Anyone drive today yet?

I walked to work in Ames. Along the way I helped two people push their cars out of the snow. But they were both stuck in what the snow plows pushed off of the streets, as the driveways had not been cleared yet.

Even though it wasn't that difficult last night, a good one-third of my shift called in. About half of the day shift called in as well. (The phone rings over the production floor speakers after 5 PM, so we can count the calls.)

One thing I've learned at this job is that these folks, no matter how much/little they have, they all pay that phone bill.

The side roads in WDM were horrible...not plowed at all. But the main roads (Grand, EP, Mills Civic, etc.) were ok, same as they usually are after a snow. A little slower commute but not much.

I couldn't get out of my WDM development with my weak *** 2wd vehicles.

Oh well, that's the beauty of remote access to work.

Beaverdale to Ankeny, the back way through Johnston was just fine... Getting out of my neighborhood was the hardest part...

I'm in Beaverdale too and the side streets here are a mess. Just got in from snow blowing and will probably make the trek here soon. Tough stuff to plow through and I have a 2 stage 6.5 HP snowblower! That sleet is thick and packed down good, practically had to blow it off in layers till I got to the concrete. About 3 passes did it, the first one just had to get what you could because the tires got no traction on that stuff!

You probably helped me, I didn't get quite enough momentum going to break through the 3-foot drift the snowplows leave at the end of our driveways. I saw others with simliar problems.

Anybody been on the interstate north of Ames? I'm supposed to head up to the Cities this afternoon and I'm trying to gauge conditions.

Fortunately, we don't have that problem in Omaha. Unfortunately, it's because they don't plow side streets at all.

At 4:00 from DSM to Ames: Absolutely turible (thanks Sir Charles)
At 6:30 from Ames to DSM Int'l: Not bad, but not good
At 7:30 from DSM to Ames: Fine

Funny how we get 6" of snow we all drive to work normally except for driving a bit slower. But imagine what Arizona, Florida or California people would do if they got this much snow. The town would be shut down for days.

I'm driving from Muscatine to Urbandale tonight. What's I-80 like? I hear the roads are pretty wet...should I leave early before the temp drops and stuff starts to freeze?

Hey at least they got around to plowing your street. Our street in west Ames still hasn't been touched at 12:30.

I have relatives visiting that don't own a four wheel drive vehicle. I have to tow their car with my 4 x 4 truck otherwise they couldn't make it up my half mile drive to my house. But this is in Northwest Colorado where the days it snows are the norm and the days that it doesn't snow are freakish.
