Williams & Blum Pod: Cy-Hawk, Omaha & offensive coordinators

The counterpoint to CW/Blum's top WBB player argument is would Clark have been as popular in an era without social media and without every game televised/streamed in some fashion?

In Rebecca Lobo's senior year (1995), for example, they had 2 regular-season games on national TV (one against Tennessee, one against Kansas as part of a MBB/WBB DH with KU) and 6 home games on Connecticut public TV. That was it until the later rounds of the NCAA Tournament. That season, ESPN/ESPN2 only aired a total of 21 WBB games for the entire year (including the tournament).

I still think we are trying to force him to play a position that doesn't suite him,

We are trying to play him on the block posting up, he's more of a slasher.
He is really good going to the basket. Finishes well with a soft touch. That shot he made last game when he got fouled in the body was his best play so far. That took strength and skill to finish.

Like Williams and Blum talk about do you move him to the 3 and switch Him and Mom when they are on the court at the same time? Why not use these buy games and experiment him at the 3 with King at the 4?

I don't know why people try to diminish Clark's national relevance. If she wasn't a Hawk I think people some people would talk differently. She isn't getting national deals for being a state of Iowa topic. She is getting national deals because she has national relevance.

@brentblum you're incorrect citing Omaha's lack of u18 development.
MOKAN Elite is one of the best EYBL programs and Omaha helped them win Peach Jam
Link Academy is one of the best prep schools and had 4 kids in the 2022 ESPN top 100 when Omaha attended

Yeah, he played in the CIML but with his background in AAU, Prep, USA Basketball and All star game appearances one could argue he came to ISU as ready as any HS recruit signed in recent memory
I respectfully disagree. Before I go into depth about my view point on Omaha, I think he's a great kid whose best basketball is ahead of him. With that being said, I came into the season with serious questions about Omaha's development as well. Despite the fact he played on all of the top circuits over the spring/summer, he lacked a college skill that would immediately translate. Him being raw in that sense is the main reason why he has not lived up to expectations to this point. I believe a lot of the scouts who had him as a 5 Star recruit were making assessments based off of his body and long term potential, not necessarily the ability he had at that particular moment in time.

Sports Illustrated NBA profile of Omaha

Biliew should get a ton of opportunity at Iowa State, even as a freshman. He will have the chance to play a huge role and really showcase his upside in a variety of scenarios. A five-star recruit, he was arguably one of the ten best players in his high school class and opted to take his talents to a Big 12 program that should allow him to spread his wings and grow.

And up until this point they got it wrong. Nothing in his game indicates he can play the power forward at a high level and he doesn't have the offensive skillset to play on the wing. He's a tweener, which is the main reason he is struggling right now. The reason it didn't show early was because he has been blessed with an NBA body/athleticism.

curious to hear your logic on this
I don't know about Watson, but Omaha's camp was pretty openly only planning on a year in college. And if that's still his plan, he can go G-league, continue to develop his game against professional talent, and collect a paycheck. His minutes and production, this year, won't have a ton of impact on that. NBA is all about potential.

Sure i understand that, but as slow as he has adjusted to NCAA level, another year may benefit him. Might make himself quite a bit of money if he puts up good results. Goes from a G league guy to a potential 1st round pick

He can go to the G-league and still be a first round pick. He can join the G-league without declaring for the draft, and play for a year and still be eligible for the NBA draft in 2025. That's a totally viable path as well.

And I could totally see that being an attractive option for him. If he projects as an NBA 3, but in college he's being asked to be a 4, he might feel like playing in the G-league might give him a better opportunity to prepare for a professional career, than another year in college would.

maybe WeWill can match a G-League salary and he can develop against players in the best college basketball conference :):)

Standard G-League salary is about $40k. It’s become a question of where a player thinks they can best position themselves and how much they hate class.
