A Crane has arrived!!

I think they should leave the scoreboard where it is right now. How awesome would that be for Shontrelle to be running directly at himself if we position a camera man in the endzone haha

That would make for some pretty dis-orienting field goals as well!

East tower will go up on Monday or Tuesday. Two cranes for the big lift on Wednesday. They will work in parallel to get it in. These are professionals and they know how to erect steel. Lift will be done very early, most likely starting at sunrise.

Love the armchair engineering on this forum.
I knew it, we are cheating! CPR is going out and hiring "professionals" for our new juco QB. No wonder he came to ISU.

Thanks for that Justin. Btw, how's all the rain treating you with the bridge work? It's killing our schedule right now...soils are drying up the last couple days for work to continue but then well get smoked this weekend with rain and it'll be middle to end next week before we can get back at it!

Things have been a struggle at times. Not only is the dirt wet but rivers are up too. We have been over on the Missouri helping build dikes as well. Crazy weather year so far.

could someone post a picture of the progress? I can't seem to load the image. I had heard that they were hoisting the video board up on wednesday morning at 5 am but i haven't been able to view anything all week!

Just stopped by the Jake and took a look at this thing. They have the decal on the backside about 1/2 done. It's gonna look good! Big I-State logo with a "Jack Trice Stadium" underneath it.

Any pics of the back? I just hope they don't plaster that same logo on each side of the scoreboard to cover the black speaker screen like they have in the "renderings". 3 times on one object is way too much.

Once on the back and twice on the front would be way too much? You wouldn't see all three at the same time. Better than having large empty black spaces. It is our logo afterall.

I disagree. The most you will see at any one time will be 2. Besides, the more visibility our current logo gets, the better.

If and when they enclose the south endzone, are they going to move the existing south end zone structure to the north end zone? Looks like there is quite a bit of space between the goal posts and the building.

There are bleachers already in front of the Jake during the season. The band sits in them. Plus the current south endzone seats are to big to be put in front of the Jake.

Yes, I understand why you may think this, however look at it this way:

1. The "I-State Jack Trice Stadium" is not our primary logo, just a variation of it that should be used in moderation (not that I really even like the variation because of the odd font mutations/sizes, but that is just my design opinion so I'll leave that out). I actually wouldn't have felt the need to say anything if there were two "I-State" logos on each side (still hoping that is the case).

2. You guys aren't seeing the potential of what a really nice graphic could do for that giant board. Imagine a dark cardinal colored screen with subtle ISU graphics (maybe a central campus landscape theme?) that merges in with the videoboard design when It is on and operating, making it look like one horizontal piece during gameday. It would emphasize the horizontal and make it appear larger, enhancing the environment sort of like a ribbon board (which it would go well with if we decided to install those around the upper deck). Worried about sun fade (not like the black isn't going to fade worse though, right)?...make it shades of gray.

The closest example of this that comes to mind is Oregon's stadium and the way their graphics around the bowl appear to be one large landscape graphic. I could be wrong about this example though, thinking of it only from memory.

Also, I don't have any idea what material they are using, what the logo is made out of, and how it is applied. Those factors could have had an impact on how much could be done with the speaker coverings.

The back side of the board looks like the same material that they used on the back of the concessions/restroom buildings...looks almost like a gray siding. The logo on the back is a BIG I-State with a smaller "Jack Trice Stadium" underneath. That is a decal...I'm betting the same kind of thing that they used on the back of the old scoreboard. Looks really sharp! No idea what they'll do with the speaker coverings. The first renderings had the I-State with JTS underneath over each side, but a later rendering just had the I-State logos. I'm fine with either. I'll say that view of the video board from the parking lots is going to look great. Also, noticed that they coated about 1/3 of the lots between JTS and Hilton (middle third). No parking stalls yet, but I'm sure that is coming.

Stopped by the stadium today while I was in Ames to pick up a poster/magnet etc from the Jac (Jake? never know how to spell that when not full name). They were putting the I State decal on the back of the board.

The size of this thing is really not done justice by the photos that have been posted or the webcam. Having been able to see it in person it appears like the bottom of the board once it is mounted will be about level with the bottom of the upper decks and nearly as high. This thing is going to do a lot to give the North end of the stadium a closed in feel in addition to the obvious upgrade to the audio and video we have at the stadium. I was skeptical when I heard Arnaud say this thing could be worth 2-3 recruits a year on the podcast with Chris. I now totally agree with his assessment. Jack Trice now has something that provides a wow factor that was missing. Before it was just a nice average stadium. Nothing that jumped out as awesome or exceptional. This videoboard has the potential to change that. We may not have topped A&M or Texas, but this will make the whole stadium feel much more big time than it has up until this point.

Yeah, I don't think that people get the full grasp of how big this thing is from the pics or webcam. There are bigger ones out there for sure, but IMO the upgrade to the atmosphere in the stadium is going to be huge. I think that they're getting a lot of bang for their buck here. Big time improvement.
