Another recruiting MISS

The negativity, and general trashing of Cyclone Basketball by so-called "fans" is what hurts it.

How much more negativity do prospective recruits absorb from the "naysayers" on CF than they get from the abysmal mishandling of the program by GMac? 20%? 50% 10,000,000%? I'd appreciate if you'd give me a ballpark estimate.

I don't want to disparage your youth, because you seem to be enthusiastic about ISU sports; HOWEVER I do think the fact that guys like me have pubic hairs that are older than you are could give us somewhat of a historical perspective on the program that you might be lacking.

You should take our criticism of GMac as voices of experience, and try to learn from them. Partly because you should learn to have a healthy respect for your elders.....but mostly because we're right in this case....and I really don't enjoy having to say "I told you so" over & over again.

Again - not nice!!! geez, do we REALLY need to get personal, especially the 'adults'. Yes, I am one, and act it.. Please don't knock others for giving an opinion. It IS pretty clear that negativity DOESN'T HElP US!! I'm not sure some 'fans' want THIS team and THIS coach to suceed, correct?
Sad....

If every morning I took a leak in your cheerios.... that would get pretty old. If I did it every day for a couple years, Im assuming you would start waking up and look to eat something besides cheerios.

I would hope that you wouldnt just pray that for the first time in 767 straight daysI left your cereal alone.

U don't know me, so - frankly, don't insult me!!!! You want to talk constructively, great! Otherwise... leave it alone please.

Everyone has the right to their opinion.
You'll find in life, talking politely with others in life will get you further in life... just an fyi.

News Flash - Cars Cause Global Warming...

So... How many people are going to hop on their horse to get into work tomorrow? The reality is Al Gore said the internet isn't going to go away.

The negativity that can exist on message boards, can only hurt recruiting. No question. But I bet message boards might rank at best 3rd in the list of information sources they have access to and influence their decisions.
  • Their coaches- HS/AAU
  • Other college coaches - You're naive if you don't think negative recruiting exists.
  • Current players - Do people not think that Clyburn has talked to Buckley?
Word gets around. The college BB fraternity is small and people talk. Message boards just reiterate what recruits are already hearing.

Not an insult.. Just an analogy.

We aren't less of fans because we cant stand GMAC. We just have had this stuff happen to us for 5 years. That isn't bad luck. It is for certain inability to go anywhere.

I dont like people saying we are less of fans because we cant stand our head coach and anything that he has done for us in the last 5 years.

I want the Washington Generals to really lay the wood onto the Globetrotters just once.

I want Charlie Brown to kick the damn football already.

I want the coyote to catch the roadrunner.

I regularly cheer for 16 seeds to beat 1 seeds in the NCAA tourney.

The difference between me and you? I don't think that if I cheer hard enough, the underdog will beat the vastly superior team, and I'm darn sure not going to bet money on the outcome, unless the point spread is astronomical. This is real life, not "Peter Pan": No matter how hard the fanbase claps during the games, Tinkerbelle isn't getting back into the mix and helping us win.

These are all things I wish to happen because I like to see underdogs win, but when it comes to ISU sports I believe that my attendance at ISU and at ISU sporting events gives me more skin in the game than I have with other cultural activities. I get ****** when ISU sucks, and I want to see our players and coaches succeed every time they step onto the court. That doesn't blind me to the apparent fact that ISU has a handicap at the head of the MBB program that's holding us back.

Read my previous post again. I asked him to take criticism from his elders (which would be darn near all of us here) as being given lovingly and....dare I say it.... "for his own good".

Thanks for clarifying that. My bad, read it too quickly.
I actually agree, i just don't think we need to rehash all the time.
Greg Mc. will be our coach next year and we shoul HOPE the best players come to ISU to play for him.
thanks for the msg. back.

So in other words.........you'll be having cheerios again tomorrow morning?

Good for you, but may I make a suggestion? I noticed that ajk4st8 was spending WAY too much time over in the corner with your box of strawberry Pop-Tarts, so could I interest you in bacon & eggs for breakfast tomorrow?

And your solution is......ban all negative comments or shut the site?:jimlad:

The 15 win a year, 11 in non conference, lack of post season experience, numerous transfers, transfer of staff, probably does carry less weight than the gunslingers on this website.
A common theme that I can remember hearing is how much support our fans have for our athletics programs -- without regard for their success. Whether it's wrestling or women's BB or football getting 5 wins in 2 years . . .

Ok if recruits read this board and take things as fact, here goes nothing:

If I were a recruit, I would come to Iowa State. Our program is one of the best in the nation, and is a proven winner. Don't let facts lead you astray...we are without doubt one of the best programs. We are up there with Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas as far as sustained excellence goes. Our athletic director has shown his continued support to further this program, which I realize is hard to believe as we are already on the verge of perfection.

Our coach, Greg McDermott, is maybe the best in the business. His leadership style is unquestionably successful, and every player who has ever come through his program has left with nothing but great things to say about him. You may come across misleading numbers about how many players have transfered out of his system, but you know the saying "when you love something, let it go". Coach McDermott's relationship is similar to that of a mother bird his his young chicks. After a few years under his watchful eye it becomes time for the now mature birds to leave the roost, and fly away to locations such as Baton Rouge, Toledo and Germany. Don't look at these defections as anything other than a labor of love.

So un-named recruit, please consider Iowa State. You will win championships here, you will become an all-Big 12 basketball player, and you will become an NBA All-Star. While here, you will build a rock solid relationship with our "player relationship centered" coach, who is in no way in jeopardy of losing his job. Please, do not let the facts inform you differently, we are the best program ever, with the best coach ever.

Better?

I just had a mental picture of you saying all this while sitting on a Unicorn posed in front of a rainbow & holding the Stanley Cup filled with ice cold Shiner Bock. :jimlad:

Almost forgot: The rest of the fanbase is humming "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" quietly in the background during the whole thing.

A thing of beauty, man! It almost makes all that unwatchable basketball worth it just to get the positive spin out there. :jimlad:

True, but their fans are very demanding and very spoiled, don't you think?
After four years of plastic basketball, we are getting there too. Each year that passes, people see less hope for a turnaround unless major surgery is done. Dropping a hundred plays might help.

It would be a microcosm of, not a microcosm.

The internet plays a very large role in it. If you choose to be believe yourself, rather than the word of someone who has experienced it personally (Not me, but player's father) then go right ahead.

We can blow sunshine if that will get us wins:

CF is probably the quickest and easiest way to get info about ISU athletics. It also has the most volume of opinions.

Speaking with the coach... you're going to get exactly what you expect to get. You'll get some negative insight about our program from coaches recruiting against us probably... but where does the recruit confirm this stuff?

Does he go door to door in Ames asking for people's opinions? No.

Does he subscribe to the local newspaper? No.

Does he research on the Web? Yes.

CF is going to be at the top of the list of discussions involving his name as it relates to ISU... and the state of the program he is considering joining.

You have every right to beleive that what is said on here has little to no effect. But I bet if we made a poll. The number of us who feel that it does hurt ISU to have so many negative comments... I think it would surprise those on the other side of the fense.

All they have to do is look at coaching records in wickipedia:
