***2023 PGA Tour Thread***

That would absolutely blow. All the tradition and history, gone. Poof.

What history? You mean PRE- Saudi rule of the game history? Maybe an asterisk will be needed?

I'd just like to know the real reason the PGA caved? Were they afraid of what would be uncovered about them in the lawsuit? Or, like is being said on Golf Channel quite a bit, they know they can't afford a really long drawn out and expensive court battle with the Saudi's? It has to be one of those, right?

I am so confused by all of this. PIF mergers with the PGA Tour and agrees to provide financing for the Tour. They agree to form a new, for-profit entity. LIV is not technically involved in that merger but is going to continue to operate as a stand-alone entity. But is PIF still funding LIV? I just can't make it all jive in my head.

PIF created LIV so they could get to this point. The ultimate goal was to take control of the PGA Tour which has now happened. They never cared about making another sports league. They justed wanted to buy the existing league. PIF now controls all of men's golf.

Bingo

If the merger gets denied by the DOJ or some other entity, is there anything stopping the PIF from de-funding the LIV and redirecting its funds to the PGA? Assuming there is some language in the contracts the golfers signed that PIF would have to pay out, but I still find it difficult to see the PIF caring much about the LIV now that it can control the PGA

Good point, and why would they continue to shell out huge paydays for the LIV tour, trying to draw golfers out of their own league?

I don't anticipate LIV being around in 2024, at least, not in its current form. If it continues to exist, it won't be directly competing with the PGA Tour anymore.

That's what I can't figure out. Rory was very clear that this was a merger with PIF and not LIV. I know him and Jimmy Dunne are close so I'd imagine that's a correct line of thinking. But then you have Norman talking about LIV continuing to operate, and the quotes about existing players getting offers. So if PIF funding both?

Norman was used by PIF so they could acquire the PGA Tour. He's a patsy.

The simplest line of thinking would be to assume that Norman is just talking out of his ass.

I can't imagine that LIV lives through this as its own entity. They're not going to fund all sorts of big contracts for their sideshow tour to attract talent away from the main stage. I'm guessing when it all washes out, they'll incorporate some of the LIV ideas and new venues, and then it will be gone.

I can see them branding the team events they want to continue as 'The LIV Series' or something like that but LIV as an organization is dead after this season.

Also, Monahan talking about the process for those guys getting back on tour being rigorous is the most roll your eyes part of this whole thing and that's saying something.

Is it hard for people to understand because it sounds like a far flung worst case scenario?

Casual golf fan but massive NBA fan, the shady NBA stuff re: China seems quaint compared to all this.
