Would there really be that much of a difference between playing JUCO and then ending up at a place like Toledo or Middle Tennessee for one year than playing at UNI for two years? I'm not trying to be a smartass. I completely understand that playing FBS would be better than playing FCS, but if it were me, I would want the ability to play the most. Not only that, but UNI has a pretty solid schedule these next two years that would give him an opportunity to play on a national level. Being a Panther, I would love to see him in the Purple and Gold!
No one at UNI really see's Derby coming here. Not saying that we wouldn't welcome him, but we haven't heard anything about him being interested like we have about Keeston Terry.

He was a RS freshman this year so he'll have 3 years of eligibility left (assuming he doesn't transfer directly to a BCS program). I would be shocked if he doesn't try to get to a BCS program after playing one year at a lower level, whether it's FCS or Juco.
Also, I'm not sure on the rules when a player transfers to a BCS program from a FCS program. I know they don't have to sit out a year going the other way but not sure on this one.
Not at all. That's a very real possibility, and I would say that 2 years at UNI > 1 year JUCO, 1 year mid-major. But I'm guessing his thinking would be "play one year of JUCO, and have a crack at a BCS level spot".
I hate to sound condescending, because I know you're a true Panther, but him playing at UNI would just totally fit into the stereotype-that-exists-for-a-reason of UNI people being Hawkeye fans that couldn't cut it in Iowa City, and now live for taking shots at ISU.

I have these nightmares of AJ Derby playing QB for UNI, and coming out on fire against Iowa State, dreaming of no bigger accomplishment than slaying ISU, and in turn making me lose my mind and either squirming for 4 quarters or melting down into a blubbering pile of rage.
(My fiance is a UNI alum and former Panther athlete, so I HATE it when ISU loses to UNI)
Who can't cut it in IC? It's not exactly a giant metropolis and neither is it the Harvard of the midwest.
Kinda odd that I rushed the field as a UNI student at JTS (we had field level seats, we were practically already there) but then yelled myself voiceless these past few years for ISU to win. I'll probably still pull for ISU in this one just because I want to see them continue to improve.
Side note, are you and your lady going to the Wisconsin game next year? Grant and I are trying to make it to a new stadium every year from now on and figured this one would be a fantastic one to go to since my whole family except him are Panther alums. Were also hoping to make an ND game next year, but thats another story.
If ISU had stuck to the Thursday game for Tulsa, we'd be going to Camp Randall. She might go anyway. However, my cousin (who is a HUGE Cyclone) went to Tulsa for law school, still lives there, and a bunch of his buddies (who I know pretty well) are coming up for the game, so I'll be in Ames. I'm really ****** about the whole situation, as Camp Randall is one of my bucket list stadiums, and this was a great opportunity to go. I can't really justify it under the cirumstances.
I haven't looked to see when the Iowa/UNI game is, but it wouldn't shock me if we head to IC assuming its not an ISU home weekend. We went in 2009 and it was a blast rooting on the Panthers.

I was referring to the litany of die-hard Iowa fans in my neck of the woods who went to UNI not because they felt a strong connection to the UNI campus/community, or were looking to become teachers/accountants, but because they were afraid to get too far from home. These were the same people that give UNI a reputation as a "suitcase" college. They would go home every weekend to nail their 15 year old girlfriend, or maybe go to an Iowa game here and there.
In the realm of good-natured trash talking, ISU alums assume that all UNI students fall into this model, just like I assume you think we're all a bunch of hicks with this unjustified arrogance about their choice of college. :yes:
Ha, that's pretty funny. My wife is almost a "suitcase" UNI grad. But she actually went there for the education program. However, she spent most weekends at Iowa with me and I spent very few weekends at UNI. Why? Because a TON of her friends went home every damn weekend. Luckily her cousins went to UNI as well and were actually cool, so we partied with them. But you speak the truth in a lot of cases, that is for sure.

I've spent a lot of time in Cedar Falls, Iowa City, and Ames and I enjoyed all three places. Every time I've went to Ames for an ISU-Iowa game, the Clones won. I'm like the kiss of death for the Hawkeyes in Ames. Therefore, I'm no longer allowed back in Ames during that weekend.:smile: Even with the losses, I always had a good time.
I like Cedar Falls quit a bit too. I had some buddies from back home who went there and actually stuck around on the weekends. They didn't really hang much with the kids from our hometown that went back every weekend, and I've been up there a few times to party with them. Went there a few times when I was first dating my now fiance, as she was in her last semester there. Always enjoyed it. Hell, I even watched the 2009 Insight Bowl at Beck's on the Hill.

Not the decision to transfer though, the decision to go to Iowa in the first place if he had his heart set on playing QB. Did he think Iowa was going to all of a sudden start running the Urban Meyer/Tim Tebow offense? Or even run the OU Belldozer offense?
I also blame the Hawk coaching staff for not being honest with him in the first place. I doubt they ever really thought he had a chance as a QB but figured if they brought him in and let him redshirt on the QB depth chart that they could move him wherever they wanted later. But I'm sure they made every promise that he would get his shot to play QB.

Hmm. Every one of those schools outside of Bama and Wisky have used running QBs heavily in recent years.
Exactly, and if he had gotten assurances from one of those schools that he would get a shot to play QB there, they might have actually meant it. Instead, he went to Iowa where they tried to make him a drop back passer like Stanzi. Teams with running QBs know how to develop them and use their dual threat capabilities with the best results. Sure, it may have turned out that he wasn't a good enough QB to make it at any of those schools, but he probably would have had a better shot with different QB coaching.
Now he has to go to a JuCo and hope that he can develop enough next year to get a shot playing QB at FBS.
It seems like a lot of big time recruits are making dumb decisions lately. They get blinded by coaches telling them what they want to hear and have this idea that they will come in and the coach will just hand them a starting spot. When that doesn't happen, they have to transfer and hope they land on their feet.
It's the worst at the championship level schools. When I see two 4 star QBs commit to the same school in the same year it makes me wonder what the eff they are thinking. I know athletes are cocky enough to believe they can beat out anybody, but you have to be realistic about what you are getting yourself into.
How many of those offered him as a quarterback? You say Kirk Ferentz lied to him, I fail to see how he did that. He told him he would be given the opportunity to play quarterback, he was given that opportunity and was going to get beat out by a younger player. You expect a recruit to expect that he's going to fail?
Also, you bring up KSU, but you do so knowing what you know now. KSU wasn't very good in 2009 and was trending downward (it might have been the year they fired their coach even). With Derby signing in February of 2010 that makes a pretty big difference.
There was actually a solid purple section in one corner (we were sitting in the Iowa student section; ill-advised).
I assume they were bored Cyclone fans.
