All-Century Team

I'm only a high schooler so I don't know a lot of the older guys but I voted for Stinson, Sullivan, Cato, Hornacek, Willoughby, Alexander and one of my favorite cyclones MICHAEL NURSE. I know he wasn't the greatest players but he was a key part of that elite eight team. I remember going to the first two rounds at Minneapolis and the team was sitting together watching the UCLA game. I was getting autographs and got Hawkins and some others who didn't play much. Horton was the next one to sign and then Tinsley but they had to leave for practice. I was walking back to my seat and Nurse was walking down the stairs and asked me if I wanted his autograph. I said yes of course and loved watching him that year and wished he would've been a junior.
Hornacek should be an automatic, no matter the criteria, in my opinion. Willoughby has to be right up there in votes too. So many great choices, not to mention some memories of awesome games played! The wife mentioned Thigpens' last second shot at Minnesota after the scoreboard pass. What a hoot!
Actually if you go by the criteria set forth Sam Mack should be included, he played in the NBA. The player not getting any mention in this forum that I can not believe did not apparently score 1000 points as a 4 year starter is Gary Thompkins. He came in with Grayer and both started all 4 years, he played the point allowing Hornacek to move to the off guard. The Big 8 was loaded in the years that Grayer was here so being 1st team All Conf was tough to achieve maybe tougher than other era's.
Exactly right, people on here voting for him are voting with their heart and not their brains. Terrible defender, could not create his own shot, and often struggled in Big 12 play. I like Jake, but he is remembered a lot more fondly because of the way he looks than the actual quality of his play. Michael Nurse was a MUCH better player than Jake Sullivan, and he might not even make the all century cut.
I agree. I was at the game in Columbia, MO the night that Larry had the infamous photos snapped and I'm still maintaining that Sullivan drove him to it! We had a six point lead with two minutes to play and ended up with a four point loss. Jake took a couple of ill-advised shots during that ten point swing and I thought Eustachy was going to blow...
I've been watching Cyclone basketball since 1979 and Sullivan wouldn't be in my top ten quarter-century team...
Mine were Hornacek, Ron Harris, Barry Stevens, Kelvin Cato, Big Vic, Bill Cain and my write in was Ron Virgil. I just really liked that kid.....had a goofy shot and looked a little bit like the ant from the Pink Panther cartoons, but he made some big plays.
Sullivan deserves some consideration because he did shoot the three better than anyone else ever has at ISU and cracked the top ten in total points. He did have some flaws but I think an argument could be made for him.
On my list I had a lot of the usual suspects that have already been mentioned. My original list had 14 and I started cutting guys from there and honestly I kind of forgot everybody that ended up on my final ballot. I tried to give bonus points to first-team all-conference selections since that is a decent way to compare eras.
The one guy I had that hasn't been mentioned much is Stinson but he put himself up fairly high in a lot of all-time lists even with only playing three years.

I had Vince Brewer (fond memories), Bill Cain, Jeff Hornacek, Barry Stevens, Ron Harris, Robert Estes (personal favorite), and Dedric Willoughby.
Close to write-ins were Ron Virgil and Dave Collins. I remember seeing Dave Collins block a dunk attempt by Clifford Ray (6-2 vs 6-9) in the Armory one night. Good times.

as long as nobody votes for Paul Shirley, I'll be happy. He said in one of his blogs that he could care less about Iowa State...I almost want his playing time stricken from the record books for that comment!

Being in the younger crowd of ISU fans (21), Thigpen was the first Cyclone I remember seeing in person. He really got me started on ISU basketball. I met Michalik a couple times, and he is simply a grade A human being to go along with being a great player and superb teammate (not to mention a successful coach overseas).

He's very loyal to Larry Eustachy and feels like his firing was unforgivable. I don't think he is anywhere close to good enough compared to the others on the list anyway.
