot from the team.

I look at it like this, if we can't sign a kid that grew up in Ames, and is friends with the coach's son, and plays with the players on the team, then what top kid will ever take this staff seriously when it comes down to signing on the dotted line.

I hope that I am wrong, and that he is a Cyclone next week. The problem is, there is still a perception out there going back to Wesley Johnson. I know that people on here know how all that went down, but it still doesn't change the fact that Greg put his arm around WJ, and said that he was the face of the program.

Recruiting is a dirty business, and all these people that we are trying to get are looking at other schools as well. Losing Barnes would be another thing that every kid in the world will hear about us.

Anyway, let's hope that we some big games this season. Greg needs to get some scalps this year, and this is certainly the best chance that he will have to do so.

Go Clones!!!

Just plan on shutting down CF for 3 days after he announces.

When he picks Duke to we travel to all his HS games and boo the crap out of him? I kid I kid.

Convenient, eh - just listing part of the argument?

Good post, I agree with most of what you are saying. It would really put a question mark on the ability of McD to bring in top notch recruits to take this program to another level. However, all is not lost if Barnes chooses to go elsewhere. There seems like a need for another step...and hopefully that comes this season.

Because one guy decided to go elsewhere? It would negate signing of guys like Brackins, Colvin and Gilstrap?

No...it is not just because of one guy...and it is only one question mark. Again, I think there needs to be an intermediate step before people can start to get angry. This is not negating CB, Colvin, and Gilstrap...instead this is encouraging them to be the next step.

No, it would put a question mark on the ability of McDermott to bring in the #1 recruit in the nation.

if you didn't already have that question mark, I don't think there is any help for you.

I hear ya - I honestly do. It's just a huge step from these guys to a player like HB. Has Iowa State ever landed a recruit of that caliber? I agree that we should start expecting those things - but I think it's a bit early...especially for a program not known for bringing in top, top players.

Greg has not proven he can win yet and the jury is still out there - no question. I think this will be the year he proves he can win with talent. It's just going to be a year too late for HB.

Give me a break! You make it sound like HB is just another recruit who happens to be right in our own back yard. He's not only the highest rated recruit in the nation, but he's one of the highest rated recruits in many years! And somehow you think that it will be a horrible reflection on McDermott's program if he doesn't sign him. Amazing.

if he's at our practice facility 3 times a week, his mom works for ISU and wants him to come here, and he's grown up watching this program (which could hurt our chances.... freaking wayne morgan years.... (expletive) ), how does one visit to another school trump all these factors going ISU's way? He is probably a one and done anyway right? why not do that at ISU where he will stand out and probably shatter almost every offensive single season record?
bc he is not a 1and done guy he is only 6'7" and needs to bulk up if he is thinking NBA SF. i think he will play for 2-3 years. i could b wrong tho.

What I'm "disappointed" in is posts like yours and others that are proclaiming the rest of us to be "mentally prepared" for HB to turn down ISU, for why would he ever stay put with all these great schools after him?
You know, there is all the whining and complaining on this board of ISU's lack of respect nationally, or bad calls for years from refs, or lack of equal revenue sharing from the Big 12, etc., etc., etc.
Yet the biggest block of folks who "look down" on ISU seems to be an alarming section of our own fan base, who can't possibly see how the hometown boy would want to play here.
Check that, I'm not disappointed - I'm disgusted.

What impact does the fans assuming HB will go to Duke or another program have on his recruitment?

None.

I'm afraid it is going to be a year too late, I agree. Wasn't Gilstrap the #2 JUCO prospect in the nation? That is a start for sure, have to get in the support structure and then the consistent wins.

On the contrary, I don't think I referred to the "impact" of fans at all in my post. Maybe you should re-read it.
I dealt with how some ISU fans apparently view their own program, and and thus their prediction of how HB must perceive it also.
And also, they want to "warn" the rest of us...

I believe so. It's not going to happen overnight. That said, this is the year for it to happen, as far as wins go.

You act as if the fan "attitude" is a problem, it's not. Fans are just being quite realistic about expectations while other fans that have had an ax to grind with Greg since day 1 - are looking for reasons to put this on him.
