New Uniforms Revealed

Sometimes I think I need a translation?

He means the Commanders. I've seen their nickname reduced to Commies a few times. I personally prefer calling them the 'Manders.

I'm mocking a terrible rebrand. Both the name and the execution.

They had so many good options...

Washington Mustangs (after the WWII fighter, not a horse)
Washington Presidents
Washington Redtails
Washington Warthogs
Washington Wolves

You know, names that would honors the Tuskegee Airmen or the history of the franchise. Instead, we ended up with what sounds like a generic create-a-team from a low-rent Madden knockoff.

I agree. And I thought there was some fairly recent talk about a new name, again? For sure, there are many who feel like you (and me) regarding the name Commanders. I don't like it either.

I guess the talk has died down for now. I feel like the Washington Football Team was a better name, personally. Not saying much.

There's two NFL teams who have names that piss me off...

Washington Commanders
Arizona Cardinals

Yes yes I know the Cardinals are one of the original franchises from the 1920s. And yes yes I know they received their name by adopting the maroon uniforms of the University of Chicago.

But **** it the Cardinals are a baseball team.

Something like the Phoenix/Arizona...

Firebirds
Scorpions
Sidewinders
Whirlwinds
Roadrunners

...or a hundred other options would be better for a desert team than "Cardinals."

A pirate-themed team like "Raiders" doesn't work particularly well in Las Vegas, either. But the Raiders are a marquis franchise in the league. The Cardinals are historically one of the most inept.

I also dislike the San Francisco "Giants." The Giants are a football team now. They could have picked up on something with more regional flavor, like the old PCL San Francisco Seals did.

How 'bout the Washington Rednecks? Inspired by Redtails, Redskins, etc. Ha.

As I'm thinking about all of this, Red Storm wouldn't be bad. St. John's did it. Something with 'Red' in it to honor the history of the former name. It would be better that what they chose!

I thought Redtails was the easy slam dunk, but I don't blame them for wanting to stay away from any form of racial tie in.

Honestly, I agree with you that Washington Football Team was better than Commanders and had a certain old school charm to it. Should have leaned into that, imo.

I just think if they're going to keep the burgundy and gold... a lovely color combination but the burgundy obviously inspired by native skin tones so let's not act like there isn't a sly reference in there... then I don't see why they can't keep the "Red" and go "Redtails" or "Redwolves" or something like that.

Going from racial slur to something that honors the Tuskegee Airmen is about as much of an improvement as one can make. And if you're keeping the burgundy, I don't see why you can't keep the "Red-" prefix for further continuity. Either that or just start completely over with a new name and colors.

I thought it should have been Warthogs because of the tie it to the Hogs nickname for the great O-lines of the 80s and 90s teams. They also could have used the military imagery with the A10 Warthog. They actually did adopt a Hog character mascot, Major Tuddy, as part of their Commanders rebrand.

But the similarity was probably too close to Arkansas, especially since both teams use maroon as a primary color. Though I think they should have done it as a middle finger to Jerry.

"Razorbacks" doesn't sound much like "Warthogs." Arkansas cardinal and Washington burgundy aren't quite the same colors, either (unless we think Iowa State and Minnesota use the same "red" shade).

Plus Arkansas doesn't have the gold mixed in. The NFL doesn't have another team with a porcine nickname, so it would be somewhat unique and, as you say, a lovely homage to the "Hogs" that won them a few Super Bowls back in the day. So easy to come up with something better than "Commanders."

Yet here we are.

I have a feeling that Jerry Jones was never going to let one of his rival teams get anywhere close to the imagery and iconography of his alma mater. Which is exactly why they should have done it.

Especially when it's not like Dallas and Washington don't have a rivalry or anything...

If Tampa Bay can get away with "Buccaneers" when there were already a "Raiders" then I don't know what legal foot Jones would have to stand on about "Warthogs" other than he doesn't like it.

Al Davis tried to sue Tampa Bay back in the day... and he was laughed out of court.

Easy solution to new unis: Copy Commanders Nike template for Cardinal, Gold, White and Black (when used). Helmets remain as-is with one change: use Punching Cy at times on white helmet. Number font can also remain as is.

These ‘Manders uniforms are the single worst in the NFL. This new design was/is awful. I would be very embarrassed and upset if Iowa State adopted anything like this. The font choice alone is criminal.

Redhogs, mm OK. Redhawks sounds a little better.

We are already coming up with 10+ better names than what they chose!

I read that Kansans were allowed to vote on their new license plates.

Hint, JP!...Cyclone fans, uniforms, hint, hint...

Then you must really hate ISU’s current FB unis. The only essential differences are the shoulder stripes, number font and obviously Maroon vs Cardinal.
