STUDENT CHANT

I have a four year old. If I choose to take him to an event where I KNOW this is going to happen that's on me as a parent.

I can't protect my four year old from everything I don't approve of. My job as a parent is to tell him the people doing that are adults who are free to make their own choices but those aren't good choices and he will be disciplined if he does the same behavior.

This is wild but maybe it's just my job to parent?

I think it's a reasonable expectation to be able to take a child to a college basketball game. But I also think it's a reasonable expectation for said parent to expect some curse words in their surrounding area as that is typical, and HAs been typical, for quite some time.

The chants have become excessive and increasingly more vulgar. It's a complete lack of class and entirely unnecessary. Oddly enough it didn't used to be this way at least not remotely close to this degree. As someone who was at the game I can say yesterday's chants were overly vulgar and excessive for a college bball game, probably tripling the number or amount I have heard at other such games.

Myself, I never had kids so I can say whatever the **** I want.

However, here's another thought: encountering public profanity with your child present can be a teachable moment.

Remarks like, "Some people use words we consider to be bad when they're not able to think of a better way to express themselves" and "These are words we try not use ourselves because they are impolite, and we always try to show sportsmanship and character" and "I am proud of your good manners because you do not use such words. That is very grown up of you."

Of course, that's a speech for the ride home. If you live in Ames, you'll need to shorten it up somewhat.

For older kids, there's Science News:

This is a tame chant compared to the ones at the hockey games.
You can tell the hockey families from the other "softer sports" families very quickly.

I played and watched a lot of different sports growing up (but not hockey until I got into it as a fan later). But I can say the hockey families are without a doubt my favorite. Not afraid of a chant, a big hit, or a fight every now and again...(to say the least.) I respect the physical and mental toughness.

That's creative?

It's a classic. Like something off the KGGO playlist.

Kind of like when Mississippi Queen comes on. It kind of sucks, it's been played WAY more than it ever should, it's unknown why it still sees the light of day...

But there it is and people like it.

Ever heard your kids play video game? Ever heard your kids talk to there friends? I am not talking College kids. I am talking younger. I have a Freshmen at ISU this year. He was sitting by us in the balcony yesterday so was not swearing but would guess he would have been if in the Student Section. We wen't to dinner after than took some stuff up to his dorm room. We were there maybe 10 minutes I heard the Fbomb 4 or 5 times in the hallway while there. I was a student from 91-95 went to every game football and basketball and we were no different. I would say Hilton in general is more Tame now than then. To be honest I do not care about it, it does not bother me. My son swears to much, he is a great guy, 4.3 GPA in High School, was on the ISU Dean's list his first semester with a 3.9. So to me he can swear all he wants as long as he is a good person and a good student.

And then after you give that speech add on: “oh, and **** you for ******* up my life you little ****.” That’ll really drive the point home.

It has been that way for at least 25 years (my oldest memories of going to games).

I'm not saying its right or wrong...but to be surprised by it is just pure naivety.

Of the last 20-30 games I've been to (there are people who go to a lot more games on here than I do), most ISU involved games but some not, it's the most excessive chanting I've ever heard with vulgarities. I've heard chants involving a single play go on for much longer, but increasingly it seems like that's all the students go to these days.

The only game that compares for me personally is the Mizzou game last year. It wasn't nearly as excessive as it was yesterday, but they still did "F KU" chants multiple times. Really? Why are you chanting about KU during an Iowa State - Mizzou contest? Clearest example of "living rent free" I've ever witnessed.

What a great day and fun atmosphere. But am I the only one that cringes when our student section chants:

F**k KU ( or whoever we’re playing ) and

You suck D**k ???

We had a 8 year old boy sitting beside us with his father and he was as uncomfortable as it gets. Is the vulgarity necessary?
Absolutely, it is not necessary, but it is never going away. In one more generation, **** will be used in everyday language.

1. I grew up thinking that college students were the more intelligent and creative portion of the population. The use of simple vulgarities does not impress me. I expect that from a high school dropout but not a Cyclone.

2. Using primarily simple vulgar language is easy for the opponent to process and ignore. Using unusual and more creative verbal barbs would be more distracting.
Sounds like a good white paper to me, but nothing feels as good as the FU to most people.

The f*ck KU I can sort of agree with, but you suck D*ck was the kids name. But yeah our fan base is pretty rabid especially in big games. Wait till the Mormons come to town, that'll be a feisty day.

Honestly they all will be pretty feisty, but BYU should have the crowd amped

Man, I bet our students get extra scandalous and drink some *gasp* coffee before that game!

*Clutches pearls and faints*
