Anyone ever have canceled classes?

Monday, April 9th, 1973. Spring blizzard. Dumped 10 - 12 inches of snow. Had 30 - 35 mph winds. Weird part was that visually it was a bad --- blizzard, but the temperature was around 25 degrees. (Is there such a thing as a warm blizzard ?). Anyway classes were dismissed at noon. Classes canceled for Tuesday, April 10. My birthday. One and only time that I have gotten to celebrate my birthday with a snow vacation day. Played poker with my room-mates for 20 hours straight. Fortunes were made and lost in that game. (Lived over on North Hyland in '73).

Twice.

Winter 90-91 due to snow. And Summer of 93 due to the floods. That wasn't a complete closing, they had a few AM classes.

I think I remember them saying something back then too, about ISU only canceling school so many times since the earth was new. I think it's a bit of an urban legend.

I went to OCS at Camp Dodge during those floods. That Land Navigation course was a whole different beast underwater.

They cancelled class a couple times in the 1996 and 1997. I think both times it was the start of the spring term. One time was for extremely cold temps -80 wind chill and the other time was a terrible ice storm ~ Cy ride was going sideways down Lincoln way.

I remember the one in 96, I believe. IIRC, it was the day after MLK Day. Really bad ice storm. One of those days where I'm glad it was canceled, cuz I was skipping anyway. I had a lot of days that I was skipping anyway, and classes were not canceled. Probably why I'm not a doctor today...

didnt the 90-91 have a bunch of ice as well. i remember sliding on the sidewalks around campus. crazy kids.

Iowa State may already know that they are canceling tomorrow, but they won't release until the middle of the night. They don't want us doing anything stupid, fun haters!

"Oh, Frank. You forgot your birthday?"

"What? Damnit!!"

Yea back in spring '07 there was a bad ice storm that forced them to cancel classes on a Thursday afternoon. All classes after noon were cancelled...but IIRC we still had class Friday?

this but I didnt have classes that thursday afternoon so nothing was really canceled for me.

If its the same storm, i remember a really big ice storm hitting the area when i was like... 5 (which would be 1990)

No - that one was alot like today. Tons of snow. (We were playing football outside at RCA)

I think there was a nasty ice storm that year too, or perhaps the following (fall '92?). Ice was horrible on campus. Tree damage like crazy and one kid got nailed pretty bad by a big limb that came down.

I think they only cancelled PM classes in that one.

I'm already drinking because my 8 am class is canceled by the professor for tommorrow

They have canceled classes - but they rarely shut down the university. If they do the employees have to take a vacation day (a sick day if their department will let them) or day without pay. My boss has been at the university for over 30 years and he explained that to me today!

I don't plan on go in to work tomorrow if it is questionable.

FarmClone - is your 8:00 Dr. Tyler's class?

Nope, Dr. Baas but the main reason it is canceled is because the class is at the teaching farm, requiring students to drive. Either way I'm enjoying it.

In one of those years I got up and got on CyRide and as soon as it arrived on campus they announced that classes were canceled. Thanks.

I also remember in 1994 (January) it was -20 one day but it was the day before class I think. That winter there was ice everywhere and almost everyone on campus did the arms up in the air, fall on your backside move at one time or another. It was also when the path from Old RCA to the Union was a slope, before they put stairs in. It was interesting pulling yourself up the chains to get up the hill.

I have only a vague recollection of class being canceled once while I was there F89 through S95. I know that in December of 89 it was -40 and classes were not canceled. It was either quiet week or finals week I forget which.

What are you talking about Richard? Lots of people go to college for 7 years.:jimlad:

Grad School?

I read somewhere classes have been canceled by the university only 3 times since 1858? Don't know if that's true. Can anyone shed some light on this?

They just tell you that so you dont think it happens a lot. There were canceled twice that I can remember when I was in college.
