I'm hearing a lot of talk about former Cyclone Jeff Grayer possibly coming on board to replace Daniyal Robinson. A handful of sources seem awfully consistent about this one. I'd say that this is all TALK right now but it is certainly an intriguing story to keep an eye on for the rest of this week.

I think his official title would be Assistant Coach/Attempting Public Relations Stunt. I think it's clear the reasoning behind this one is "You can't hate Grayer, he was a great Cyclone! Grayer is on the staff, so you can't hate the staff, or you hate Grayer, and thus you hate great cyclones."

Well, everything is "all talk" until it's proven. Anyway, I'm thinking of Grayer on board. I don't know how much he's coached in the last decade or two, but I know he loves ISU and would probably be very committed to the job. Could be good if he can coach.

Let's see - He lead the league in scoring....was Defensive Player Of The Year....there's got to be someplace on this staff he could help our team improve!

Welcome home Jeff!

like that show "Human Shield'?

I like Jeff a lot. I really hope this works.

Does Jeff have any recruiting or coaching experience?

Just curious, think that it would be a good person to have around the program.

Add in that he was a great rebounder who was a post player in high school and learned how to play on the perimeter at ISU and you have the complete package.

He would bring more fundamental coaching, player relationship development, etc types skills than recruiting. That is a good thing in my opinion though because we've shown over the past several years that it doesn't matter who you bring in if they aren't being developed and molded into quality players. Same goes for Nurse; he doesn't bring stateside recruiting but does bring overseas ties. He too is more of a coaching assistant over a recruiting assistant.

He might recruit Michigan and Illinois areas? He might keep the CCs from quitting.

It won't matter if he doesn't know how to coach/teach other people how to do it. You could be the smartest person in the world, but if nobody knows what the **** you're saying, then who cares?

I don't know what you're saying here.....

I was at ISU for Jeff's last couple of years, and I still love the guy. He's a quality man who represents the ISU community with integrity (real integrity, not fake PR integrity).

What bothers me is the OBVIOUS use of this hire to try and quiet deserved criticism of GMac by the non-KoolAid drinkers. "Hey, we've got Grayer on the staff! You can't say anything negative about the GMac or the staff now, because you're slamming Grayer! What kind of a pervert doesn't like Grayer? Probably the same sort who likes to strangle puppies."

I really, really hope this hire works out, but with Jeff's relatively small resume at this point in his career, my opinion is that he's being trotted out as a diversionary tactic, and I for one have too much respect for what Jeff Grayer means to ISU to want to see his legacy tarnished this way.

Agreed on all counts.

Steve - You are correct. I just saw that he lead the league in scoring & rebounding & DPOTY....but somehow Manning got MVP of the Big 8 that year.

Ken Miller made reference today about someone from the mid-80s "coming home" as a possible new assistant.

On that note maybe we should hire a baby polar bear...they're lovable...looking.

This one evidently knows soccer...I'm sure he'll pick up basketball quickly.

Who could hate baby polar bears?
