*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

If we had lost, I would have thought the same thing I thought against OU: played pretty well overall against a good team, got enough good looks to win, didn't make enough shots, can't shoot 43% overall and 19% on threes (or in this case 38% and 20%) and expect to win many Big 12 games.
If we lost I was going to wonder if the inability ti close the last 4 minutes was going to be a trend

There was a story sometime in the last two years on how TJ and the staff coach the players on stuff like that: don't respond to hard fouls / bad calls, don't jaw with the officials, those kinds of things, basically a team of anti-Caitlin Clarks.
I love that mindset, and even more so when I see other team's players spend their energy complaining because it never changes anything, so you just became unfocused for nothing.

That was an offensive foul, but I believe there was something of a “compromise” and called a travel, though it looked like a legal eurostep. Not sure if that was the play.
He turned it over, so it was more of a play on situation

I agree completely. It always bothered me that the AD excludes winter break games from the student season ticket. That's 4 games. That said, they reserved some seats behind the baskets for students to be given the opportunity to purchase and some students obviously did. There was a sizeable contingent behind the basket closest to Houston's bench and they made some good noise.

In general, the crowd was great for the game last night considering a ton less students then normal. Awesome job old people!*

*Let the record reflect I also fall within the definition of "old people"

After I read his comments, I looked through one of the game threads on a Houston fan forum and they decidedly felt ISU got the benefit of the calls and was mugging them all night.
I enjoyed their bench player who was called out of bounds near our bench in the 2nd half being completely baffled by the call. The ref could've called traveling, out of bounds, or a hook and been correct.

And guess what kids?

ISU could hit a groove like we all dream of and get beat in the tourney by 1 PM CST Thursday.

Ain't it grand?

OR we could still be playing ball in April. You're darn right I can dream:D

To be fair I'm guessing somewhere in between the 2 is where we end up.

I don't think ISU goes far without both. While the minutes can fluctuate based on matchups and how each is playing, but when both guys can play 20ish minutes, they are both very effective. I don't think it would be possible to do what is asked defensively of either guy playing 30 minutes. They have to expend a ton of energy. Where Ward really can shine is against the long athletic teams that hammer the offensive glass like VCU. Tre and Rob are both physical guys that will clear space, but against those super rangy guys that can get up off the floor they give up some tap outs on the offensive glass.

I wouldn't say our rebounding is necessarily worse with Rob vs. Ward, but it's a bit different. Rob's a lot more going to clear space and the guards have to rally and clean up the glass. Ward's going to typically go up and get the board. Lipsey, Gilbert, C. Jones and Pavs do a good job chasing down boards in space cleared out by Rob and Tre. That was one of the big adjustments after the tournament. Guards started cleaning up the defensive glass, Pavs getting some run, and now with Ward back this is a good rotation of complimentary players.

I saw something last night that I thought I’d never see. Hasan got out jumped on a board. Crazy.

This is completely random, but does anyone here know Thom McDonald the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics? My friend was given tickets from a friend who was a big Houston fan last night and they were directly behind the Houston bench. As soon as we sat down we had the privilege to sit next to this gem. His first words to us were are you guys ISU fans. We said yes, and he goes on to say you guys won’t have “sh@t to cheer about tonight”. Five minutes into the game he goes on a rant about how he paid for these tickets and we deserve to be in the balcony where the poor people sit. And how he will get us kicked out of her sooner than it took us to sit down. Mind you we werent being arrogant or disrespectful whatsoever. Then Kelvin Sampson daughter comes up to my friend telling us to leave these aren’t your seats and makes a scene. The more I learned about Thom the guy is an ISU graduate. I’ve never in my 33 years of life met a more entitled POS in my entire life. Sorry for the rant, but I had to put this out there. I was in complete shock with how a guy that is the commissioner of Iowa Junior college athletics treated my friend and I and could care less that he was doing it.
Closet hawk?

Even though he gave props to the Cyclone fan base, Sampson’s post game was just weird. Angry, disinterested. Almost MadFran like.
His team was playing extremely sloppy. You could see him getting agitated right away during the game. We all know that was due to Iowa States defense though so he can continue to cry.

I thought the crowd was great on TV last night and I also thought it was extremely well officiated except when BRE got taken out.

Anyone else watch Baylor-BYU? They both looked like finesse teams to me which is surprising because Baylor usually has length and plays good defense.

I think we matchup well with any team in the conference right now.

With that said, offensively - while acknowledging again that Houston is REALLY freaking good offensively - I do worry a bit on this side of the ball. The numbers/metrics do NOT back up my statement here, but I will say it anyway - I do not think we are a better offensive team than we were last year.
For me there are a few differences that have me disagreeing with you that we aren't better offensively; however, I will start by saying some of our scoring droughts are concerningly similar. We are better from the guard court at being a threat to penetrate. Lipsey could drive last year, but wasn't much of a threat to hit from outside, to the point defenders backed off of him daring him to shoot, compared to last night where they often doubled him trying to get the ball out of his hands. I also love that he is able to put the soft touch high of the glass like we have seen Baylor's guards do so often. Gilbert adds athleticism and liked that he is rebounding better. While he may look for the contact rather than the finish, when stopped in the lane he can often use his athleticism to actually rise up enough to get a shot off. Our FT % is a few percentage points better than last year, and in a close game like last night that can be the difference. While we still struggle at times in the half court, and I realize we haven't had a ton of conference games yet, we are getting about 6 points per game more off turnovers than we did last year.

I don't remember if it was a recent CW&BB podcast or the Let Him Cook cast, but they were thinking BYU is a paper tiger and is in for a rough ride in the Big 12, based on the 11-point home loss to Cinci (and the only reason the game was that close was BYU had a guy hit nine threes).

Nothing wrong with losing @Baylor by 9 (I'd extend that to say, nothing wrong with losing @anywhere in the Big 12 by 9).

Yeah, I watched both of their games so far and they look like a middle to bottom tier team to me. I don't know why the metrics like them so much, especially their defense. They look really soft to me.

Baylor is built the same as last year. Good guards who can light it up but their defense is really suspect.

The flagrant foul...if that's not the highest level of flagrant foul you need to just have one level. Intentional or not (and it's a real stretch to think it wasn't intentional) he slammed a player in the air all the way to the ground by the upper body including having his fingers hooked into the cheek of his mouth.
That play reminded me of the way Laimbeer from Detroit used to play defense when guards like Jordan would ty to penetrate to the hole...put them on the ground!

Pretty good showing against the #1 defense in the nation. Only 12 turnovers against a team that had a TO rate of 27%.
We had 70 possessions, so we turned it over on just 17%. We were much less careless with the ball than what I have seen in our noncon games (like, don't pass to a guy who is already blanketed by a defender). Good coaching!

Also, Houston had 2 fast break points for the entire game. That is incredible. I'll bet so far this year they have feasted on fast break. Again, coaching matters. 1. Don't turn it over in the backcourt. 2. Get back, back, back on defense.

I didn't watch that game, but I think you're right about Baylor. From 2020-2022 they had a top 25 defense all 3 years to go along with a top 15 offense. But last season their defense on Barttorvik was ranked #102, and this year it's #93 (with the #2 offense last year and #3 offense this year). I'm not sure if that's in part due to Jerome Tang leaving or if it's more of a personnel issue.
