49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

So muffed punt takes away Pancheco fumble. That leaves the CMC fumble and XP. That is the difference.

Deebo did not play well. Aiyuk didn’t. Kittle didn’t. CMC was so-so. All those great weapons. None were difference makers. And the Defense never stopped them.
Mahomes had an Int, so turnovers were essentially even.

Outside the box - but would anybody be surprised to see Purdy take less money or structure his contract for the betterment of the team...? I hear all these pundits talking about max contracts and getting paid but I'm not sure if Brock is cut from that same cloth.

Thoughts?

So a low pay player takes a pay cut? How do you structure the lowest paid player on the team? What about Bosa, CMC, etc. ? Or do we pay only those guy’s astronomical salaries?

Doubt it. Union isn't a big fan of top players taking below market deals. There are certainly ways to structure the deal to give the team flexibility, but most guys only get one chance to cash in big and rarely do they pass on it.

Less money? I don't think he's stupid.

Chiefs needed to come out and score to start the second half and gave the Niners the ball at KC's 44. That pretty demoralizing if you ask me. However, KC's defense saved the day and force a punt.

Not nearly as bad as CMC’s fumble on opening drive. KC threw a long interception downfield. It didn’t negate a drive that had at least 3 points or more.

KC’s secondary was outstanding in coverage.

I know Purdy didn't play fantastic but I thought he played really well against a defense that absolutely dominated all season.
From the start he looked more comfortable and poised than Mahomes. It took until late in the second quarter until I thought Patrick looked comfortable. Which is all ironic because from the get-go the 49ers OL gave Purdy little time and protection as always.

Nope. No chance.

I don't know enough about OL assignments to know if that's the RG or RT's fault but I'd lean guard.

Not sure why they thought they needed to triple team the blitzing linebacker.
That left the RT trying to block 3 guys. He should have stayed in though, and at least tried to block Jones. Why would he leave him to block the DE?
The right guard slides down to block the LB blitzing up the middle, the center pulls around, making it look like a run to the left, hoping the LB's think run and do not get depth. The R tackle should have blocked to his inside, but is blocking towards the outside. The Chiefs also have the perfect blitz for the play, #20 is going to be free if the R tackle blocks down like he should of to pick up Jones.
Like any QB, the less time you give him the better the defense is, they forced Purdy into making a quick decision and he did not have time to sit and wait for the receiver on the outside to get open or scan back and see the other guy wide open in the endzone. If Purdy would of had another second its a TD.
The Chiefs had the same thing earlier in the game, Mahomes had to throw the ball quickly out to Kelsey to save time for the field goal, if he had more time to look inside, Rice was coming wide open and would have walked into the endzone, and no overtime would have occurred.

Purdy cannot take less money, he making the league minimum right now. They have him locked up for 2 more seasons for little bit of nothing, with that cheap contract they can use that money for players now, but that is not going to last much after next season. No way they allow Purdy to play that last season out without an extension, he could walk away and they would get nothing. Purdy will be paid after next season.

I don't recall saying he's stupid. I meant does he take $5M-$7M less in order to serve the team better (ala Salary Cap). Listening to his interviews I came away with the impression what if he goes against the grain...? I don't recall hearing a player being interviewed in which in unequivocally stated he's there to serve the team to the best of his ability.

Regardless, appreciate the responses so far.

Purdy played as good as I could have hoped for for a second year player in the Super Bowl. I’m super impressed. It’s not Purdy’s fault all of these 1st ballot hall of famers kept ******* him over. Guys like that should be carrying their 2nd year qb not the other way around.

* McCaffrey fumble
* Trent Williams false start
* Trent Williams holding
* Punt return misshap
* Moody (how is that scrub not cut yet?)
* Shanahan terrible play calling and over time coin flip choke
* Colton McKivitz deciding not to block Chris Jones in the most important play in the game.

Those penalties were drive killers.

This should have been a 14 point Niner win.

Purdy had more time in the pocket to pick a receiver and make a throw than Mahomes did for the first quarter. The 49ers really came after Mahomes, keeping him in the pocket and not allowing him to get outside.
The 2nd half that changed, Purdy started getting pressure from Jones and the Chiefs started to blitz him, forcing him to get rid of the ball quicker than he would have wanted. Mahomes went the other way, the line did a better job allowing him more time, and the two runs he had, were set your foot, nothing there and take off right up the middle. Both times they caught SF in a man coverage, so their backs were turned as he broke containment and sprinted up the field. That 4th down run my Mahomes was textbook, they motioned right to left, Mahomes sprints to his right, had Kelsey in front of him and wide to pass too if he needed it, the LB goes with Kelsey and Mahomes flew up into the open gap for 7 easy yards on a 4th and 1. Just a great play call by the Chiefs.
