A few tips for those going to Vegas

They also go for the food, shopping and shows. They just won't admit it.

One of the ladies I work with out there claims to have never gone to the strip and that Hanks is the only good restauarant in town (it's at GVR). Yet I've heard her say the only good mall is the fashion show mall; hint it's on the strip. She also goes to the Canyon Spa; at the Venetian, on the strip...

The companies marketing person told me she has never gone to the strip. Then later tells me she can't believe I haven't gone to yada yada shows and proceeds to list 4 or 5 shows... on the strip. Also mentioned Emerils Fish House as her favorite restauarant.

Another guy that hates the strip always asks what hotel I'm staying at. Always wants a full review. If it's good he say that he will stay there for a weekend when its cheap.

It's a running joke with the group of people I work with out there about how locals don't go to the strip...

And anyone going to the colorado game stay off the mountains. you can get the same experience on a treadmill with incline and a climbing wall. And you don't have to deal with the weather. And if you are going to Florida for vacation stay off the beach, you can swim in the pools without worrying about the sand.

..oh, by all means go to the strip, see the shows, et al....what I mean is stay off the strip in one of the local casino hotels....usually they have bowling alleys, movie theaters, and much better gaming overall. Of course you should go to the strip as well, have fun there, but I'm just saying you pay a premium for rooms and everything else there....yet, you could stay at the Orleans, for instance, and take their bus (5 minutes away from strip) to the strip, and come back for everything that's fun (gambling, movies, bowling, drinking, clubbing --most local places have clubs too--, even shows and the Orleans actually is the home to a minor league hockey team when in season)....hey but what do I know, I'm a local, maybe you'll enjoy yourself staying on the strip :eek:

of course we go there for the shows, some restaurants, and for work....but the first local that you can find that gambles on the strip, would be a guy that just moved to town and doesn't realize its a ripoff.

In most local casinos you'll find video poker that pays out over 100% on optimal play (meaning you have to play your hand right), and the strip's casinos will be 95% payout on optimal play.....locals never play the strip casinos except for poker tournaments, or maybe casinos like the Sahara or Barbary Coast that have lower limit tables, and better games than just blackjack.

Locals avoid the strip, if at all possible, just like Southern Californians avoid Disneyland....sure the SoCals all go to Disneyland, but they prefer not to.

Honestly, the last time I saw the show was before the females took over....years ago.
 
Another thing to mention...Northwest of town, the Paiute indian tribe has three Pete Dye designed golf courses.....all over town are some very good golf courses, just not as cheap as Iowa. My brothers went to Creighton, and when they graduated, we went to the ceremony and before heading back home to Vegas we crossed the river one of the days and golfed in Iowa. A really nice course (can't remember the name of it though), and played it for $18, 18 holes and a cart....I was floored. That would be $50 at a muni course in Vegas (of course it costs the courses millions to just water the course throughout the year here).

The Pete Dye courses are worth what you spend. They were a client of mine when I worked at Deloitte & Touche, and of course, the tribe couldn't really make money off of gaming, so they sell cigarettes on their 13 acres in downtown vegas, and then have 3 golf courses on their 400 acres outside of Vegas.... rebelx - I am going with a group of guys this weekend and I was wondering if you had any tips on the best way(s) to get to and from the game from the strip. Thanks in advance.
 
I'm not renting a car. I would think that there would be massive lines for people waiting to get a taxi after the game. Are there? Or can you typically get a taxi fairly easy after the game?

I was just going to post the same question-does the city have bus service to and from? Cabs would be fine to get there, but I'm a bit concerned about finding one to get back, it appears to be in a desolate location.

I remember someone saying in a thread earlier that a shuttle runs between the MGM and Sam Boyd Stadium. Can anyone confirm this, again?

I have been told from Badger fans that went to the game out there last year that it was almost impossible to get a cab out to the stadium after the game. We set up a stuttle bus to take us out there and back to the hotel after the game. ended up being $25 per person.
 
I hesitate to post this, considering the audience (your location in the U.S. probably means you know great beef...hold the jokes); but you all need to check out the Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay (actually its in the boutique shops that are between Mandalay Bay and the Luxor...but its all under one roof). You'll really like this place provided you aren't a vegetarian (do you even have those out there?).....

For $18 you probably played Dodge Park, a municipal course. It's right across the river, I played it regularly in high school. It wasn't very nice back then but with the casinos moving in right next door, I'm guessing they probably made improvements.

We are staying at the South Point Casino. Any thoughts on the place? We picked it because it was off the strip (it's a family trip), a four star, and a bargain.

Ive only really stepped into South Point once, I was severely hungover from the night before and my friend that lives near there, had to cash in a huge parlay ticket. It didnt look too bad. I know its not a lot of help, but I would certainly stay there. Not too far from the strip, at least it didnt seem like it.

I havent been to too many other steakhouses out in Vegas, but my favorite is Austin's at Texas Station. Not sure how it compares to other steak houses since that the only one weve been to since we love it so much. Though it is a trek if you dont have a rental car.

I've eaten at the Burger Bar numerous times.
It is frickin' awesome!

South Point is good for exactly the reasons you stated. Good for families. I think you'll be pleased.
