Assistant coach rumor I am hearing

Oh give me a break. Since when has there ever been a claim that our assistants were these "super-geniuses" that you speak of? It looks as if the only hand-picked "super-genius" ever to grace the company of our fine coach's company was one Mr. Ben Jacobsen.

You're right. My Bad. Instead of enclosing that phrase in quotes like it was a direct quotation from someone, I should have surounded it with Sarc. Pirates. Sorry.

Does Grayer have a degree and is one required for the job.

I know he came back a few years ago - with LE I think. He was introduced at the pre-season shootout as a student assistant coach. I thought I heard that he left later that year without getting a degree.

Yesterday on KXNO Ken Miller heard from a reliable source that a former player from the 1980's was on the radar. Ken would not say that it was Grayer but did say that if you opened your box of crayola crayons that you could find the answer in there. After thinking about it I could only come up with Grayer. It think it would be a great hire and we could possibly get a Flint pipeline of talent along with other parts of Michigan.

You know what I'd like to see?

For once, I'd like to see a GMac team play the first game of the Big 12 BB tournament against a team with a lower seed than we have. That's it. I don't need to see him get a first round bye. I don't need to see a championship banner in Hilton. Just show me that you can place in the top half of the bottom two-thirds of our conference, and I'll consider that to be significant improvement.

After all, you've got to crawl before you can walk.

Are you holding your breath?

We lost our best possible recruiter in Daniyal Robinson. If McDermott couldn't convince DR (a native Iowan) to stay one more year in Ames, who is going to want to relocate to ISU for what very well could be a 10-month stay?

I have the feeling he has at least two more years no matter what happens next season. The buyout is too much.

Not so fast. You don't remember Kyle Burnt-Umber?

Let's make a list of pros and cons for Grayer:

Pros: former ISU great, former NBA player, people say he's nice

Cons: little to no coaching experience, just fired from his current job for performance issues

Please elaborate. I hadn't heard that. Is it in this thread (I haven't looked)?

I still think it might be Lamar Cauliflower.

Yes. I linked it several pages back.

I was trying to figure out what he had really been up to and found an article from December where he was fired by the school district in Flint for performance issues.

I'm guessing Grayer has interest. I'm guessing we don't.

He could finish hos coursework in the next 2-3 years possibly.

EXCELLENT POINT! The thing is that I have no real interest in the career of Nick Nurse. He seems like a nice guy, but what do I know? I feel like I have an emotional investment in Jeff Grayer, because of our shared ISU legacy.

If Nick Nurse jumps aboard the HMS McDermott and crashed into the iceberg with the rest of the staff, it sucks to be him but that's the nature of coaching.

If Jeff Grayer goes down with that ship, we run the risk of alienating a great former player and a good guy who still loves ISU and the fanbase. I really hate the idea of that being a possibility.
Honestly, I have a feeling Jeff Grayer could care less what you think of him, and what you think of his taking this job...is this program's sole purpose to please you, personally?

You got enough time for a remedial course in logic? You don't understand the whole concept of "exaggeration to prove a point", or are you going to demand that I produce tape of GMac cultists saying those EXACT PHRASES before you put down your torches & pitchforks?

Here's the Cliff Notes of what I said. Ask some of the other guys to help you out with the big scary words if you find something you don't understand.

I respect Jeff Grayer as a man and as an ISU icon.

I believe that the main reason for the consideration for adding him to the staff is that he will quiet some of the criticism from those unreasonable idiots who think that an 18-50 conference record over 4 years is unacceptable.

I believe that some of GMac's more vocal defenders will spin any legitimate criticism of GMac's failings as the MBB coach into unreasonable attacks on an ISU icon.

I hope for the best if Jeff Grayer is hired to be an assistant coach at ISU, but I fear that he won't be able to overcome the mistakes already made here and the relationship between Jeff and the fanbase may suffer. That would suck. He doesn't deserve any blame for what's happened before his hiring, and as an apprentice coach, he'll be damn near blameless for everything bad that may happen even AFTER his hire. I worry that his blind loyalty to ISU might cloud his judgement and get him to hitch his wagon to a loser.

You keep posting, but your posts aren't getting any better.

Just an observation...

I understand that, but I would imagine there are hundreds of other coaches out there with stronger coaching credentials and stronger recruiting ties than Grayer that would be willing to coach here. I'm not even saying I would be against the hire, I am just saying that this hire is, in many respects, a pub. rel. stunt.

He's an assistant coach who excelled as a collegiate player, may have been a great pro but for injuries, and has coached and recruited for professional sports for years. He's been trying to get into the college game for a while so my guess is JP/GMac didn't seek out Jeff, but he has continually sought out ISU.

A lot of what CYlent Bob is saying isn't really off at all. He's pointing out that our program is in rough shape (at best), and hopes that coming here wouldn't be a damper to a Cyclone legend's coaching career. That's a legitimate concern right there.

*prepares himself to speak to someone who obviously doesn't have a complete grasp of what's going on around him*

Me like Grayer. Grayer good person. Me remembers Grayer fondly as a Cyclone. Me even ride elevator with Grayer few times, and Grayer always pleasant to me. If me have any say in matter, me want Grayer to succeed as a coach; but me sad if Grayer come to ISU now, because he not succeed here working for Mr. Integrity. Me be sad if Grayer's career suffer because he want to help ISU play more better.

You understand?

I forgot how much I enjoy reading CYlent Bob posts!

Just like, in your opinion, the team was going to be good this past year?

See you say a lot of stuff like this, but I have rarely seen and truth come of it.

Have you ever added any information on these boards or do you just take potshots at the guys who try and provide relevant information?
