So this is the best argument I have seen against Tinsley. Does the turnover stat include the first 10 games or so of the first year where he kept bouncing balls off his teammates heads because they weren't ready for the incredible passes?
That happened throughout his career. I didn't know handling included passing.
Many of his turnovers were almost full court bullets under the basket that defenders had to always be ready for.
We need to define handle here.
Does this definition from SportsLingo.com hit it pretty well?
1. This is a term used to describe a basketball player’s ball handling and dribbling skills. A player who is described as having excellent handles means they have excellent ball handling and dribbling skills.
I would add to this definition with "the ability to be closely guarded and keep the defender(s) from getting the ball from you." Tinsley loved the on-coming double team or anyone that would try to get up in his face above the key. That was just asking for an embarrassing spin move around you.
I agree he may have been a little loose with his passes at times, AND I will argue that Haliburton was a INCREDIBLE passer, but his dribbling skills were not Tinsley, level. I'm pretty sure I would put Stinson ahead of Haliburton in that regard even.
However, Haliburton as an overall floor leader and "put the ball in the right place, at the right time, to the "right guy" (when he had any) was right up there toward the top. He was Monte Morris level (maybe not A/T equal) but his floor general capabilities were up there. ALSO, he would have just as effective as Tinsley on those teams, maybe even more so. Just not by using his handle.
Haliburton was great, is having a better pro career already and didn't get all the accolades he should of becuase he didn't play on enough good teams for us. But he was a great assister, not the best dribbler. (The definition of handle.)
Second year TO number isn’t much different than his first year at ISU, 6 assists and 3.8 TO. Shot less than 40% overall and made around 40% of 2 points shots.
Those TOs were mainly passes though. Probably like over 90% of them.
None of this has anything to do with his ability to dribble.
He was probably close to the athleticism of Keshon, but had the handle of Ricky Morgan.

He toyed with less talented players. He did some razzle-dazzle and wowed fans. But he also took unnecessary risks as well. Many Globetrotters players can do some razzle-dazzle but this doesn’t mean they have better handles than Haliburton.
That's all tou think he did?
Do you think Haliburton was better with dribbling in traffic or getting to the basket?
Do think a handle includes shooting and passing? Even though it doesn't?
Tinsley was a great player but not as good as Haliburton. Tinsley was great at dribbling through traffic and getting to the basket but he often didn’t finish it or turned it over. His 2 point FG% was around 40%
Yes, he did everything but make the shot. I remember more about him turning it over 5 times.

And what do missed shots and passes have to do with handle?
Can anyone just stop and know what the hell handle is before making an argument? Haliburton could very well have been a better player, shooter, passer, defender, rebounder, bench sitter, gum chewer and shoe tier.
But, he did not have Tinsley's ability to dribble the basketball.
Haliburton is not a fancy dribbler like Tinsley was . He doesn’t dribble between defender’s legs because he doesn’t take unnecessary risks. He can’t possibly do what he is doing without superior ball handling (high assists with very low turnovers).
That's not what "handle" is. Ball security is a factor, but handle is more about a creativity and connection with the ball. A tight handle as opposed to a loose handle. If you have a tight handle, you're capable of plays with higher degrees of difficulty (fancy) while still being effective. If you have a loose handle, you can be just as effective, but you take fewer risks and your degree of difficulty is lower.
Haliburton is a great ball handler, but he has a looser handle than Tinsley.
