*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

If we lost I was going to wonder if the inability ti close the last 4 minutes was going to be a trend
I had said before the game in this thread that was a concern of mine - it's something the team needs to figure out. I'm not really worried about it anymore.

Although, as I said before, the OU and TAMU games were both problems late because Tamin had fouled out (coincidentally the only two games this year he's had >3 fouls)

Anyone else watch Baylor-BYU? They both looked like finesse teams to me which is surprising because Baylor usually has length and plays good defense.

I think we matchup well with any team in the conference right now.
Agree. Even so, next week AT BYU and AT TCU we are likely underdogs in both games after we just beat #2 in the nation. Right now, 11 of our 14 teams have a record of 11-3 or better. I can't imagine this isn't the most difficult conference, ever. I know that's subjective and no way to "prove", but, just, .....Wow!

If you can’t handle opposing fans cheering, you should never go to an away game.

I’m guessing Memphis was their only away game even approaching Hilton for AAC games. They did win @UVA last year but I have no idea what their fan support is like.

We won last night, but we are not going to win a lot of games against better teams going 3/15 from outside the arc.
If a team can get to the FT line (and make the FTs), that team doesn't have to have a great 3pt shooting night. The problem in the prior OU game was that ISU shot the 3ptrs poorly and didn't get to the FT line enough.

At least by the analytics, we'd be a 2-3 pt favorite at TCU right now.

Looking at the TCU metrics, that will be a FASCINATING game. They are #1 offensively in taking shots at the rim and they are almost last in # of 3s taken. Defensively we are #1 in preventing shots at the rim and force our opponents into taking a huge number of 3s.

TCU also has a huge tossup game at home tonight against OU, which will be a good measuring stick for both

Remember how bad Eduardo Najera would kiss up to the refs and just constantly work every call? I swear I saw him pat a ref on the butt several times. People remember beating KU and Texas for those B12 titles but the OU teams of that era were really tough too.
I'm liking him less than I did yesterday. Which wasn't much.

Statement win that will pay dividends on Selection Sunday. Also, Hason has been rock solid since returning from injury. His return makes the front court very formidable.
Hason played 14 min., and got into some foul trouble. TJ appears to be bringing him along more slowly now, after his 1st game back from injury.

Anybody know how his foot is feeling?

For me there are a few differences that have me disagreeing with you that we aren't better offensively; however, I will start by saying some of our scoring droughts are concerningly similar. We are better from the guard court at being a threat to penetrate. Lipsey could drive last year, but wasn't much of a threat to hit from outside, to the point defenders backed off of him daring him to shoot, compared to last night where they often doubled him trying to get the ball out of his hands. I also love that he is able to put the soft touch high of the glass like we have seen Baylor's guards do so often. Gilbert adds athleticism and liked that he is rebounding better. While he may look for the contact rather than the finish, when stopped in the lane he can often use his athleticism to actually rise up enough to get a shot off. Our FT % is a few percentage points better than last year, and in a close game like last night that can be the difference. While we still struggle at times in the half court, and I realize we haven't had a ton of conference games yet, we are getting about 6 points per game more off turnovers than we did last year.
Our 3-point shooting is significantly better than last year. We're not great but we have four guys that the defense has to go out and guard. That allows us to run our offense more effectively.

Great pic!! Black dog sighting! Looks like a poodle or poodle mix. I would love to get an inside story on this. Has to be a working dog? Or, entertainment (hot seat guy??).

One day, when I was still working, a patient, a young man probably in his 30's was in our clinic getting PT. He had a working dog with him. I, being the curious type, asked him what he used the dog for, because to me it didn't seem like he would need a working dog. He told me he was a severe type 1 diabetic and uses the dog to let him know when his blood sugar is too low/high. He said the dog had saved him several times.

It is amazing what dogs can do, and be trained for. They are truly man's friend and helper!

Just rewatched the first half. Man, that first 6 minutes was entertaining! As impressive though, is the way we responded to Houston cutting our lead way down. Didn't flinch, and before they caught us on the scoreboard, pushed the lead back to 10 at the half.

That poise carried into the second half, as even though Houston finally took the lead late, the guys never flinched, let alone panicked. While it sucked to lose a big lead in the A&M game in the holiday tournament, I think our guys clearly learned from it and it paid off here.

Well shoot, we may have to relinquish our " one of the toughest places to play 5 minutes before tip-off" award, :(
There is always a little electricity in the air before a big game. It was like a morgue in there right before tip off. It was strange how quiet and empty it was even when they were announcing the starting lineups. Once the game got going and everybody got to their seats (very late arriving crowd) the people that showed up were very loud and supportive.
