Assistant coach rumor I am hearing

On that note maybe we should hire a baby polar bear...they're lovable...looking.

This one evidently knows soccer...I'm sure he'll pick up basketball quickly.

Who could hate baby polar bears?

aawwwww.

Anybody know what Grayer has been up to? From what I can tell he was the head coach of the Flint Fuze (CBA) and then the director of recruiting for the Genesee County Patriots North American Football League Franchise.

Jeff Grayer - Hoopedia

I was at ISU for Jeff's last couple of years, and I still love the guy. He's a quality man who represents the ISU community with integrity (real integrity, not fake PR integrity).

What bothers me is the OBVIOUS use of this hire to try and quiet deserved criticism of GMac by the non-KoolAid drinkers. "Hey, we've got Grayer on the staff! You can't say anything negative about the GMac or the staff now, because you're slamming Grayer! What kind of a pervert doesn't like Grayer? Probably the same sort who likes to strangle puppies."

I really, really hope this hire works out, but with Jeff's relatively small resume at this point in his career, my opinion is that he's being trotted out as a diversionary tactic, and I for one have too much respect for what Jeff Grayer means to ISU to want to see his legacy tarnished this way.

You should live by your name. SHow me where anyone has said those things.

I share some of your concerns. But what has been a big problem the past 4 years? People that don't like Iowa State enough to put up with a coach that they feel treats them unfairly. With someone like Jeff, we'd have someone who could get some people pumped about Iowa State and could relate to them since he was a player here. He knows what it is like to have a coach yell and scream at them. He knows what it is like to be homesick and ready to quit (he almost left after his first semester here). There are some good things there.

Look at it this way. JP could not afford the buyout. Greg was staying. Do what can you do to persuade the troops to keep the faith. You fire the staff and bring on local Energy and Grayer a fan favorite? What else can you do to make the years pass?

Jesus on the pine with GMac.

What are you talking about? You really expect someone to come out and say "We hired him because he will provide a PR boost"? C'mon. The fact that he is a beloved Cyclone is inherent in the reasoning behind his hire. He has no coaching experience, and no recruiting ties. His best attribute is that he is a lovable and loyal Cyclone. No one has to come out and say it, but the hire itself speaks clearly to that point.

Yes, because coaching in the CBA and being a big name in the state of Michigan will do nothing for us.

That did stop people from wanting to hire Fred Hoiberg...

I understand that, but I would imagine there are hundreds of other coaches out there with stronger coaching credentials and stronger recruiting ties than Grayer that would be willing to coach here. I'm not even saying I would be against the hire, I am just saying that this hire is, in many respects, a pub. rel. stunt.
