Nick Saban retiring

That answers my question---I was wondering if they had an internal candidate.

I'd be very leery of taking that job. I'd much rather be the guy that replaces the guy that replaced Saben than the guy that replaces Sabin.

Same situation many yrs ago when Bear Bryant retired.

If I'm Bama I take a swing at Kirby Smart, he was DC there from 2008-15. If he's not interested then they should look at Lanning. He was only at Bama a year, but at 37 he's done a solid job as Georgia DC and his year at Oregon.

I would think Nick Saban would have a lot input with AD as a who's who of hot coaches have been at Bama the last decade: Smart, Lanning, Sarkisian and Kiffin.

Smart is an UGA Alum and former player.

James Franklin?

James Franklin can't win a big game to save his life but he's made an entire career out of getting contract extensions...crazy.

I'd go Sark or DeBoer as first 2 calls. Lanning doesn't have enough experience to prove he can do it over the long haul and without Nike money if I'm Alabama (although he'd be my backup choice if Sark and DeBoer said no).

Salute Nick Saban on a great career He set new standard for greatness in college football The game will miss him

My money is on Norvell or Franklin. Lanning etc. won't take the job. Alabama is not an elite job in the SEC once you remove the Saban of it all. Its recruiting ground and NIL capacity are worse than at least five conference opponents.

Norvell might want to GTFO of the ACC as it is. And Franklin may understand his days are numbered at PSU if he can never beat OSU or Michigan.

What makes Franklin a winning hire? Seriously. Not that he's a bad coach, but what's he done to earn the gig? Dabo has a national title. Some of the other guys are young climbers who have massive upside. Franklin would be about as 'meh' as it gets for a program like Bama.

Penn St would be happy to see him go

I agree. I don't think Franklin is a great hire for Bama. I'm just skeptical that they will get their Plan A or B (or even C or D). It's hard to think of a place where the expectations will be more out of whack with the tools moving forward. The fanbase will expect Saban levels of success while Alabama in a vacuum (without the GOAT head coach) is not a top 10 job nationally and perhaps not a top 5 job in the SEC.

As an Oregon alum I hope to god Dan doesn't leave. Uncle Phil going to have to lock him down. TBH I think following Sabin would be not be fun. Dabo/Kiffin/Norvell all seem plasable.

I have a feeling Alabama sinks down towards the middle of the pack in the SEC now.

Yes yes they're a big brand and won a ton of games under Saban but Saban's gone now.

Alabama just isn't a very wealthy state compared to many of its SEC neighbors. I can't imagine Alabama has anywhere near the NIL resources compared to some of these schools...

Florida
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Texas
Texas A&M

It's a job with the highest of expectations but sneakily modest means compared to its peers.

(I also think Oklahoma might find itself in a similar situation in that conference.)

The Bama fanbase and boosters are going to have to adjust their expectations. It's unlikely anyone matches Saban's run, mostly because nobody really did what he did before and none of it's getting any easier. Between super conferences, 12-team playoffs, NIL, transfer rules, and a whole lot of programs having a whole lot of money to throw around at coaches, none of it's going to get any easier.
