Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Well of course they’re going to push for that. The question is just how much resistance they’ll get. If the other conferences hold together, they can overrule the SEC and Big10. The threats of breaking away are overblown at this point. Even if they don’t want to admit it, the SEC and Big10 still need the other conferences to keep CFB relevant. And they also need the other conferences for other sports. So they can’t just walk away.
I don't disagree that the SEC and B1G need other conferences and it's highly unlikely they could ever break off on their own. But it's interesting because this is basically the same logic as people use when they say the B1G and SEC will soon go to unequal revenue sharing from their media deals among member schools... the big dogs will demand a bigger cut for "carrying" the bottom half.

It's always going to be "you get less or we take our ball and play by ourselves".

It'll probably be something where you get revenue on a per team basis, and the conferences with the most teams in get the most revenue.
Here is what I think may happen, and considering the situation, I think it is fair.

These are just example numbers thrown out there, Not anything remotely correct or even educated guessing.

But I think what could happen is each conference that is in the playoff will get a set lump sum. Then they will get a bonus for each team that gets in. Possibly a bonus for each game they get, ie the champion will get more because they played more games.

example:
Each participating conference gets $10M.
Each participating team get bonus of $3M.
Each participant in a game, gets bonus of $1M.

Conference would be free to decide how this is distributed. Ie, to all in conference or bonuses to participants etc.

So obviously if this happens the SEC and B1G will usually if not always get more, but it makes it at least fair to a point that anyone can get those bonuses.

Im sure the B12 and ACC want it distributed equally but I dont think that happens and this may be at least a compromise.

And as much as I hate to say it, if there are more Big 10 and SEC teams in the playoff, they should get more.

I've been saying this for a few years now, most people dumb me into oblivion... Teams NOT in the SEC or B1G need to band together and demand equal revenue sharing (Playoff and Regular season) or threaten to break away. If the SEC and BIG want to call your bluff then fine, all we did was end up where they would have eventually put us anyway.

Sounds like a poker game where everyone can see your hand, but you still push all the chips in.

A certain defeat when it doesn't need to be a total loss.

Because then they would invite 12 teams or so to be like Washington and Oregon. Paid 1/2 rate with the hope to go full rate on the next contract. Those 12 teams would go.

I don't see any way the PAC, which is turning into a barely glorified Mountain West, keeps its spot as an auto-qualifier all that long. There's just no way it's not going to happen, similar to how Big East football was shown the door. The ACC has maybe 5-6 years tops left before it becomes feasible for schools to leave, there's no doubt the ACC will be monumentally weakened, possibly to the same point as the PAC. I don't think the other current P5 conferences threatening to break away is going to do much to scare the SEC and B1G.

They aren’t an auto qualifier right now in the 5+7

The PAC isn't?

B1G
SEC
Big 12
ACC
???

The general assumption is that the remaining four power conferences will always be rated high enough to be in the auto-bid category. Then you have 1 more auto-bid for the highest rated G5 conference champ. Of course, it's always possible that a couple G5 conference champs are rated higher than the P4, but unlikely.

I'd be willing to bet the SEC, B1G, Big 12, and ACC champions will be rated higher than the AAC, MAC, SunBelt, Conference USA, etc. and getting in every year.
100%, unless something really rough happens in the Big12 with parity being so high. Could end up like cbb where everyone takes losses but that’s pretty unlikely

Or Big12 could "alliance" the SEC and B1G, making sure equal distributin of the three and force out the other conferences. This would escalate the realignment process, kill the PAC and ACC. Would allow 3 + 9 situation where it's possible big and sec end up with more participation on the lower tioer. One thing for sure Yormark will be ready with multiple options.
