Atmosphere at JTS

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm more of a "transplant" Cyclone fan so it's fun hearing about some of these games. Go Cyclones!

Hands Down:

Colorado (2005) "Tornado Game" - Big 12 North is on the Line. Night Game so everyone was jacked up. Just a crazy Pre-Game with all the weather concerns.

Colorado tornado game

de-pantsing of Tate game

Those two came to mind for me too...... great atmosphere at both. Electricity in the air for the CU game. Also the TT game with "The Run" was a high HP offensive shootout and fun, but didn't compare to the other two.

That's about what we had for Army this year, right?

I hope when everyone looks at attendance in JTS from 2008 on, they remember that there are only 43,000 physical seats (until the bowl in). Everything else is hillside.

50,532 for the Army game last fall. I would be happy if they even did the south endzone in phases. Do the lower bowl first, then fund the upper deck. Once the upper deck is done, I wouldn't sell the north hillsides, but rather cheap upper deck tickets.

Holy Crap. That place looks packed. How many people were there that day?
It was packed. I don't know what the attendance was but it had to be one of the top three or four. There were only gaps in the crowd because of the people lined up along the sidelines and down on the field.

Notice the temporary bleachers in the north end zone-the Jacobsen Building wasn't there then of course. And we didn't have the "non-breakable" goalposts then either. I believe the south end zone goalpost was down before the game was over. I'd have to review the pictures again to be sure. If I remember correctly, the south end zone goalpost was marched the length of the field, taken out of the stadium and marched all the way to Lake LaVerne where it was dumped.

Just looked it up... says 51,500.
And that was in the old configuration. The old configuration had 46,000 seats, if you include standing room it brought the capacity to just over 50,000. The record attendance in the old configuration was the Nebraska game in 1990 at 54,475.

It's quite possible that we will break the all time record attendance of 56,795 during this season. It could be against Nebraska on Nov 6, 2010 depending on how well we do up to that point. I think I'll bring my camera for that game!

Pretty cool video of Iowa 07 post game storming of the field.

Here's a funny video of a cop going through the tailgating lots telling people to take shelter before the 2005 Colorado game.
Possible bad language at the end.

I'm going to throw out the UNLV game from a couple years ago when their players refused to leave the field. Maybe not the best atmosphere I've ever experienced at JTS, but easily one of the most memorable. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Thought there was going to be a riot. It was pretty awesome.

I'll toss in another vote for the tornado game against CU. It was absolute pandemonium when Brent Curvey returned that INT for a TD.

Second for me would be the 2007 Iowa game. It was kind of ho-hum at the beginning because most in the crowd were thinking we were going to get smoked after having lost to freaking Kent State and UNI to start the season. It was neat to see and feel the crowd getting whipped into a frenzy as the game wore on.

For all the young bucks on this board...

1976 - Nebraska
1981 - Iowa (first Cy-Hawk game in Ames since the 1930s)
1984 - Oklahoma (first-ever night game at CS/JTF, Homecoming weekend, OU ranked #2, ESPN national telecast)
1992 - Nebraska

At all but the 92 nebby game. had to work and couldn't get out of it. I did talk my foreman into letting me have my radio on and went out of my mind when MS took off on that long run...I remember it like it was yesterday though - especially since there were two others' listening with me and they were nebby fans! they just couldn't believe what they were hearing.

The ou game in 84 was a great game - and one our Cyclones should have won...but as usual ou just seemed to find ways to win - and they did!
