Ok, I agree with you, its the coaches fault the kid had a minor theft from a bad check or shoplifting. Scratch that, it sounds just as stupid when I say it.
It was something of little value from the bookstore. I think it's one of those cases where he has basically no money and he took something that cost less than $20, something that could be used for his classes.
I live on a planet where reading and comprehension are taught at a young age.

I have a friend who got a 5th degree theft (deffered judgment), so it does exist. he stole 30 some bucks worth of stuff and did a year of probation. It's a misdemeanor.

Yes. NCAA rules allows educational materials as part of the scholarship. If he stole something required for his classes he has serious issues.
