IHSAA State Wrestling 2024

Wait are you saying Osage wouldn't hang with Don Bosco if they were 1A?
Oh they would now for sure but I'm pretty confident they wouldn't have in 2020 or with Lisbon that year either. I just remember watching my 1A school in 2020 have 6 guys lose to either Don Bosco or Lisbon in the quarters and semis and thinking there really isn't that much difference between classes in wrestling too bad we couldn't bump up to 2A just to see what happens. Then during the finals that year the announcers talked for a few minutes about Osage voluntarily bumping up to 2A and my mind was blown because I didn't know you could do that.

The Association didn't make any deals with NBC Chicago, no matter how much you want to blame them for something they didn't do.

The Network (Krogman) thought they could get a sweetheart deal with a bigger reach by going to NBC Chicago. That failed miserably.
But the association could have put contractual language in their licensing agreement with IHSSN on platforms that IHSSN could resell their rights.

In HS sports free access to a broad audience should be #1 priority for Association. If maximizing money is priority, they need to relook at overhead costs.

I don’t see how they would score close to 183.5 points in 1A. Would be tough to get four champs also. I don’t think they would hang in a dual meet format, either.

"Hang" I think is a relevant term when it comes to Don Bosco, if Osage was in 1A this year you could maybe subtract 20 points from 183? I feel confident Don Bosco would still win the team title comfortably but Osage would get 2nd. Agree with you on the duals

Gotcha. Yes, agreed.

So rank the top 10 wrestlers at State Tournament
I would assume
1 is Ross
2 is Herrera
Who after that?

Knaack, Pearson, Fox, Stangel, Blume, Muller, Voinovich, ???

Helgeson would be on that list for me. I was super impressed by him.

Even though he lost I’d still have Magayna on there.

It was 2020, Osage won the 2A title with 85 points and Lisbon got runner up in 1A with 144 points and there was words exchanged on Twitter between cael happel and Osage kids about it
If that was 2020, and Osage was middle of the pack 1A size wise. That means they gained about 60 kids in grades 9-11 in a 2 year period. (2 years because if you request to bump up it requires you stay there for 2 years). What was Osages BEDS that year? If this is coming from Bosco, they are full of crap I’m believing. My kids’ school is in the TOI conference so I’ve followed Osage some.

Osage would have won the 1A title. Just for reference Stangel handled Kellen smith somewhat handily in his matches with him. Osage is on another level than Don Bosco for their studs.

2020 or 2021 was Osages crappiest team in a while I think.

From that Register article I linked in post #195, in 2020:
That night [Saturday night, 2020] the Osage wrestling program was the last one standing in a wild Class 2A team race to win the title. It was the Green Devils’ fourth team title in school history, but first since 1981, ending a 39-year drought. ........

Osage ultimately totaled 85 points to take down Union (78) and Centerville (66). Only six Green Devil wrestlers qualified, but five finished in the top five at their respective weights ........
... Mighty West Delaware entered as the heavy favorites to win, with 12 state qualifiers. The Hawks led after the first day, but fell hard during Friday’s quarterfinal round while Osage surged, pushing four wrestlers into the semifinals.
... “When West Delaware started to falter a little bit, our guys realized that they had a shot to win the whole thing. That lit a fire.
”The Green Devils soared, leading all 2A teams with eight pins. Those bonus-points gave Osage a sizable lead entering Saturday. ...

You could absolutely be correct and know more about that area of the state a lot more than me. I really believe if you average out the teams over the past 20 years or so I dont think there's much of a difference between 1A and 2A but others I'm sure feel differently. The fact remains Osage could have been 1A in 2020 and elected to stay 2A which I had no idea you could do and I vividly remember watching the finals that year and the announcers talking about it for quite a while saying it was a good move on Osage's part. The fact that those were down years for Osage and they still won a team title is unreal. I don't like comparing state champs, teams or individuals, between classes. You wrestle what's in front of you. My main thing in bringing it up was I was completely shocked at the time that a school could elect to bump up a class and from that point on got my wheels turning for my school who is always a big 1A in wrestling and football and 2A in basketball, golf, track, baseball, and softball.

My pov after watching the finals (and most of the tournament on flo)
1. Herrera is going to be tough to keep out of the lineup after Yonger is done. His pace and style reminds me of Yonger in a more traditional heavy weight body. He was impressive.
2. Jacob Helgeson is a physical specimen who has a style that will translate to college. Can someone please, please tell me he's committed to the Cyclones?
3. Kane Knaaktgeboren has a style that is very hard to describe. Kind of a mix of MJ & Feldkamp with Swiderski forward pressure. I have no idea how it will translate to college but I'm excited to watch.
4. Carter Pearson with a flawless win over Jake Knight. He reminds me of Nate Gallick in his composure, speed and tough defense. He never got out of position. He's on or near the top of my recruiting wish list.
5. Dreshawn Ross - Keep him away from FB recruiters. He's right there with Carter Pearson near the top of my list.... I'd offer his senior brother Damarion a sweet deal in hopes of a brother combo package.

Overall I'm excited for our current commits and think our coaches are doing a great job.
i was impressed with Kane's strength. Seems like he's put on a lot of muscle this year compared to past years. He was going toe to toe with a kid who looked bigger & he definitely got the better of him. I'd guess he's six feet tall so it will be interesting to see where he fits in the lineup down the road.

Bumping up has happened more often than people realize. I know football teams that have done it, and not just 8 mans going into 11. A local school elected to stay up a class in basketball instead of dropping because most of the teams they played were 2A and it gave them teams they regularly played throughout the year for the tournament versus teams they rarely played/saw. They felt familiarity was better than playing teams that were unknown.

That is where I knew that if you chose to go up that it’s a two year commitment. They didn’t want teams moving up and down on a yearly basis just to try to game the system.

Figured he’d be a cyclone but didn’t realize Helgeson is already committed?

My daughter goes to Johnston and follows wrestling. She confirmed she’s seen social media posts with the youngest Helgeson in an ISU singlet. But I wouldn’t necessarily trust a teenage girl’s take on the situation, though she’s much better at the social media thing than me.

Not sure if / how much he is cutting . I can see him filling out and adding bulk . I’d guess 157 in the not too distant future
