***#14 Iowa State: Battle in the River City (Sat., Nov. 5)***

I don’t care what anyone says, the Brands are dumb enough to wrestle Lee even if he’s not 100% if they are worried about losing. I won’t believe he’s not going until the day of. Regardless of whatever they say. They probably won’t let him go but counting on those two dipshits to use logic is a bad game plan.
That's exactly what they did with Sam Stoll one year. 2018 maybe?

Thoughts/Recap. Great team performance. The addition of the young guys is really showing. They’re pushing everyone to new heights. Redding was my breakout star. Coleman the team MVP.

Terukina - obviously got a huge win against Barnett. He started very strong up 5-1 but almost blew the match getting outscrambled. He pulled off the win, but looked about to have some of his same trouble as previous years. Still needs to get better closing matches and scrambling. For early in the year you have to like where he’s at.

Redding - He flat out looks awesome this year. He’s wrestling at an extremely high pace with a ton of attacks. Really excited about him.

Swidersky - he’s only going to get better as his weight continues to adjust. He has leg attacks to compete with anyone in the country. Top bottom will be the deciding factor for his ceiling this year.

Johnson - I think any reasonable expectation for him vs Gomez was just hoping he could keep it to a major. He shut down absolutely everything Gomez tried and proved he is for real. Very quick and very strong.

57 - our guys are ok. Going to be our weakest weight for sure. Hope one of them can figure it out.

65 - Carr won a big match vs Hamiti. 3 takedowns to zero. All Hamiti’s points came off escapes and one stall. Score was closer than the match. It looks like the biggest adjustment for Carr will be his top/bottom at this weight. He got rode a good bit this weekend and wasn’t able to get to his cross wrist tilt he used so well last year. Obviously I’m holding him to a much higher expectation, but I did not like what I saw on bottom against LR, and Hamiti getting a cradle locked up. If either of those things happen against O’Toole, he’s getting decked.

74 - I love Gaitan, but would have liked to see Broderson in the match vs Wisconsin. I don’t see any reason to burn Gaitan’s redshirt this year. Don’t know who we’ll roll out vs Iowa, but a weight we definitely need to win with Brands out.

84 - Coleman is that dude. Love everything I see from him. Picking up right where he left off. Dominant.

97 - a lot of people have been taking Bastida to take a step back this year (I dunno why) but he hasn’t. He beat Amos easier than his match at nationals. I expect him to place higher this year and would love to see a matchup with Dean.

Hvy - This probably surprised me the most. Sam looked great! Two big wins. He’s knocking on that AA door.

You might get your wish down in New Orleans for Yonger. We need to talk about that potential match up. Same with Paniro. It’s one thing to take out Gomez. Another thing entirely vs the top guy there.

I really hope we get a crack at Caels boys. I know we’ll likely get humbled by the king of the mountain but that could put some extra piss in their vinegar and go a long way toward March

Agree with everything here. To me, Bastidas conditioning looks improved from last year and he’s going to keep improving as a mat wrestler. If redding can stay focused and keep his weight under control for the full season, he’s an AA threat

So, just for fun, that would leave us with:
Favored @ 125, 133, 165, 184, and 197
Underdog @ 141, 149, and Hwt
Tossups @ 157, 174

That seems extremely optimistic, but it would definitely mean we at least keep it close. Can't wait.
I actually don’t consider 174 a toss up. Stafford has proven he’s tough. But 149, now, I consider a toss up.

Good post. So much to be impressed by this weekend.

Wonder where David is at for weight right now, can’t help but think about David at 157, Gaitan at 165 and Brodersen/Devine at 174.

Either way, I’m with you on 174. MJ will get better, didn’t like him out there against Wisky.

So impressed by Redding, Schuyler, Paniro, etc among others. I think either one of Paniro/Robinson would have a chance at blood round/AA at 149.

You can tell Sammy is tangling with Yonger and Schon. He looks tough.

Wonder what Sam weighs right now, he looks quite a bit bigger and stronger than last year

Fellers might be a little scared.
Everybody keeps saying how good Iowa is going to be. They are pretty much guaranteed top 4 but compared to previous years I'm just not seeing it. They are lightyears behind penn State and I mean light years

Kysen seemed to fade last year. I’m wondering if limiting his matches somewhat would keep him more fresh and injury free for March.

Welcome back! Have to be happy to see that performance yesterday. The guys just keep improving and making those small adjustments. Kysen has always had issues finishing, if he cleans that up he’s a top 10 guy. Paniro wrestled mistake free against Gomez. Swiderski is a damn animal out there.

I'm 39 yrs old and have only seen (that I remember) ISU beat Iowa in wrestling one time. Until we win a toss up or two and don't sh*t the bed in matches we're favored...I'll never get excited about the possibility of beating Iowa. Seen that movie all to often. With that being said.... I love kool-aid!

Luckily some of these young kids are from Cuba, PA, NY and Michigan. They don't give a **** about what happened 10 years ago they are hungry for that competition.

Agree on all and by what I saw Carr will need to be ready for 165 getting out from bottom and ridding will be a bit harder for him at this weight. I think we should still redshirt Gaitan and what I would like is if Carr would go back down to 157 so Gaitan can go to 165 next year if Carr would go back down? Swidersky looks good but agree with bottom and top how he will do against some other guys. Coleman and Redding I would say looked the best at this point to start the season.
