Barnes to announce on ESPNU

The sad thing is, he could work out most of the positions from point guard to maybe power forward. He is providing a high level of competition for our guys to work out with and hopefully it is paying off.

My first ever post on the HB situation but he possibly had an upfront understanding with the coaches that there was no promises of commitment if he practiced with the team and they were ok with that. If that is the case I see nothing wrong with using the facilities and not commiting.

I had that thought as well, and I agree, I don't see anything wrong with that if that's the case. Still, I would think his conscious would be telling him it's wrong to use the program like that, even if no one else saw it that way.

Unlimited unofficial visits...he comes and goes as he pleases.

I was speaking more to his use of the facilities and playing with the team, not just contact with the team.

Seems to me that such activities would constitute "benefits" to kids that aren't available to the general student, or in this case - high schooler.

Not like Gmac (or any coach, not limiting this to ISU) would allow some random ball player into the facility. Let's not kid ourselves. HB is getting this time, these "perks" because he's a prospect. Not because he's some "feel good" story or the local kid that ISU is trying to help out.

Not sure what his mind set is...He has done everything he said he would up until this point. Why would he change now?

He's at the practice facility 3 times a week...How much of an impact can an exhibition game make?

if he's at our practice facility 3 times a week, his mom works for ISU and wants him to come here, and he's grown up watching this program (which could hurt our chances.... freaking wayne morgan years.... (expletive) ), how does one visit to another school trump all these factors going ISU's way? He is probably a one and done anyway right? why not do that at ISU where he will stand out and probably shatter almost every offensive single season record?

Good point. One thing I would like to touch on, I don't know how he is supposed to get a college degree and be a one and done. He has always expressed his intention on getting a good degree in business.

With how often he uses our practice facilities, I will be pretty disappointed (not meltdown wise) if he doesn't pick ISU. Not that it's necessarily a sign that he's coming to ISU and I was expecting something that didn't happen, but because I'll feel like we were used big time.

The amount of time he spends with our team/coaches/facilities is a big part of the reason that I keep thinking that we have a shot. That feeling at the end about being used would be tough not to think. I'm not sure that's his character, since I don't know him, but it's easy to see how anyone could feel that way.

that's why i threw in the (?) after that, not knowing if his intentions are to bounce to the NBA as soon as possible. I think it's clear that he has the athletic ability to do so if he wishes, my fault for assuming.

That being said, why not stay four years at ISU then and break every single school record? honestly, we still call a guy "the mayor of ames" who played here nearly 20 years ago. at a school like duke, he would just be another good player to come through the door, although in Ames, IMO he would be appreciated much more.

I can see where you are coming from.

To everyone who thinks HB would have "used" us if he doesn't chose to come to Iowa State after practicing with our team over the past couple of years, that simply isn't the case.

HB practicing with us makes us better. HB being mentioned as a recruit and keeping us in his top 6 makes us better. HB spending that much time with our coaching staff makes us better. The number one recruit in the nation has given legitimacy to Iowa State by considering us.

God forbid the kid ever gets hurt or homesick going somewhere else, but he will always have a home at Iowa State if he chooses to go elsewhere. Why would our coaching staff ever burn that bridge? What choice do they have in this recruitment? Tell him unless you commit here you can't come to the practice facility anymore?

I hope HB comes here, if he doesn't, oh well, good luck where ever he ends up. If I was McD I would remind him if it doesn't work out where ever you go, the door is always open. At some point, HB might learn the grass isn't greener on the other side.

Either way, I'm glad it will be over soon.

I agree with your post, except if HB isn't happy somewhere he will be a lottery pick. He won't be transfering anywhere.

I don't have a problem with him using the PF. I understand the benifits for ISU. I think what some people will mutter under their breath is 'our PF (or facilities) is good enough for you all through high school that only makes you better but our program is not big league enough for you'...again, I don't mean to sound sour grapes and who knows maybe the kid still chooses ISU but I think it's just kinda sad a kid from Ames, Iowa isn't head over heals in love with the idea that an entire fanbase will party like 1999 if he commits. Basically he is telling us all we are not good enough...kinda sucks.

If he uses the PF after he commits elsewhere I will have a problem.

I think the issue of HB "using" ISU is waaaay overstated. Ames is such a small town, most young people who grow up in Ames "use" Iowa State facilities/ faculty/ seminars/special events, etc. all the time. With the exception of the just opened practice facility, can't you just walk in the door to most ISU buildings?

If you took the top 10% of the ames high graduating class (what is the class size these days...300?) I'd be shocked if more than 15 (50%) go on to ISU....

You'll have to forgive me for thinking HB will NOT have been more of a help to ISU than we were to him if he commits anywhere else.

If practicing with HS Soph and Jr's made you better all colleges would be doing it. That's not the case though...is it?

I don't want to insult the kids character...by all accounts he's a great guy...but if he goes to Duke or KU or whatever at this point he will take a major hit IMHO...to me a death blow. I understand that when he was working with ISU before he may have thought he would play here...and then he blew up into the #1 player in the US. That part may have changed...WE have not. WE are still the same guys that have welcomed him with open arms and helped him develop. Hopefully that still means something to him.

Not all colleges have the best 17 year old in the country living 3 miles away. I think you forget that Barnes is already better than everyone on our team minus Brackins. He would start TODAY on every team in the country
