Time for a Real Discussion About Caitlin Clark

Correct. Only if she had a huge run out would I see her scoring in the traditional sense and I could see her getting chased down if there was a defender close by .

Again, its not a jab at her. Its just, having watched male and female soccer players square, the Williams sisters square off against "lower" tier male professionals etc - and even an olympics relay race - its just how things are.

I never came as close to dying from laughter when, was it Griner? Who said she could guard Shaq in his prime or something like that? Or that she wished she had played him? I feel like she made some kind of insane . Never mind. Not Shaq.

Demarcus Cousins. But still. That'd be a no

I'm curious what Clark's 40 is. Her 100? Agility numbers? What does she squat and clean? Vertical? My guess is similar to an average athletic freshman or 8th grade boy?

She'll have some local people watching a bit more but it won't move the needle much on the national level unless she sets the league on fire. And even then, it's the WNBA. even with increased viewership this season, only about 500K are tuning into watch your average game. And frankly, some of that bump was probably games on channels that had nothing else to broadcast due to the writers strike.
500K watch a WNBA game on tv? That seems WAY high to me.

Meh, I follow the MN team because of Bridgette C. and then only because someone on CF does the heavy lifting of connecting everything. She'll graduate and she'll disappear into the WNBA like the rest probably get some Olympic coverage also.

I never understand why we can't just let female athletes be great instead of instantly comparing them to men....

In this case it's because it's two people who don't care about women's sports on their own terms but also know that Clark is a big story so of course they have to relate it back to the thing they actually know and care about

That’s probably the only reason they even get talked about at all TBH. The people who talk about them in that way want others to think women in sports can do whatever men can do and at the highest levels, it’s just not possible.

Of course I could too. If I grew up with the money and resources she had and my single mother could afford the best coaches and camps to get better, then why couldn't I be just as good as Clark.

But, no I didn't have access to everything Clark had growing up as my mother couldn't afford it. I dreamed of going to basketball camps all the time, but was always unable to.

Dumb this post all you want, but this is just how I feel.

I get what you're saying. I grew up with very limited means, parents worked their asses off, usually at least 2 jobs each, but didn't make much and had 4 kids. That said, if you look at many of the WNBA and NBA players, I highly doubt they all came from well-resourced families. I think there's value in the overriding message here. JMO.

I imagine for elite talents costs gets waved or someone is supporting them if there’s a social economic problem. Generally AAU coaches will take guys under their wing. But you have to think there’s a ton of talent kids that never got the chance.

Clark has the natural talent and drive (very important) but she’s probably been working with an individual coach since the 3rd or 4th grade.

You're not wrong, and I agree with you completely (Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, etc), but I guess this just the "Old F***" in me (as my Mom likes to say, though I am 37) coming out.

But it just seems as though these last several years, these big stars like Clark had money and resources that people like you and I didn't have.

I was an absolute basketball junkie until I was 12, had dreams of being the starting SG for Iowa State for 4 years, making to the NBA, and could hit a shot from anywhere on the court ala Clark and Curry, but I was lacking very much defensively, and I really didn't have anyone to practice my defense with, so just focused on my offense.

My frustration also extends to people like that LSU Gymnast that in my mind is only big because she is pretty. I bust my ass to get two college degrees (Liberal Arts and IT), several IT certifications, and yet people like the LSU Gymnast makes more in a year than I will see in 10.

I can respect the fact she may be the most talented women's basketball player we have seen. But this isn't the first time I watched her act like a complete a$$ on the court for whatever the reason. She is a poor winner and even worse loser. IMHO... Discuss...

Quit mentioning her and giving her attention. Myself and others don’t care.

Probably? Something along those lines. I would imagine her max is probably similar to a JV player or maybe at best a varsity high school player. I could be wrong but I would be a little surprised.

And again its no knock on her. Division 1 athletes - male and female - are not "normal" people. There's nothing normal about being 6+ and 210+ and running and hitting like they do, let alone the ones who are 6'5, 320 and can move. Or in a basketball since, there is absolutely nothing "normal" about the 6'6 small forward who can run and dunk etc

She wouldn't be competing against some average 22 year old dude just off his parent's couch. That's the part people seem to forget when they say she could compete against the men's team. These guys are training and are athletes also
