Another Female Teacher 'Incident'

It's funny to me that so many of you are willing to give her a pass because she is attractive and would not have an issue getting someone her age. But, if she were less attractive or it were a male you seem more incline to believe that power of authority could have been used. Fundamentally this is an abuse of power regardless of looks.

Isn't the abuse of power an issue even with college professors and students? It isn't just an age of consent issue for high school. Schools must have policies and are certainly not going to deal with this on a case-by-case basis in advance. Many companies and departments have policies regarding co-workers and certainly regarding supervisors and direct reports.

Assuming consent on all parties - and it appears to be that way, I agree not really a victim here other than the letter of the law. However, I suppose its a slippery slope if this was allowed to happen by law.

Makes me wonder how people find out...one of the 3 guys can't help but brag and word gets out?

I'm alright with having age limits on one's ability consent so long as you couple it with some prosecutorial discretion. Talk to the kid(s) involved, find out the details, and determine if this was in any way predatory. If it wasn't plead her down to something with probation. If it was, then you have laws on the books to provide extra protections to the minor.

Oh no, this would make it so hard to be a lawyer or prosecutor and delay the system. The horror. If you are going to bring criminal charges for what we think this women has done and ruin her life for it then it should be hard. Most juries would not have a problem convicting real cases of abuse.

Is society going to be any better off with her serving time in jail and forever being on the sexual predator list? Fired from her job would be one thing, easily handled by the employment contract, as she probably shouldn't be working in education.

While I do understand how difficult it would be, I completely agree with the last paragraph.

no one is turning them in. boys are bragging and word gets around.

I can think of one way to fix that

Yes it is, and most (if not all) states have different ages of consent if the elder person is in a trusted position. But once the younger person passes that age or age 18 the law does not have restrictions (although some states may have a provision if a high school student is 18 or older), it is up to the school/business to enforce its policies.

Yeah, that's not at all what I'm talking about.
An age of consent law means that there's no legal argument to be made for a person having sex with someone younger than what's stated in the statute.
Your plan to remove these laws and argue each one case by case, all of sudden gives incentive for an accused person to try to claim consent, when there was no incentive before.
Your plan would grant pedophiles additional opportunities to escape paying for their crimes.

Age of consent laws are not without their flaws, but there needs to be a baseline. And when it comes to children, I'm fine erring on the side of caution. I mean it's not like anyone's getting surprised by these laws.

Some of these rules are good and others are overboard. I'm a healthcare professional and can never have sexual relations with someone that has ever been my patient. Even if we ended the doctor-patient relationship and waited a year it would still be against our rules and I automatically get my license suspended for 2 years.

That is being a male. Our law professor told us being a female gets you one "get out of jail free card."

That's just plain stupid!

Yes, there are thousands of times a year that kids are surprised by these laws. Happens all the time. Two young people who, obviously have legal issues at the bottom of the I give a *** list, dating are caught up in these situations because of age of consent laws. Often one will be 18 and the other 16 or 17, which in two years is more than acceptable but can get them in deep shinola. Nobody knows even a fraction of all the laws and you can bet that young people know a whole lot less. They don't even have to be dating, just having a photo sent to them can get them on the sexual offender registry for the rest of their lives.

Hence the need for Romeo & Juliet laws, like we have in Iowa and many other states, which eliminate the scenario you described above. But getting rid of age of consent laws in general is just stupid, misguided, and plain creepy.

I'd let her abuse her power all over me.
