49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Enjoyed this article about Brock but this quote gave me pause:

"What pulled the 49ers through was the immeasurables of Purdy. The gunslinger mentality. The mid-major resolve. The Mr.Irrelevant chip on his shoulder. The little guy toughness."

Mid-major? Dude came up as a 4-year starter in the Big XII, same conference as his opposing QB in two weeks. Not like he was grinding it out in the MAC or Missouri Valley.

End of the article is nice though:

Purdy may not outduel Mahomes, either. But it’s not off the table. It was said he couldn’t come from behind and he has. It was said he couldn’t carry the team and he did. It was said he wasn’t the reason the 49ers won and he was. He is, indeed, surrounded by talent. And he might get outclassed. He might come up short. But Sunday was more evidence of the gamer in him. He can manage up. He can manage down. Purdy isn’t afraid. Not to run for it, or sling it, or take the top off the defense. His pass to Aiyuk wound up a bit too deep — or pass interference might have prevented Aiyuk from getting to the ball — and Vildor had an interception chance. His job is to stay on top of the receiver, and he did. But the pass bounced off his helmet and into the arms of Aiyuk. Lucky? Absolutely. But fortune favors the bold. “I saw the replay,” Kittle said,“and I was like, ‘Just how we wanted it to look. Off the guy’s facemask right to B.A.’ Dang. Brock’s good at football isn’t he?” If he’s a game manager, he must be the premium version.

Do people think that a quarterback is only a Game Manager or a Playmaker? I think they have to be a combination of both.

It is hard for a NFL quarterback to be better than average at both skills and it's rare for someone to be great at both but I think that's what we are looking at here. Brock may not be the greatest-of-the-great playmakers in the game today but he is at least a good-to-great Playmaker AND, simultaneously, he is a great Game Manager.

Add-in that Brock is a natural born leader that people want to please and you have a franchise quarterback that brings out the best from the team.

New thought on last nights game - did we see the "professors gambit" in the 49ers defense? As impressive as the comeback was on offense, the niners D giving up 24 pts in the first half and only 7 in the second was absolutely huge. Other than the second stop on 4th down, I didn't really see anything schematically different, but it definitely felt different.
The defense is a big problem in the 2nd half of the season and playoffs. That's a huge problem against Kansas City too.

So called Iowa wannabee writer.... WTF is he making it sound like Kittle was the key to winning. Dude isn't smart enough to realize the play was dead after the Lion's player touched it. Trying to be like Ickholt and mad Chad. I'm "chortling" at you and your corpulence neck beard!
