*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

This is completely random, but does anyone here know Thom McDonald the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics? My friend was given tickets from a friend who was a big Houston fan last night and they were directly behind the Houston bench. As soon as we sat down we had the privilege to sit next to this gem. His first words to us were are you guys ISU fans. We said yes, and he goes on to say you guys won’t have “sh@t to cheer about tonight”. Five minutes into the game he goes on a rant about how he paid for these tickets and we deserve to be in the balcony where the poor people sit. And how he will get us kicked out of her sooner than it took us to sit down. Mind you we werent being arrogant or disrespectful whatsoever. Then Kelvin Sampson daughter comes up to my friend telling us to leave these aren’t your seats and makes a scene. The more I learned about Thom the guy is an ISU graduate. I’ve never in my 33 years of life met a more entitled POS in my entire life. Sorry for the rant, but I had to put this out there. I was in complete shock with how a guy that is the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics treated my friend and I and could care less that he was doing it.

Fairly certain Thom is Cap Timm on Cyclone Alert.

Also something fun I noticed on Torvik...

ISU win expectation to start (this is about as low as it ever went) = 24.0%

ISU win expectation after Shead tied the game at 53 = 42.0%

ISU win expectation after Milan's ridiculous spin jumper = 78.8%

Milan first free throw = 93.5%

Milan second free throw = 97.4%
What was it when the score was 14-0?
(Serious question. )
Skewed heavily cause of ****** teams that we beat up on. Big12 is a meat grinder and there isn't many teams that we are going to score 70+ points on.
No one will mistake this team for the Loyola Marymount teams, but I think the offensive improvement will mean no losses in which only scoring in the 40s. In fact, I bet 57 will be the low point game for the rest of the season. With the possible exception of at Houston.

I haven't been around long enough.... but would this win qualify as one of our all time biggest?...top 10ish?
Really hard to have an immediate answer to that one, as we’ve piled up some serious top five wins, and I think postseason games have a huge bump in importance. Plus, regular season wins seem to matter more later in the season (and in context to how the season went.

The short answer: it’s probably in the top twenty of regular season conference wins, but time will tell.

If you’re talking strictly in terms of ranking I’d say yes. We’ve had some big wins in Hilton, but only a handful against #2 or #1.

Lots more in the #3-10 range, but pretty rare to beat 1 or 2.

To be honest, I’m not sure this feels like as big of a deal as it otherwise would because we don’t have wel-established rivalry with Houston. So may not feel the same way it would against KU, for example.

But statistically speaking this is the biggest win at Hilton in 5 years and probably top 5 all time.

Houston is NOT overrated. They have size, length, strength, athleticism, skill, playmakers, elite defense and good coaching. Iowa State is good enough to beat elite level teams in Hilton. Houston will be just fine in the Big 12.

And if they didn’t start the game in a 14-0 hole, they beat us by double digits in Hilton. Credit to TJ for putting a ton of pressure on them early but Fran said it right - they’ll learn from our loss and be better for it.

I don’t think I’ve seen a better ball pressure team in recent years. Their guards are LEGIT.

I’m confused. This guy was an ISU fan or a Houston fan?

They're not tough to officiate. Call the fouls that are there and they will stop fouling so damn much.
It would be interesting to watch the refs actually call fouls on a WV Houston type team. Once you foul out enough of the players what happens? How many games of fouling out the players does it take to change the style of play?

ZRF, you may not have noticed while you were evidently on sabatical, but Rob has been playing great. Since returning from injury, so has Hasan. This is a luxury! I trust TJ to use them as he feels appropriate.
I like your style. Calm and direct but not over the top, although you could climb a ladder or two w/ Zoro. :)

IMO it doesn't seem like as big of a deal because the top teams just aren't that dominant any more. 4 of the top 5 lost in the last two days. There is a ton of parity in men's basketball right now. I mean, 13 wins might win the conference this year.

I put Self in a different category though. Yes, his recruiting tactics are sketchy at best. But ultimately he’s been very complimentary of other teams in the league and he doesn’t come off as an ******* on the court. I’ll take that over Sampson any day if I were other players or coaches in the league.
So he cheats with respect to the rest of the league. I see TCU got hosed in Lawrence already. We beat Houston knocking off the rest of the competition, and KU gets gifted a couple games at home. Seems like a typical big12 season. Bill's definitely in a category of his own.
A rose (I mean a turd) is still a rose (I mean a turd) by any other name.

Kind of a catch 22: ISU is established enough over the years where beating a top 5ish team at home isn't surprising, but they're still limited enough that they'll need to play well to beat most P6Ish level teams. That includes OSU on Saturday.

I remember the euphoric David/Goliath type of feel from this type of win in the early 90s vs. a KU or OSU '92 etc.

The other night was more of a relief for the group to get a win vs. someone good.
