49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

The good news is 2 years ago, prior to the NFL Draft, we all knew Purdy would be the talk of the NFL, leading in QB stats, and leading a team to the Super Bowl in year 2. I mean it was so obvious to all of us, hardly a surprise.

I'm far from an NFL stats expert but every time I checked stats all season it surprised me that there were always 3-4 top QBs where separating their stats was like splitting hairs, Brock among them. A lot of weeks when they had played the same # of games Dak and Brock had nearly identical #s.

I'm sure Drew Brees wouldn't trade his Superbowl MVP for an NFL MVP award...just thinking of a legendary QB who Brock most reminds me of.

Jokic didn't give a flying **** that they gave NBA MVP to Embiid last year as he was hoisting the Finals trophy. It was funny to follow, he was almost actively campaigning to NOT get MVP again.
d'accord! Winning the Aaron Rodgers Award would be nice, but winning the Super Bowl would be much, much better!

New thought on last nights game - did we see the "professors gambit" in the 49ers defense? As impressive as the comeback was on offense, the niners D giving up 24 pts in the first half and only 7 in the second was absolutely huge. Other than the second stop on 4th down, I didn't really see anything schematically different, but it definitely felt different.

Seems to be a pattern. GB was moving the ball pretty easily in the first half too.

Detroit wasted a David Montgomery game (They abandoned the RB position compared to the first half) Here are David's plays in the second half:

run for 6
run for 7
run for 5
run for 1
run for 16
run for -2 (goal line 3rd down)

Here are Gibbs:

Run for Fumble
Incomplete Pass target
4 yard reception

Honestly, the abandonment of what was working started at the end of the first half. Just consider the final Lions drive (All plays; 5 minutes remaining in the half):

DM run for 5
DM run for 6
DM run for 9
DM reception for 6
Gibbs run for -2
Incomplete pass
Gibbs run for 13
Sacked for -8
Gibbs run for 0
Pass for 23
Gibbs run for 3
Incomplete (Gibbs target)
Pass for 9
Incomplete
Gibbs run for 1
Gibbs reception for 3
FG

-----

David was superb last night in the run, in the pass, and blocking. The Lions should have let him carry them to victory.

Not a big Bosa fan anymore. He held out of training camp to get the biggest defensive salary in NFL history and has not produced this year. Sacks are lower, tackles lower, penalties higher. He gave up 2 huge running plays in the first half - including the 41 yard TD. But he was much better in the 2nd half with 1 or 2 sacks.

Enjoyed this article about Brock but this quote gave me pause:

"What pulled the 49ers through was the immeasurables of Purdy. The gunslinger mentality. The mid-major resolve. The Mr.Irrelevant chip on his shoulder. The little guy toughness."

Mid-major? Dude came up as a 4-year starter in the Big XII, same conference as his opposing QB in two weeks. Not like he was grinding it out in the MAC or Missouri Valley.

End of the article is nice though:

Purdy may not outduel Mahomes, either. But it’s not off the table. It was said he couldn’t come from behind and he has. It was said he couldn’t carry the team and he did. It was said he wasn’t the reason the 49ers won and he was. He is, indeed, surrounded by talent. And he might get outclassed. He might come up short. But Sunday was more evidence of the gamer in him. He can manage up. He can manage down. Purdy isn’t afraid. Not to run for it, or sling it, or take the top off the defense. His pass to Aiyuk wound up a bit too deep — or pass interference might have prevented Aiyuk from getting to the ball — and Vildor had an interception chance. His job is to stay on top of the receiver, and he did. But the pass bounced off his helmet and into the arms of Aiyuk. Lucky? Absolutely. But fortune favors the bold. “I saw the replay,” Kittle said,“and I was like, ‘Just how we wanted it to look. Off the guy’s facemask right to B.A.’ Dang. Brock’s good at football isn’t he?” If he’s a game manager, he must be the premium version.

Oh Gawd. When they make the movie they're going to show ISU as rinky dink campus aren't they.

Actually the long pass would have hit Aiyuk perfectly in stride had he not been bumped by the DB. Was not overthrown IMO.

SCLSU facilities.
I am not sure how I do not own this shirt.

In Memphis when our group checked into our hotel, gal at the front desk noticed our ISU gear we had on and proceeds to say, "You guy are from Ohio." We looked at each other and just shook our heads.

They will probably show clips of Caitlin Clark and people doing the wave at Kinnick with our luck.:rolleyes:
