Ames Lager

Back pocket also does a lot of Hawkeye beers. I'm guessing they just view both as a good business decision and like you said probably a little easier to just partner directly with the AD. I am guessing they thought partnering with both ADs wouldn't alienate either side whereas choosing a collective to support would seem more one sided?
I think partnering with the ADs rather than the collectives is as simple as getting access to the official AD branding vs the collective branding. The I-State & 5 Bar logos are far more recognizable than the We Will logo, just like the tigerhawk is much more recognizable than the swarm buzzard. Just good business sense, IMO.

what other hawkeye beers does Backpocket produce besides Hawktoberfest?
by my count they have 3 ISU beers and 1 Iowa beer
I don't keep track of the Hawk beers because I don't really care but they definitely at least did a hazy for them. I don't remember the name

Please post response. I think we already know the answer.

Until then, West O for me.
Here is what they said:

Thanks for reaching out. We Will has partnered with West O Beer and with beer partnerships. We are not part of that as we have partnered with the University. Cyclone Athletics is the beneficiary of the revenue generated by the sale of our beers, Forever True, Cyclones Hazy and Clone Fest. As far as what they do with the money, we are not privy to that information. My wife is a proud alum of ISU and is proud to make this beer for the university that she attended and graduated from. We have long family ties to the University and that is where the idea came from. We are locally owned and operated in the state of Iowa and supporting us supports our local family-owned business as well as Iowa State University. The intention is not to directly compete with We Will, it is to support Iowa State University and we are proud to do that. I know Matt over there at West O and I am happy he is doing this as well and the hope is that this brings more excitement to the Cyclone Nation.

So, does that mean they were not willing to work with We Will if they were approached? Not sure. All I know is what Blum said, that no other Brewers were willing to work with them. I dont know if what he is saying is there can only be one beer partner, etc.

So take it for what it is I guess. The We Will beer is only Ames Lager. These others support the AD at least to some level. Peace Tree Legend supports the Trice Legacy Foundation.

Who cares what brewery chose to support what? It all helps ISU athletics.
Ames Lager goes to We Will
Everything else goes to the AD.

It isn't that complicated. Buy what ones you want. Ames Lager isn't the sole supporter of the collective.
the issue i have is the Ath dept doesnt need to generate revenue through creation of competing beers to Ames Lager

if they want to raise revenue they can do so by raising ticket prices, parking or (gasp) sell actual beer in their sporting venues!

I am confident that Ames Lager generates the most money of any of the WeWill partnerships and while i doubt he'll ever admit it, it has be frustrating for Blum that the Ath dept continues to undercut their effort by signing off on trademarks for competing beers when they themselves pushed back on WeWill/West O with their original design.

Those are fair points. I guess since I like all sorts of beer I'd be buying a variety regardless so it wouldn't really effect my buying habits. Instead of buying whatever breweries fest beer I'd buy CloneFest and that wouldn't really change how much Ames Lager I'd buy. But I suppose for certain people it might.

I do agree that the no beer sales is frustrating

Makes it simple for me. Ames Lager and WestO it is.

beyond frustrating.

when I speak with/entertain visiting fans they are totally shocked that (given our fan reputation with consuming alcohol) Iowa State doesn't sell in Hilton or Jack Trice, especially given the success of alcohol sales at almost all the schools near us geographically or in our conference.

"According to a survey by The Associated Press of Power 5 conference schools and Notre Dame, 55 of 69 of them -- 80% -- now sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days. Of the remaining schools, some sell alcoholic drinks in nonpublic areas of the venue such as suites; others do not sell booze at all."

What does this really mean? That Backpocket sends an amount of proceeds to ISU as a separate donation? That Backpocket pays the licensing fees to ISU and profits?

As far as I am aware, Backpocket does NOT do a Hawkeye Beer. Hawktoberfest is not affiliated with EIU just like Clonefest was not affiliated with ISU until this past year.

I bought the last Ames Lager in the store today at WDM Fareway. I told the manager I would have bought 5 if he could get it on the shelf. For whatever reason, Ames Lager is still hard to find.

Big find at Oskaloosa Hy Vee today! It’s in the back of the store near the employee entrance to the stockroom. I left a couple on the shelf for the next guy.

Tried to find in today at the fareway office Mills Civic with no luck...
I still haven't had an Ames Lager and have given up actively looking long ago. I've been able to get all the other ISU beers in Cedar Falls and I'm sure I'll be able to get the new Back Pocket brew. Last time I asked for it, the beer guy thought the Trice Legacy was what I was looking for.
