Ames tribune

Forde said Ames was the worst town with no justification or, really, anything other than just saying it. That's a slight, and it makes Forde look a lot worse than Ames. It's 2013, you want to say dumb crap on a national outlet with no justification what-so-ever? Go ahead, but you get what you deserve [and/or expected] when people light up your Twitter.

La Gesse Column: Change is needed in Cyclone Nation

I am kind of mad at Bobby, after reading this article. What does the cyclone nation think about this?

Not mad but confused. Is Ames the worst and Iowa State playing West Virginia a nothing bowl then? We should turn the other cheek live not contesting the opinion of those merely pointing out our backward pace here in the boring cornfields? Are we re-acting in kind or overreacting to being called "the Worst?" If some writer wants to be taken seriously then be concerned when we take it seriously, what am I missing. My reaction was not too great, but I respect those questioning the writing and resenting the words. What was the writer's intent? Why didn't he list the best top few and let it at that. There is something in that piece that deserves our attention. Extreme reaction is uncalled for but, we can make our opinion on this known especially as noted this writer has spent little time here.

Bobby needs to venture outside of Ames. Iowa State fans look like a bunch of choir boys compared to the fans on the East Coast.

Terrible article. Shame on you Bobby. Shame on you. Cyclone fans defending themselves to national sports columists that have never even set foot in Ames is admirable. No fan base in America is more resiliant and shows up more for the number than Cyclone fans. We are America's best! Shame on you Bobby. Shame on you.

I think there is a large portion of the Iowa State fanbase that is passionate, knowledgeable, realistic, loyal and positive.

The problem is there is also a large portion that is whiny, juvenile, paranoid and thinks everybody is out to get us. Those people need to get a life

Yep, and it gets old.

To an extent, but im sick of people ******** on Iowa State and Ames when they have never set foot in Ames

I agree with this comment.

I think La Gesse is right about the fan rushing up to Bill Self and the horrid racial comments about Elijah Johnson. (I don't really blame fans for throwing stuff at Johnson or booing him though. That was a major B.S. move.) But the Pat Forde article was total amateur--I guarantee that he has never been to Ames--and I've seen no comments from ISU fans that I don't totally agree with. When so called journalists pull this bush-league crap based on nothing but their ignorance, ISU fans absolutely have to call them out on it. That doesn't mean that we aren't nice to decent fans from other schools--we certainly will be that. You don't have to allow yourself to get bullied all of the time to be nice. You can be nice AND stick up for yourself against B.S.

So lemme get this straight; while covering the Big 12, Ubben neglected to come to Ames for a Friday night game in which the #2 team in the nation (a conference team on his beat) was playing in and that's NOT doing a ****ty job? All I ever said about Ubben (apart from the hobbit jokes) is that he did a ****ty job covering the Big 12 Conference. I stand by that statement. He wasn't good and now he's out.

I just made a Twitter so I can let Ubben, Forde, and Le Gesse get a piece of my uncensored mind. Shameless endorsement: follow me @letscyber.

I'm guessing that isn't much of his call to make. There were at least two other matchups of ranked teams the next day.

Send my reporter to Ames, Iowa:
Good: #2 team in the BCS
Bad: Two small fanbases that don't drive the ratings bus
Two ranked matchups of Big 12 teams Saturday
High probability of a blowout

That's an easy decision to make as a business manager...we were the one time out of ten they make a bad call.

Clearly, ESPN thought Ubben (and Forde) were doing a bang up job. Nothing says journalism like ignorance and "you suck" statements.

Isn't he calling out ISU for acting like how every other fanbase acts/
Yes. And our fans sat on their hands in past days. Now that we are finally getting competitive, we have every right to point out stinko refereeing. Reminds me of the political parties where people lament where the middle has gone. Well, it is mostly gone. We are now hear to totally support the Cyclones unlike some stick in the mud. For the record, Forde forgot how bad Waco was. And why didn't Ubben visit?

The Forde thing had me wondering what about his cool slide show was journalism is any way. What's with "worst of" lists anyway? How about talking about you know, football?

Bobby is right IMO. The whiny segment of the fanbase could dial it back a little, whether it's a deserved slight or not.

I don't totally disagree with Bobby, but you're right that every offseason, it is open season on Ames, ISU, uniforms, facilities, mascot, etc. Honestly, it's just boring offseason articles that they spew out to generate talk because there's nothing real to talk about. And ISU is an easy target because our fans are very loyal and very defensive. Every year, it's the same thing. Here come the articles about the worst uniforms, worst cities, worst stadiums. No one is polling players about the best, it's almost always the worst. We just need the games to start, but expect the same next offseason.

Hey I was with you until you started attacking the middle. I may be moderate when it comes to politics but when it comes to sports there is the cyclone way and the wrong way ;)

I wouldn't have given a crap about Forde if he had offered ANY justification. Or, if he would have left out the pot-shot about our "rivalry" with WVU.

And with Ubben, maybe the Oklahoma St game wasn't the right call... but at some point, our rivalry with Iowa (or the Tulsa game last year) had to be close enough to the "top" game of the week to get him to a school he hadn't visited at all during his time covering that school.

I don't regret anything I did after the KU game, but I wasn't throwing things, charging Self, or tweeting racist stuff. That stuff was over the line.

Above all, I'm a proud cyclone. I'm proud of ISU, of Ames, and everything that comes with it. I'll defend it from unwarranted attacks and screwjobs every time I see one. If Bobby thinks it's bad to do that, so be it, I'm not going to apologize for it.

I think La Gesse spends too much time on CF. I know for a fact that he's reading this right now. CF is not the barometer of the Cyclone fanbase. CF is great, but if you can't filter through the noise, you end up writing and believing articles like his. His audience is a group of CF users, not the Cyclone fanbase as a whole, which the article is written to. That guy over at the gazette who writes articles about ISU are much better. I've noticed Bobby (yes I'm still talking to you) takes probably unnecessary pot shots every once in a while, which although not unheard of, I find odd for a small local newspaper in the city where the University resides.
