Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Good thoughts. The Dix move to PG backfired quickly. He wanted no part of handling the ball under pressure.

A better lineup move would be Bowen-Dix-Perkins-Sandfort-Krikke.

Iowa has a soft stretch of schedule upcoming. Will be favored in 7 of their next 8 (3 buy games). Will be interesting to see if they are able to find something during that time. There are wins available in the Big Ten. I don't think they'll crater like many of their fans seem to think.

That was painful to watch. It was like an adult vs a 6 year old.

Fran will turn 65 in May. Connor is with Pacers staff, Pat is a RS SR, Jack is a junior in HS, and Fran will surpass Dr. Tom's win total this year.
Why not hang it up, enjoy being a parent for Jack's last year of high school/see if he wants to go to a prep school before college?
That's what I would do.

Tremendous coaching job to by Connor to lead the Pacers to the championship of the in-season tournament

I don't think I've ever seen a team that puts as little pressure on the ball as Iowa that somehow manages to foul as much as Iowa does. It was like they were trying *not* to play defense until King or Jones or Lipsey or Gilbert went up strong and then just went for a cheap hack that just created and-ones.

Yeah, I expect them to have a chance at .500 in the Big 10 (doesn't take a whole lot, you just need to beat the bad teams). And they usually hit a stretch where they start beating some teams that maybe they shouldn't.

They will need 11-9 to make the tournament imo. They did nothing in the non-conference and their metrics slipped a lot this week with back to back blowouts.

From what I've seen of Iowa over the last decade+ that seems to be their tactic often with all of their 'depth'.

Slow a team down and make you beat them at the line.

Please don't give Fran any ideas like that. We want him at Iowa for several more years.

EIU's best game of the year was against Creighton, they want to play the same type of game that EIU wants to play. Get into a track meet, outlet the ball, up and down the floor. EIU can play that type of game, where they get into trouble is playing teams that want to slow it down and play half-court basketball, teams like ISU and Michigan St. Iowa has no answer for that type of game this year, before they could at least rely on one of the Murray's to drive to the hoop, they have no one on this team capable of doing that at a high rate of success. So, their lack of defense just kills them when they are not making 3's at a high clip.
I've probably gone on far enough on this so I'll just try one last explanation because this is a fair reply. I'm not asking that we become Virginia. I don't want the offense to walk the ball up court but the Creighton offense was a lot more of what I'd like. In that game we took 14 threes and played through Krikke a lot. Krikke off ball screens with Tony, krikke in the post. Last night I felt too often we'd rush down court and shoot first semi open 3 we could get. We don't have the shooters for that run and gun style imo. Last night was always going to be difficult because Iowa State made it so hard to play way I'm advocating for. They really took Krikke away and nobody else stepped up. Credit goes to Iowa State there. I don't think a lot of other teams we play will be able to stop him as efficiently. When we play that run and gun style we have to play defense longer and with this team I don't think we can outdo what we will give up

Is he really still there? Wasn’t that his smug butt on the Iowa bench last night or do they have another jerk that looks like him?

My thinking is that Fran stays one more year at Iowa and they work together on a settlement so he doesn't walk away from all that money, Jack commits to Notre Dame and Fran takes a 'special advisor' role there as Shrewsbury could definitely use the help on offense and it allows him to go full circle and stay in the game with the last son.

Hawks will win their share of big ten games, the top of that league is weaker than normal. As bad as they are, Iowa is a middle of the road big ten team.

Yeah, I doubt we ever see Fran back at Hilton. This year or next seems like his last. Both parties seem kind of done with each other which happens sometimes even with semi-successful coaches.

Credit to KCRG: they actually reported on the game.

Still classic Hok fan media vibes with having to point out the series record in the third paragraph.

Maybe they should include most of that advantage took place in the early 1900s.

If we are being honest about that overall record against Iowa in the series it has some asterisks, as honestly any series should.

I think it was Iowa 1 game up on ISU since 1980.

ISU 1 game up since 2000.

They had 17 of their wins in the series in 1920 or before with final scores of 21-13, and 15-13, for example. Any hawk fan lamenting that record is a moron, which isn’t surprising.

You may be right that Iowa doesn't have the horses to play the run n gun style, but they also don't have the roster to slow things down either, especially against a team that's got a solid defense. Their best bet to get a good look is to get up an open look early in the shot clock / in transition because they don't really have a single guy on the roster that can break down a defense off the dribble.

They play defense with their hands instead of their feet.

Which is the opposite of everything I learned about defense. In 9th grade.

Their lateral quickness is abysmal and they close out way too hard where a decent ball handler can just go right by them. That's actually where we struggled last year because Gabe, Jaren, and Grill just weren't very good ball handlers. Lipsey, Gilbert, Pav and CuJo were getting into the lane at will and since Iowa doesn't have any sort of rim protection, it was a bucket nearly every time.

Yep. They can have football. 15 in a row in the modernish era is a feat especially when they had teams that weren't good but ISU was just worse.

Doing what KCRG did with it is peak Haydenism.

Dix looked like a 7th grade Brasky going up against a 1-3-1 press. Just an absolute liability with the ball.
