MLB: ***2024 Minnesota Twins***

Glad to have Correa back, but sending your hottest hitter back to Triple A is really stupid. Lewis can at least hit DH, or play part time at short, third, or LF. Feel bad for Royce.
Twins obviously think it's more important he gets reps everyday at AAA short.
It will be really interesting to see this play out. It’s fun knowing you have that ace to play in your pocket but I agree that this seems weird. They must worry about him taking ABs away from others at DH. Will be interesting to see what they do later in the year in the September nutcutting time if they are still in contention.

Also, according to Aaron Gleeman there is absolutely no chance the FO opens up their wallets and sign Correa on an extension. Royce showing he’s likely ready seems to cement that if it wasn’t already.

Agree. Miranda should be going back to St. Paul instead. Looks completely overmatched at the plate.

Its entirely possible they want to give Royce a week or 2 at 3B before they bring him back up to fill that spot.

Honestly with Royce showing he is ready, I could see the FO look at trade options for Correa. I'd rather keep Correa at short stop and see Royce play 1B or corner outfield though

I'm sure that Gleeman would have also said there is absolutely no chance the FO signs Correa for $35M a year. I doubt they get a long term extension, but you never know.

I do think there is a pretty good chance he opts in for next year. If he leaves the Twins in 2024 instead of 2023, he will get a higher salary, so he may bet on himself and wait a year or 2 to go back to free agency. Even if he waits until 2025, he'd still only be 30 years old and probably still able to get a massive contract.

Alternatively, there was a reason he signed with the Twins. No team wanted to pay him that much money for 5-10 years. If that doesn't change, he might just stick around.

Just look at how free agent contracts have grown.

In 2017, the top free agents got 20-23M a year. (JD Martinez, Carlos Santana)
In 2018, the top free agents got 25-30M a year. (Machado, Harper)
In 2019, the top free agent got $35M a year. (Rendon)
In 2020, the top free agent got $25M, but it was George Springer, there weren't really any crazy good free agents.
In 2021, the top free agents got 30-35M (Correa, Seager)

Its entirely possible that if Correa has 2-3 MVP caliber seasons in Minnesota, he could sign a 7-10 year contract for 40-45M a year.

Totally depends on if they are in the race. If they are, they can't trade Correa. If not, trade him.

3B is more likely for Royce, since he's actually played there some.

Urshela has had a good year so far and is better defensively at 3B than Royce would be. I honestly think Royce would be a good corner outfielder, and I know the coaching staff thinks Kirilloff can be a great defensive 1B

Urshela has been pretty terrible, but should improve. His OPS+ is 83, so he's been way below average so far this year. .226 Batting Average, .280 OBP and .330 slugging would not quality as a "good year so far". I think he started hot and has been god-awful since (.676 OPS in April, .517 OPS in May). If you take away his first 3 games of the season, he has has a .221/.275/.305 line.

Urshela is probably better at defense, but we don't really know how good Lewis could be there, so its hard to say.

I think for now, 3B makes the most sense, because Lewis at least has some experience there. OF also makes sense, but when Larnach gets back, you've got Larnach/Buxton/Kepler with Celestino doing fine as Buxton's rest guy. 1B would also be useful if Urshela improves, but for now, I'd rather have Royce at 3B and Arraez at 1B. I'm sure Royce's 3B defense would be better than Arraez.

You might also use Royce as a super utility guy, but if you do that, you might want him to get reps at 3B, 1B and OF in AA over the next couple of weeks.

I agree. But several hundred million is different than 35 million.

I think Royce would even be a defensive upgrade at first base over Miranda despite never playing there professionally. Haven’t been impressed with Miranda at the plate or in the field.

I wonder what the deal is with Miranda. He definitely looks out of sorts right now.

Oh, I'm not suggesting Miranda stay up at all, but 1B is a good spot for Arraez who needs to be in the lineup daily, or Kiriloff if he figures things out. I'm afraid Kiriloff won't recover though.

He was never a top prospect until last year, so its not like he has elite talent. I'm guessing his first taste of the big leagues is just hitting him really hard. He'll go back down to AAA and know what he needs to work on and hopefully turn things around. I am surprised he didn't go down instead of Lewis, but I'm guessing they sent Royce down to get him reps around the diamond and probably his last ever visit to the minors.

I hope Miranda kind of like Dozier. Dozier was an 8th round pick, so not super talented and his first taste of the Big Leagues at age 24 was brutal. Over his first 84 games, his OPS+ was 67 but he improved a lot in the last month of the season and was near league average in year 2.

Now Miranda's first 13 games might be the worst start of any player ever, though. Its brutal. But, he's not striking about a ton (just below league average) and his BABIP is .100, which is insanely ugly. His Hard Hit % is low, and he hits a few too many GB, but its not like he's been pull heavy or opposite field heavy. He's almost perfectly balanced. He actually has a lower strikeout rate and a higher Average Exit Velocity than Celestino, who has a BABIP of .450.

Arraez sucks against lefty pitchers. Kiriloff went yard last night at St Paul, so hopefully he is coming around. I hope that Miranda is just having typical rookies struggles.

Sure, but Arraez needs to be in the lineup daily against RHP which is most of the time.

If Kiriloff has figured it out, the Twins are in fantastic shape.

Royce played OF a couple of years ago in the fall league. If they are comfortable putting Gordon out there now, why not Royce?
Keeping Miranda and Gordon on the big league team while sending down Lewis doesn't make competitive sense. Another bad decision by Falvey.

Lewis in the OF is just fine, but you have Buxton, Kepler and Larnach and Kiriloff if they get healthy. 3B makes sense in that it would be a bigger upgrade right now.

It would be a shame if Lewis is back in the minors more than 1-2 weeks, though.
