2008 recruits better than expected?

I sure hope so... After reading some of the comments today, I just don't know some times...

2015 might be the key to the sarcasm. Jeremy said 2011 we would have a good team. That is only 3 years from now after Wesley is gone.

If things break our way and Miles does not get in the way, we should be doing fine by 2009-10.

I am so freaking tired of "the coach is wrong, we suck, if you like to be last you will be last your whole life, our system is not working" blah blah blah. Programs go through down years ITS LIFE. To keep up this negativity surrounding the program is not going to help with recruiting or the image of cyclone sports. If us as fans keep doing the crap like running coaches out of town our recruits are going to think twice about coming here. I mean hell, McCarney got the axe for a bad season here and there and now is getting rewarded for being a defensive coach at Florida and their program is happy to have him, boy he sucked huh? I think not. So going through coaches like we change our underwear is not the solution. This has been proven already as we are building in the right direction with the right coaching staffs in football and basketball. So if rebuilding is a huge problem for some fans, and you want success at the drop of a hat your negativity is NOT helping. There are other programs to root for and you can take your negativity elsewhere.

So, I assume you thought Morgan should have gotten more time?

Keeping a mediocre (at best) FB coach for 12 years is like "going through coaches like we change our underwear"? I guess I change my underwear a little more frequently than you must be! By the way, you might have a point about McCarney if he was the Head Coach at Florida...but he is only a position coach there. I think he has a pretty good reputation as a position coach but his reputation as a head coach (and his record) have kept him from getting any offers to be a head coach again.

You also state that "programs go through down years ITS LIFE"...I agree...however, I want to have a minimal number of down years and a maximum number of up years...KU does it...why can't we?

Lastly, I fail to see how anything you deem as "negative" on this site would have any impact whatsoever to any ISU sports program.

I think too many of you have been playing with Star Wars toys for way too long in your mom's basement and know very little about college basketball.

Oh man...comparing us to Kansas in basketball? Take a look at the talent Kansas brings in because they're Kansas. Your son's high school coach could coach them.

It's like Kansas saying, "Why can't we have a top ten wrestling program every year...ISU does."

Why not? We play in the same league don't we? Ostensibly, we want to compete for championships in that league...don't we?

I love how you just totally discredit the hard work and coaching that a guy like Bill Self puts in and totally dismiss it by saying they win "because they're Kansas".

Maybe you should look at Self's history...he has won everywhere he has coached...including taking Oral Roberts to post season play and taking Tulsa to the Elite Eight. Heck, Illinois had only won 1 conference championship in the previous 10 years to his arrival there and he won the conference 2 times in his 3 years there while leaving his successor a very well-stocked cupboard. By the way...take a look and see where his successor has Illinois now after 5 years at the helm (with all of Self's recruits now out of the program)...FYI...they will not be "dancing" this year!

Yes, KU is a historically strong BB program but how do you account for Dr. James Naismith having a 9 year record of 55-60 (.478) at KU? He sure didn't win because "they're Kansas" and he invented the damned game!

They don't seem like world beaters on paper but with Iowa State it seems like it is the less amazing rated classes that turn out great.

I cannot believe you can say this with a straight face.

I never said Self wasn't a good coach. However, he wasn't getting the recruits of the caliber of Kansas at Tulsa, was he? I believe it's a fact that it is easier to win with an extremely talented team versus one that struggles to recruit top-tier talent. You have to deal with egos and be a good disciplinarian, but do not have to worry about having 4 walk-ons on the court unless you are up by 40.

Nice job keeping it contemporary with the Naismith reference...absolutely nothing has changed in the college basketball landscape since he patrolled the sidelines.

Is that how far back you had to go to prove your point?! Naismith? I think you 'disproved' it.

We should all aspire to be KU and do. But we should do so realising that its not gonna happen overnight just as it didn't for KU.

Put me down as someone who could not care less about Naismith's coaching record at Kansas. Also your post did nothing to discredit the post that you responded to. His is much more valid and relevant to ISU's situation which involves completely rebuilding a program previously headed in the wrong direction.

I feel dumber for reading this. It makes no point other than it took KU over 100 years to get where they are. So with this logic we should be preaching patience.

Are you serious? Do you really understand what your argument is there? Naismith coached KU over 100 years ago . . . one hundred years. That is over one century- over five score- over ten decades- before the first world war, pick one. You do know that the original rules of the game dribbling was not a part of it and after every basket there was a jump ball, right?

And please do not cuss on a public forum, I can only speak for my own opinion when i say it is extremely disrespectful but I would suspect others share this opinion.

How did that turn out for them long term?

Sorry to respond so late to your question, hillary. I think you're missing the point. The bulls made the playoffs 2 years in a row, and then, yes, they imploded. The difference is that colleges recruit and don't draft, meaning that once we make the "playoffs," i.e. the tournament, two years in a row, the better recruits start coming in.

I suppose you could argue that free agency makes the pro game somewhat analogous, i.e. free agents flocked to the Celtics once they got KG and Ray Allen, but still, I'm sure you'd agree that it's quite different.
