Ames tribune

I can see where he is coming from, but there comes a time when you have to defend yourself.

The College Sports World wants us to be the jovial, softass, "welcome to our humble city, take what you want from us", fanbase that doesn't rock the boat because we aren't supposed to.

If We're getting punched in the mouth (or stabbed in the back), you better believe We're coming out swinging.

I'm all for local media not bing homers, but this is just about page views. Many of the examples were just (like missed calls that were acknowledged as that) or generalizing (one idiot on twitter isn't all of us).

stories like this and Forde's are reminders we need real games...soon!

A lot of posters are right about standing up for their school during hose jobs. The referees and officials think it is O.K. to give the call the other way. For too many years we as fans have taken it and we have made their jobs easier by doing so. But I applaud that Charles Barkley and other National Media personnel have done the right thing and called out the injustices on National T.V.. My dad taught me growing up, that if a bully punches you in the face and you do nothing bout it. I guarantee you he will do it again because you are an easy target. But if you punch him back harder than he punched you, he will think twice next time.

The CycloneNation "feels" slighted often because we are slighted often. The past basketball season was one of the most consistent hose jobs I've ever seen a team take. Frankly, I think we should have been even more vocal about how we were handed unfair losses over and over again.

Be less Passionate, Bobby? No Thanks.

I have no problem with people calling out Ubben or Forde. Keep it civil, but respond to hatchet jobs/incompetence. Besides, Forde brought it on himself by not having justifications, and then taking a shot at us with the WVU comment. And sure, we shouldn't have thrown stuff, had one of our fans rushed the court, or tweeted racist stuff after the kansas game. Those things crossed the line. But I've always wondered what the reaction would have been like if Kansas had been hosed in the their game against us in Lawrence, and one of our players was an *** and dunked the ball at the end. I bet it would have been a whole lot worse.

I laugh somewhat at the irony of writing an article that slights Cyclone Fans about being too slighted. Bobby's email inbox will be full of defensive emails for the next 6 months.

Alanis said it best:

"You live, you learn
you love, you learn
you cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
you cry, you learn
you bleed, you learn
You scream, you learn"

I don't know Bobby at all but the way he wrote that article he sounded like an Squawkeye fan who loves to say that we are his little brother. Maybe its time for people like Bobby to acknowledge that ISU is every bit an athletic player in this state as the squawks . Then and only then will the bobby complaint go away... well bobby the ball is in your court are we as good as the squawks or are you a closet squawk? Inquiring minds would like to know. go cyclones beat the panthers

You've got it wrong. The irony is all the people up in arms about being reminded to stop freaking out about every imagined insult. Bobby raised a very good point. The way a lot of fans act makes me embarrassed to be an ISU fan sometimes. He didn't tell anybody to "sit down and take abuse without saying anything" or anything like that. He just reminded people that they don't have to go DEFCON 1 for every single thing.

I agree somewhat. Not everything, clearly, is worth going crazy about. It just isn't. I've personally have never gotten worked up about Ubben or Forde has written. Most of the time, I don't even read their stuff. The same with Bobby.

However, some of the situations he cites as evidence that we handled ourselves poorly wouldn't be handled any differently by any fanbase. If you put 14,000 people in a building and then have a game appear to be called unfairly with a dunk by the opposing team at the end when it wasn't necessary, there will be a poor reaction by a small percentage of fans. That's just the way it is. Regardless of which fans we are talking about. It is the bell curve of populations.

Consider this: ISU was eliminated from the NCAA basketball tourney due to a very suspect call that most would agree was a bad call.

So, while agree the bad behavior (booing, tweeting inappropriate comments, charging a coach) are completely unacceptable, to be passionate in defense of our team in the situations I've listed above is to be expected. Any fanbase would react the same way.

To me, silence on a slight towards ISU or Ames = agreement. If we don't speak up when someone says stupid crap like Forde (and whoever) and there's no reaction from us, everyone else who doesn't know any better assumes "guess that's how they feel, too." Can some of us handle these situations better? Sure, there's no doubt of that. But I will support anyone who will stand up and defend us (Ames/ISU) against ANYone talking smack who has never even been in this city.

He attacks ISU fans about the kansas game, that wasnt just ISU fans, that was the entire country. As far as being mad that some fans are giving other journalists crap, ive worked w/ 100's of journalists and I can tell you that they all stick up for each other right or wrong. It's like a union, thats why most of them suck.

He reads this message board too often, it's pretty clear, the majority of his articles are based off of discussion topics off of here which isnt a bad thing except for he thinks that the mindset of this board makes up the mindset of cyclone nation when in reality id say 75% of stuff said on this board is people being extreme to get a reaction out of other posters.

He is a nobody so I wouldnt be to offended.

But that wasn't his point. In fact his point was exactly what you are doing. Taking any kind of comment and turning it into something that is worth fighting to the death over. He was saying that is what needs to not happen. Is it alright to get upset with Forde or Ubben, or about bad calls? Yes, it certainly is. But that doesn't mean people need to flood twitter and comment boxes with threatening stuff in all caps. It makes us look bad and also instead of people focusing on the bad call itself, or on a reporter acting like we're beneath them; they end up focusing on how our fanbase looks like jackasses in our response. Reaction is fine, but right now people who act like Clones21 are the public face of our fanbase and that needs to change.

My dad taught me to never hit anyone in anger (unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it.)

I read Bobby's opinion and what I took from it is that he is a patronizing, bigoted individual that believes Iowa State fans when disrespected need to bend over and take it.

80 responses of whining and ******** will show him how wrong he is!

I stand by my original post. I think a lot of people are taking his article mostly the wrong way; I understand his points but just like anything you read online, you can't understand the true meaning and emotion behind what he wrote as there is no way to put that into an article to make others understand. He went overboard with a few things trying to get a point across, but no good Cyclones want to see other Cyclones acting fools all over the Internet. You can attack an article and a person for being an idiot like Forde without going overboard. Just make him out to look like the idiot he is and leave it at that.
