McKay hasn't been outjumping anyone. Time to give someone else a chance.

Nader has had some outstanding alley oops, how about giving him a try? As I recall, Hogue wasn't the tallest player out there, but he won a fair share of tip offs.

I suppose you are against winning the toss and deferring in football as well? Honestly jumping the ball to start the game would mean more if they also did it to start 2nd half.

I was wondering how stupid people on here could get. You are really pushing the envelope OP.

How about changing ball screen defense. Drew ran that play 30 times in a row. And we never stopped it.

It's not all on McKay, our tip-off defense as a whole has been junk this year.

There is actually an article out there about KU puts a big emphasis on the opening tip and they have gained a 2% advantage because of it.

There is a chance a team could get one extra possession by winning the opening tip. There is no chance of this if you lose it. So yes, it is a bit bigger of a deal than people let on.

Exactly. Winning the tip means you are guaranteed at least as many possessions on jump balls and first/second half opening possessions as the other team, and possibly one more, depending on how many jump balls there are. The team who loses the opening tip does not gain a single advantage. Now how important that is who knows, but it does have its advantage.

IIRC, Hogue wasn't the original jump ball designee. He got the job after limited success. After he got a chance, he became quite good at it.

Don't get the hate for this topic. There is no animosity toward McKay, just want to get an advantage, and it's an easy try. Maybe they have done that in practice, don't really know.

Link? That sounds like complete ********. How is the possibility of getting one extra possession add up to a 2% advantage?

I believe within 10 years they will get rid of the opening tip. If you watch enough games you will realize how bad some refs are at throwing the ball up.

When you get an extra possession and average a little over a point per possession. 1.2/70 points = 1.7 % advantage.
