*** Official Iowa vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Give Pav this upcoming off-season to work with the S&C guys and he will be really good.
I don't think Pav is every going to be a big finish through contact kind of guy. I think he's finding that floater game and being more willing to catch and shoot from 3 are going to be all he needs.

I think another secret sauce to this team that they are figuring out is that the guards have to be very active on the defensive glass. King is a bruiser and gets a body on guys, but the real rangy guys give him some problems on the glass getting tap outs. To an extent Rob as well. Those guys have been doing a great job the last couple of games clearing space then the guards come in and clean up the boards. Getting Ward back will help, but in the meantime, I think Rob, Tre and MM need to keep getting bodies on guys and then the guards help rebound on the defensive glass. Lipsey and Gilbert are very good rebounders, and even Jones and Pav have done a good job cleaning up the loose boards.

I don't know that there is a great comp for Gilbert. He's not really a PG for one, and his first step quickness and ability to blow by a defender is not like anything another ISU PG or combo guard has had in a long time.

That's one thing about the ESPN tourney that I think people need to accept is that Gilbert got out of control a lot, and it wasn't a good tournament for him overall. But he has an ability to get to the rim and either finish or get to the line that instantly makes this ISU offense the best TJ has had by a mile. We've got to ride that and let him start figuring out when to pick his spots, when to kick, when to dish, etc.

The other thing that jumped out is that even though Iowa is slow and sucks defensively, that zone press has given a lot of good teams fits. This ISU team can put a lineup out there that you just aren't going to press. A lineup of Lipsey, Gilbert and either Pavs or C. Jones is going to destroy a press and get scoring opportunities off of it, particularly Gilbert. They don't just handle the press, they make you pay for pressing. Lipsey and Gilbert are elite press-breakers, and Pavs and C. Jones are very good, particularly when they go small and they are the 3rd guard.
I think Gilbert is going to have some games like last night and some games he tries doing to much and struggles. Hopefully he can keep getting more consistent as the year goes on. I think he is the key to this team reaching it's full potential

Thanks, I'll try that out.

A favorite is whoever it is on YT that puts 'highlights' up of games that's has a bunch of bad plays mixed in there haha.

Last night's game is on there now if you want to watch a bunch of bricks and fouls.

Agree. The knock with Gilbert at UNLV was the very same.

For me, Tre King has been very consistent and doesn’t try “too” much. He’s got to have the highest shooting percentage on the team. Great presence in the paint and will get you those points. Robert Jones very similar.

100% agree. Cutting him loose is the way this team could do something huge. We have to live with the potential downside of that.

If you had an Uncle nicknamed "Big Rob" who was really tall and had a 'stache, wouldn't he be the most huggable guy in the family?
Mine was Charles Lee, no 'stache, but he was 6'4" in BOTH directions (height & circumference) and was absolutely the most huggable uncle I had. :D

His personality is what makes it. I get an irrational disliking for man buns, except with BRE. Last night in the presser it was very clear he is the leader of that team. Both Tre and Gilbert defering to him to speak. They were really enjoying the win and each other's company in the interviews. Really fun to watch.

And let's not forget one Monte Morris.
You know, I thought about him too. I think his ballhandling and lack of turnovers came from what was between his ears than the stickiness of his hands. Not to say anyone is dumb, just he didn't attempt much of what Tinsley, Stinson, or Gilbert were/are attempting. He knew when to pick his moments and exploited them. Thus far I see a lot of that in Lipsey's game, but he also adds in crazy body control, ability to hang long enough to read the d and put himself in the position to grab the rebound OR make a crazy pass back inbounds to a cutting big man when everyone else has already given up on the ball going out of bounds, etc. AND he has the body type / non-understandable hang time to lay the wood and make the shot when a secondary defender tries to come up and stop an open drive.

All of these guys are greats in their own way. BUT, the OP WAS talking handle and that is something Tinsley had a crazy game in. He had Rucker park pull down your shorts, slap you in the face and make you cry handle. AND he was able to do that in a place where doing that to some people might be kind of dangerous. IMO, he's the ISU king until proven otherwise.

The shocker for me last night was seeing the talent gap between the two teams. I seriously don't think any Hawk would get major minutes on our team. Sandfort would get about the same as Jackson. Perkins would get some minutes behind Lipsey. However, the rest of the team basically is mid major. Krikke is not a good player at all. He has decent numbers on a Valpo team that got steam rolled by everyone they played with a pulse. The freshman center has potential. The Bowen kid should have got more minutes. OTher than that. I didn't see anyone on that team that was worth anything. Big Rob and King tore up the middle. Very strange that Iowa is that far down in talent.

We watched the recording. They were both ruled intentional. #2 bearhugged BRE two different times and got called for both.
The first one was an attempt to stop other cyclones on a clear break away. I loved the Iowa inbounds play where they rolled the ball in and no Hawkeye even attempted to go after it .

Reminds me of the swing era song, Mr. Five by Five.

Mr. Five by Five
He's five feet tall and he's five feet wide
He don't measure no more from head to toe
Than he do
From side to side

Mr. Five by Five

I agree on everything you said. I think Gilbert has the highest ceiling and the most talent of anyone currently in the main rotation. It's just a question of how consistent he can be and if he can figure out the right balance to keep from forcing things but also be a go-to guy when the team is on a cold stretch (Tamin also needs to find that balance).

On the press, I'd add that having MM as the inbounder and third guy is also pretty valuable. He's comfortable enough with the ball to be able to bring it up himself if he's not getting pressured and the guards need an outlet, and a good enough passer to find the right guy if he is getting pressured and there's someone open past half-court. In a lineup with three guards + MM, it also allows one of those guards to be stationed in that spot past half-court ready to get a pass and potentially have a 2-on-1 alongside whichever big man is in, which all of the guards are capable of taking advantage of.
