2023 CyHawk

I told this to my friend I was at the game with, but Iowa does an insanely good job at getting to 3rd and manageable. I would say that’s a huge difference between Iowa and ISU right now. Felt like the Clones were always in 3rd and 6+ where Iowa had a lot of 3rd and 4 or less

I feel like a lot of the post game podcasts I've listened to have been impressed with Cade and think he was a big difference in the game this year. Now maybe he looked a little better than Petras but his stat line was not good and I was not all that impressed with him. I feel like this praise for him after this game is a little weird. Am I just totally off?

I thought it was crazy when Dejean was following Brahmers on the field in the second half. It appears he might be one of our best WR options by a lot. Hopefully, Higgins will become a 1 WR, so teams have to pick which one to put their best CB on.
Brahmer doesn't move like he's 250 lbs that's for sure. Very fluid

I thought he played well in opener but I was a little disappointed this past week. I need to see more to be 1 way or other all I can say is he's better than Petras but will have to see how much.

I guess I haven't seen that praise for him like you have, but if true then yes it isn't warranted. Cade missed on three really big throws that could have made the end of the game a lot less stressful. He overthrews a wide open Lachey that would have probably went for about 30 yards. Overthrew Anderson on what could have been a 90 plus yard TD. Then underthrew Vines who had three steps on the defender, but had to slow down for the ball. That could have been a big gain as well.

Luckily Iowa didn't need those passes this game, but they will against PSU. Hoping it was just a one game deal.

Ok thank you for confirming what I saw. I just feel like in all the Iowa Everywhere podcasts he is getting some praise when I saw really nothing from him to make me think he is that great of a QB. Better than Petras but like you said jury is out on how much better.

I'd agree with everything but I was encouraged with defensive line. I thought they blew a lot of runs up and hurried Becht as much as they could who was getting ball out quickly
Yeah good points, ISU definitely gets the ball out quickly. I was just surprised at how they were carving us up on the ground a bit during the early drives. Against ISU we had 5 TFLs and 2 of them were by DBs. Same with USU, we only had 4 TFLs and 2 of them were by DBs. I was just expecting them to be a little saltier than I've seen so far.

Feel like a lot of the Iowa Everywhere podcasts said positive things about him. His stat line was bad and like you said he missed some key throws. I didn't see anything in that performance that made me think Iowa could compete against the top of the Big10 with him as QB. Only one game against a good defense so not going to bury him I just wasn't impressed with him in the game Saturday.

I thought a big difference was our running game and Rocco not ever going mid distance. Last year JB would go straight forward and make a cut, we went horizontal too much. When we went forward, we gained yards. Dekkers threw a few deeper (not long but 15-20 yards) and that kept the safeties deeper.

Having our D leader out was a hit. There was 6 starters we didn’t have. It does hurt.

Teams like ISU and Iowa just can't take that kind of hit and expect to still be a good team. That is a huge blow to ISU. Iowa losing Shannon and Harris for these first two games hurts Iowa as well, just not to the same extent as what ISU lost. Glad we get Harris back and still hopeful Shannon gets a reduced suspension, but not holding my breath on that one.

Yeah, I’m not sure what Vaughns injury is. With mostly freshmen linebackers or second gear guys, that experienced one make a big difference. Remsburg is supposed to be back in 4 games. If this would have happened in December, then the coaches would have had a chance to at least back fill with JUCOs to help out but by the time it hit, they were pretty much picked over.

McNamara is a lot better than Petras, but that might be the lowest bar of all time. He is better than Rocco or Kohl currently though, and that was enough to beat us Saturday. Chris Hassel specifically mentioned loving his footwork on Saturday. I thought he was airmailing balls all day though. He missed on a couple big ones potentially. Our DBs looked a little overmatched at times once Tampa left the game midway thru the 3rd quarter. #31 for us, RS Freshman Jontez Williams, got roasted by Seth Anderson on what could/maybe should have been a 90+ yard TD and McNamara couldn't hit him. Maybe there's some rust or maybe he is playing a bit hurt, IDK. But he will absolutely have to be better to beat Penn State and whoever Iowa ends up playing in the Big 10 championship.

I didn't have many complaints about our defense on Saturday, given no Gerry Vaughn and Tampa getting hurt, but really think Heacock should have dialed up more pressure early and often. Needed to send a message like they did with Theo Day. Maybe they tried and Iowa's pass pro was just that good. Idk. Not going back to watch it again.

I'm guessing if they sub McNamara for Petras/Padilla last year it most likely flips the below into win column, but like you said it's McNamara instead of one of the worst passers I've seen start for an D1 team not McNamara upgrading a guy who belongs at that level.

Loss ISU 10, Iowa 7 (Petras 12/26, 0TD, 1 INT)
Loss Illinois 9, Iowa 6 (Petras 18/36, 0 TD, 1 INT)
Loss Nebraska 24, Iowa 17 (Petras 1/6 0 TD, 0 INT, Padilla 16/33 1 TD, 1 INT)

They'd have still lost to Michigan and probably still blown out by Ohio State.

This year it's just one top team. I think PSU might be slightly better than last year's PSU but not better than Michigan or Ohio State last year.

I don't think Iowa fans are wrong to blame Petras at all, but some of them don't realize Petras is Brian and Kirk, especially in this transfer era Petras is 100% Brian and Kirk.

Regarding the missed throw to Anderson, I think that was just a good play by Singleton(I think). He hit is arm as he was releasing it otherwise that's a touchdown.

TavernClark's still bi!ching about the officiating in a game where they had zero penalty yards against them.

It’s likely my bias here, but I didn’t think that was nearly as egregious as many are claiming. Looked like some hand fighting while both players were focused on the ball. How about Higgins getting his arm pulled down I. The end zone on ISU’s first drive. That no call turned out to be even more consequential.

1) What a baby. Crying about a missed call to the media on a game you won that ultimately ended up helping since the resulting possession was the pick 6 is not good. Fans doing that I get. Players doing that to each other or coaches I get. Heck even coaches to the media I get. But this is just unbelievably weak.

2) I've never seen a player for Kirk say anything like this to the media. It's honestly kind of shocking in that regard. I already have concerns about their offense, but this makes it seem like there could be some underlying issues that aren't typical with Iowa.
