What is going on in IC when a guy who was born and raised a Hawk leaves? Hell he has a brother on the team still. This would be like Matt Gatens leaving Iowa

Great athlete. I wonder where he goes and for what position.

My guess is he wants to be a QB somewhere, and that was not going to happen at Iowa.

My guess as well. I think he'd make a heck of a linebacker but you can't force a kid to do it.

Just his wording of his statement makes it look like a depth chart issue.

The word in Iowa City was that he was less than thrilled with the move to LB, and wants to transfer to play QB. I would be shocked if he transfers somewhere, and doesn't play QB. I didn't realize he was less than thrilled to the point he would transfer though. Clones85 was right on that this would be like Gatens leaving the bball team. With Derby's size and athleticism he could have made a hell of a LB. I guess the NFL is not his ultimate goal, which is fine, but still...wow.

If he didn't want to be moved to LB why didn't he say that when they moved him mid season? FYI I think moving a kid mid season is a little dumb. Especially when that person is the backup QB.

I think the Hawk coaches where looking for any excuse for him not to play at the QB position. Any excuse at all. Than Derby gets in trouble with the law, even though it seemed minor, and the next thing you know he is a LB. I'm sure Derby didn't feel the coaches really believed in him at that point and that a move to another school may be best for him.

Regardless that is an Iowa family. Shocked he would transfer

Not getting PT is frustrating for any kid, even a kid that is loyal to a school. Best of luck to him and I hope he gets his shot at QB somewhere.

So where do Hawk fans think he ends up? Does he go the UNI, FCS route? Or is he still trying to be a D-1 QB.

Wasn't UNI's QB a senior this year? His athletism would fit in well there. I know it's not FBS or BCS, but UNI should be a big enough program to get him recognition.

If true, might be a good fit. I just don't know how good of a QB he is, but he is surely an athlete.

Doubt it on the D1. Leaves him 2 years to win a spot and start. Might only start for 1 year if that is the case. FCS is my guess and would be his best chance at starting.

Plenty of FCS quarterbacks have made the jump to the NFL so it's not like it's impossible to do. UNI might be a good choice. In all honesty, ISU wouldn't be a bad choice either but I'm not sure they need another quarterback.

He's not transferring to a Big 10 school because he'd have to sit out 2 years. What does Kansas State's quarterback situation look like after Kline leaves?

Saw that his dad played at Iowa about the same time Bret Bielema did. Although I would think his release is conditioned where he cant transfer to a big 10 school, and probably ISU as well, my guess is he goes over to UNI.

It wouldn't even have to be a condition of his release. If you transfer from one B10 school to another you have to sit out two years. So that would mean he'd sit out two for the chance to play one.

This is probably going to be a really dumb move for this kid. Not leaving IC, that's a good move by all accounts, but not agreeing to play LB.

I'm not sure he's good enough to play QB at the BCS college level, but I think he could end up in the NFL someday as a LB.

He would make a perfect UNI Panther on so many levels.

Al, completely OT here, and just for fun for some good natured **** talking, but did I read on HN (some guy copied a post you made on here I guess) that you think ISU's o-line will be better than Iowa's this coming season??

I agree that Derby would be an ideal Panther. I still can't believe that he of all people is transferring.
