Another recruiting MISS

People, the fans aren't the problem.

This is true. But some of us think that we can be part of the solution by portraying the type of fan a recruit wants to play for and not continuing to focus on all of our problems... but help show the good things ISU has going for them that make us an appealing school.

Is there anything wrong with that?

I don't think there are many on here who wants CF to be censored so that nobody can voice their concerns. I (who can only speak for myself) just wish that if a basketball recruit did happen to come on here... they'd see more than just the top 10 basketball theads being transformed to GMAC must be fired threads.

I'd like for them to see how a lot of us are excited and would love to see them play, rather than that many of us will never see them play because we refuse to renew tickets until the coach that they would be committing to is gone.

I'd like for them to read about the new practice facility, I'd like them to leave the site with a good impression of ISU... so maybe they realize ISU may not be so bad of a home for them... rather than thinking that they shouldn't commit because a lot of fans are saying that for the recruit's sake, he better not choose us if he wants to win...

I talked to a former recruit's dad yesterday...and he still looks at CF daily, although his son chose to go elsewhere, and he expressly stated that he believes CF hurts ISU recruiting.

Did all of the cyber-asskissing done on this site for Harrison Barnes and his mother land him for ISU? I recall all kinds of positive talk about both him/his family as well as what ISU would do with him in the fold.

What about your post that Eikmeier was akin to Steph Curry...did that make it so?

My, my...what power the internet has.

Plus, if all of you are so sure that comments on this board have a negative effect on recruits, then explain why Harrison Barnes is not going to be a Cyclone? Up until the day he signed, he received nothing but positive comments, almost to the point of worship in some cases. So, if the message board is so important, shouldn't this board have been able to influence Harrison's decision?

See how ridiculous that sounds? To me, any recruit that would put too much weight behind things said on a message board is probably not worth signing. I think he/she may be lacking the ability to make sound decisions.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the same posters who responded to the Hamilton "mistreated" talk by saying that Hamilton was too sensitive to criticism and his dad meddled are the same ones who are saying that CF negativity hurts recruiting?

Yes.

There is another way to look at this. If you really think that recruits pay that much attention to what is said on a message board......

I think that CF is going to be one of the best message boards associated with a BCS school that a recruit can find. It is not a pay site. It is not tied to a major recruit rating system. All those are positives.

So a recruit comes on here, and what does he/she see? Thousands of ISU fans......THOUSANDS.......registered on a site and talking about everything under the sun, including both the good and the bad in relation to nearly everything Iowa State. He/she will see a fan base that shows a lot of emotion about a program that is not succeeding. If he/she reads enough of the posts, they will come to the conclusion that all Iowa State fans want is to win.......period.

Now is that really a bad thing for a recruit to see? Wake up!

Everyone settle down, it is just the Mac people using another excuse.
The facilities aren't good enough, Can't win in the big 12 with MVC recruits, Big time recruits are brats...
Now they have been reduced to "it's the message boards"
They are all desperate attempts to validate themselves, it is very sad, but it is what it is.

Wow. Dryburn, you can't be serious. Didn't you know there was one thread among the 1000s of "HB is our basketball Jesus" threads that said something to the extent of "HB is overrated"? I have sources that tell me that upon viewing that single thread, Harrison decided that Cyclone Nation was much too negative for him and called Roy the next day.

Just speaking for myself considering I've been one of the guys leading the fight on the side of CF comments can hurt recruits researching ISU as an option. I challenge you to find a single post where I have stated Ham was too soft or sensitive or his dad meddled.

Only posting this so I don't get grouped in with a generalization that does not represent me whatsoever.

That's fair. I don't think you were really involved in the Hamilton thing. I should have said SOME of the same posters.. My bad.

I agree... this is definately a great thing for ISU. But instead of thinking on a 0-10 scale of 0 being 100% negative talk about ISU, 10 being 100% positive talk about ISU, I personally picture it on a -10 to +10 scale.

This ease of access makes it easier to see ISU in the bad times as well. I'm perfectly fine with negative concerns. I just wish the average of this site were in the positive side of the scale.

One poster said they see 75% positive comments in a new recruit thread to 25% negative. I'm glad to hear this. I personally get the impression of 75% negative and 25% positive.

What the actual value is... I don't know. But I'm glad that some people are seeing this board in more positive light than I have been lately.

Personally, I think it is pretty positive. Again, people are not happy about the losing, and want to see something done. How is that not positive? To me, accepting what has gone on the last four years, and expecting it to change for some unknown, irrational reason is negative, and unrealistic. Like I said before, if you want there to be positive posts about the ISU MBB program........THEN WIN! Problem solved.

Question...if HB had signed with ISU...who would have been given the credit? GM or CF.

I think our proximity to his family, GM, our facilities (practice and Hilton), our academic support, our assitant coaches and future teammates of HB would more deserving of credit. But I think CF is also a factor here too. He read the boards and you knew it as soon as various info was stated about his recruitment that he went public about to clarify.

You hear recruits all the time say that the 'fan support is amazing here' and the fans really show that they want me.

Part of this is at the games (but when half of the time people come back to CF asking "Who was XYZ recruit at the game today?" I doubt there are many fans walking up to these guys telling them by name that we hope they sign with us) half of it is probably research about what the fans are saying about them online (including CF).

I may be wrong... it's just my opinion.

Not that I'll add much to this...but...the idea that this message board is hurting our recruiting chances is moronic.

The idea that recruits somehow overlook the 4 year history of suck we've put on the court. Then overlook all the transfers. Then after that they overlook our record in and out of the Big 12. Then, just as they are ready to commit they google Cyclone Athletics and stumble upon CF and read a few posts...then say..."holy crap that was close! I almost committed to ISU and their program is a mess! Thankfully I found out the truth on CF before I signed the LOI!"

Our recruiting problems are EXACTLY why programs fire coaches in this situation. Right or wrong the reality is that you have a limited amount of time in ANY JOB to prove you can perform. There are no sales reps out there with 12 years at a company when they've never met a quota.

That would be me. I honestly don't feel like we degrade recruits as much as some like to have us believe. I've seen enough 2 star guys turn into studs and enough 5 star busts that I won't judge before I see them on the court/field.

This is the type of discussion that IS NOT Needed! Calling people names isn't a way to have a good conversation. I think it's unrealistic to believe it doesn't come into play. People aren't saying this is the sole or primary reason, just a possible tipping point that doesn't help (the negativity... good example being this)

maybe - if we all just used a little tact?

No matter what anyone says...this website is hurting our recruiting. It's not the only thing but I can promise you it is substantial.

This is a stupid post and I hate it when people use this card... Are we the only flipping University with a message board??? Heck no... So why does it hurt us and not others?? Please think before you post people.

This board is not hurting us anymore then Hawkeye Nation hurts Iowa, gopowercats hurts KSU, or what ever message board North Carolina has. Get a clue..

I do hate the negativity, but you find that on any message board. Like I said a week or so ago, this is one of the most tame message board and fan sites I have ever seen.

He never called the guy a moron.. Just the idea moronic. Totally different... He didn't attack a person...

Calling names is never a good way to continue a conversation and too many people on this board would rather flame and name call anytime their idea gets called stupid. If more then 2 people disagree with a post the poster gets defensive and starts the name calling. Love to see how these people handle work and everyday life.

Okay - I see your point, It's a pretty subtle difference though. IMO
btw - i always try to be respectful and understand people thoughts on this topic.
I have them too... I just don't like negativity, and can't believe it helps us.

I know what your saying.... I know I say a lot of moronic things from time to time and my wife, brothers, or friends will call me out on it. Hope that doesn't make me a moron.

Negativity will happen no matter what. IN good times or bad times, someone will always be negative. Just life. Gotta live with it. Some people are that way 24/7. You're just wasting your time if you think you will change everyone's mind.
