It will be really interesting to see this play out. It’s fun knowing you have that ace to play in your pocket but I agree that this seems weird. They must worry about him taking ABs away from others at DH. Will be interesting to see what they do later in the year in the September nutcutting time if they are still in contention.
Also, according to Aaron Gleeman there is absolutely no chance the FO opens up their wallets and sign Correa on an extension. Royce showing he’s likely ready seems to cement that if it wasn’t already.
I'm sure that Gleeman would have also said there is absolutely no chance the FO signs Correa for $35M a year. I doubt they get a long term extension, but you never know.
I do think there is a pretty good chance he opts in for next year. If he leaves the Twins in 2024 instead of 2023, he will get a higher salary, so he may bet on himself and wait a year or 2 to go back to free agency. Even if he waits until 2025, he'd still only be 30 years old and probably still able to get a massive contract.
Alternatively, there was a reason he signed with the Twins. No team wanted to pay him that much money for 5-10 years. If that doesn't change, he might just stick around.
Just look at how free agent contracts have grown.
In 2017, the top free agents got 20-23M a year. (JD Martinez, Carlos Santana)
In 2018, the top free agents got 25-30M a year. (Machado, Harper)
In 2019, the top free agent got $35M a year. (Rendon)
In 2020, the top free agent got $25M, but it was George Springer, there weren't really any crazy good free agents.
In 2021, the top free agents got 30-35M (Correa, Seager)
Its entirely possible that if Correa has 2-3 MVP caliber seasons in Minnesota, he could sign a 7-10 year contract for 40-45M a year.
