Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Iowa's in trouble imo. This is their most unathletic team they've had there. Their best athlete honestly might be the guy from Belmont but he's horrible. Krikke has a great midrange but if that's taken away or if he's not hitting, he's useless out there. Dix is not a PG and I have zero clue why he was experimented there last night. Something's off with PMac right now and Perkins is either really good or bad. Sandfort is the only true P5 starter I'd say on that team right now.

Bowen had a decent night but he can't finish the basketball. Harding is not a Big 10 basketball player at this point. Freeman is going to be good and I do like him. He just happened to go up against some grown men last night.

Pat Mac looks like he's ready to be done and based off how things went for him last year with his mental health I can't blame him. Perkins looks like he wished he entered the portal.

Iowa's guards are not good enough ball handlers to break down a half court defense. They never have been under Fran so they run and gun, look for a guy who's spotting up or trailing, or when they've had a post they instantly throw it down low before the defense is set.
That's the only way they can really get some space and open looks. Play fast and messy.

Yeah I felt bad for Patrick. He's a good kid and has been through a lot. But you're right, Perkins should've hit the portal. He'd be a good #3 for a team imo.

I kind of think that limiting possessions might be good. If Fran can figure out how to effectively use Bowen in the half-court offense, there might be something there. Perkins is a nice player, but he's been a nice player for years. I keep expecting him to make a big jump and be the guy, but I just don't think he's good enough for it outside of a game here and there.

I'm not too sold on the two freshmen from IL. The post can be decent, but man he probably committed about 6 fouls in the first half going for rebounds when he had no shot that didn't get called. They were letting the game be physical, which is a bonus for ISU, but probably saved Freeman from lots of early foul trouble. He is a true Fr, but he's got a long way to go. The PG does some good things but he got overwhelmed by the defensive pressure a lot.

And I think I say this every year, but it just shocks me every year to see Iowa's basketball roster. How on earth can guys that have been in a college strength program for multiple years look like they do? The combination of skinny arms with no definition is mind-blowing.
We just don't have the shooters/scorers of past years to justify the fast pace play this year. I was shocked that Dix started instead of Bowen. Dix is too slow to play PG at this level especially against a guy like Lipsey. Bowen hasn't been great but I think he can get better and has best physical tools of the pg options.

Tony is very inconsistent. I'd rather he play to his averages more consistently than these huge variations of what you're going to get.

I think I'm a bigger fan of Freeman than you but otherwise we agree on everything. I think Freeman is less skinny limited white guy than Fran's typical post and he just needs game to slow down which will happen as he gets experience.

Fran will turn 65 in May. Connor is with Pacers staff, Pat is a RS SR, Jack is a junior in HS, and Fran will surpass Dr. Tom's win total this year.
Why not hang it up, enjoy being a parent for Jack's last year of high school/see if he wants to go to a prep school before college?
That's what I would do.

Chad's take:

The Hawkeyes have shown their youth in those games, all losses, including Thursday’s 90-65 drubbing at Iowa State.

Iowa starters last night: 2 5th-year seniors, a 4th-year senior, a junior, and last night, a sophomore.

Well if it isn't the youth of the team, why did they lose to a team they are better than?

Jack not going to Iowa seems like a sign that Fran is close to hanging it up. I don't know, the state of Iowa hoops right now is just really weird. This team reminds me a lot of the squad the year before Garza left Iowa City to work on his game. He singlehandedly saved Fran's job.

We don't defend anything regardless so that's a mute point. Limit possessions. If I feel you're the more talented team I want each team to have the ball 85 times not 110 times.
Without the defense you lose by 25 points either way. Will you feel better losing 77-52 than 90-65? Prohm had teams like that, it doesn't look good or lead to wins. You're better off getting off shots and hoping you make a better percentage than the opponent if you're Fran.

He tried getting out. Had to come back because of the optics in the family/program. I feel bad for Patrick, he's been through some real **** and life doesn't need to be like that.

You're thinking of past teams when we had the Murray's or Garza surrounded by 4 shooters that could shoot from anywhere. We have some ok shooters but elder Sandfort is the only great one. This teams much more limited. When you play fast you're increasing possessions for both teams and increasing the probability that the more talented team wins. This teams just too limited again imo to play that way. Krikke has a nice savvy old school type game where I think you can play through him in the half court. I respect your opinion though because that's kinda how fran always plays and I don't think either of us thinks he's capable coaching a different style.
EIU's best game of the year was against Creighton, they want to play the same type of game that EIU wants to play. Get into a track meet, outlet the ball, up and down the floor. EIU can play that type of game, where they get into trouble is playing teams that want to slow it down and play half-court basketball, teams like ISU and Michigan St. Iowa has no answer for that type of game this year, before they could at least rely on one of the Murray's to drive to the hoop, they have no one on this team capable of doing that at a high rate of success. So, their lack of defense just kills them when they are not making 3's at a high clip.

Good thoughts. The Dix move to PG backfired quickly. He wanted no part of handling the ball under pressure.

A better lineup move would be Bowen-Dix-Perkins-Sandfort-Krikke.

Iowa has a soft stretch of schedule upcoming. Will be favored in 7 of their next 8 (3 buy games). Will be interesting to see if they are able to find something during that time. There are wins available in the Big Ten. I don't think they'll crater like many of their fans seem to think.

Fran has 11 million reasons to stay.

Can't do it. Marge won't let Fran sit her boy.

Guy is making $3.25 million a year and the contract runs through the 27/28 season, hard to walk away from that much money on the table. He would be better off just doing what he is doing, and then if EIU fires him he gets the buyout.

Yeah, I expect them to have a chance at .500 in the Big 10 (doesn't take a whole lot, you just need to beat the bad teams). And they usually hit a stretch where they start beating some teams that maybe they shouldn't.
